The film picks up after the cliffhanger of the Hashira Training arc in the fourth season, where Tanjiro Kamado (Natsuki Hanae) and other Demon Slayers are thrust into Muzan’s terrifying, ever-shifting lair. Director Haruo Sotozaki means business right from the opening frame, hurling the viewer into high-stakes, spectacular battles.
Marquee confrontations include Shinobu Kocho (Saori Hayami) against Upper Rank Two Doma (Mamoru Miyano), Zenitsu Agatsuma (Hiro Shimono) against his former senior Kaigaku (Yoshimasa Hosoya), now the new Upper Rank Six, and Tanjiro versus Upper Rank Three Akaza (Akira Ishida). The thrill lies not just in the fevered sword fights but also in the nuances: Doma’s immunity to Shinobu’s most potent poisons, Zenitsu unveiling his self-taught Thunder Breathing, and Tanjiro’s brutal duel with Akaza deliver pure edge-of-the-seat exhilaration.
The labyrinthine Infinity Castle, combined with water, fire, and thunder imagery, makes for arresting visuals. These are heightened by Yuki Kajiura and Go Shiina’s relentlessly charged score, with tracks like A World Where the Sun Never Rises by Aimer and Shine in the Cruel Night.
Beyond the spectacle, the film offers emotional resonance through backstories: Akaza turning to crime to fund his father’s medication, his fiancée poisoned by resentful neighbours, and demons battling with tragic pasts or even a lack of remorse. These arcs add depth to both the slayers and their enemies.
While this volume has enough to captivate, it is undeniably fan service. Without familiarity with the characters and their histories, the lack of narrative cohesion becomes evident. Though the backstories provide context, newcomers will find it harder to fully appreciate the experience. Still, for first-time viewers, the film remains a thrilling ride, and for loyal fans, it’s a feast of action and emotion.
Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle is a visceral spectacle—packed with breathtaking battles, striking visuals, and poignant backstories. A little dense for outsiders, but for fans, it’s nothing short of enthralling.

When 'Demon Slayer: Mugen Train' released in 2020, it redefined what an anime film spin-off could be. Studio Ufotable took a storyline originally intended for television and transformed it into a blockbuster feature, one that balanced breakneck action with heartfelt character arcs. It became one of the highest-grossing anime films of all time, and more importantly, it set a benchmark.

With 'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle', the franchise attempts to match that promise again. Billed as the first of a trilogy that will conclude Tanjiro Kamado’s saga, the film picks up immediately after the Hashira Training Arc of Season 4. The Demon Slayer Corps, reeling from a failed attempt to kill Muzan Kibutsuji, find themselves swallowed whole into the twisted Infinity Castle, a nightmarish, ever-shifting dimension that serves as Muzan’s stronghold.
The film is not completely for newcomers. Much like 'Avengers: Infinity War', it is a culmination of years of storytelling. However, the number of flashbacks designed to keep one updated with the arc might help you enjoy the movie regardless. But without prior knowledge of Tanjiro, Nezuko, the Hashira, and the battles leading up to this moment, one might not fully realise the narrative and the stakes in this film. But for the initiated, 'Infinity Castle' feels monumental, the beginning of the endgame.
Of these, Zenitsu’s arc is the most surprising. Long derided as comic relief, his storyline here is gripping and emotionally charged, shedding the character’s 'goofy' traits and revealing real depth. Equally compelling is Akaza’s backstory. 'Demon Slayer' has always used flashbacks to humanise its demons, but Akaza’s past is the most nuanced yet, exploring both the cruelty of humanity and the tragic allure of demonhood.

If Ufotable has mastered anything, it is spectacle. The Infinity Castle is a character in itself: a surreal, shifting space of disappearing hallways and collapsing architecture, constantly disorienting both the slayers and the audience. The animation seamlessly blends 2D and 3D. Camera movements flow with precision during fights, and not a frame feels wasted.

The sound design deserves equal applause. In IMAX especially, the audio separation heightens immersion, thunderous breathing techniques ripple through the theatre, the clash of blades reverberates across channels, and character motifs swell at just the right moments. It is anime cinema at its most visceral, a sensory overload in the best way possible.

And yet, despite all this, 'Infinity Castle' falters in one key area: pacing. At 155 minutes, the runtime is stretched thin, weighed down by an over-reliance on flashbacks. These interludes, a Demon Slayer trademark, usually work well in weekly episodes where audiences have time to digest. But in a feature film, they break the adrenaline rush, undercutting tension just as battles hit their peak.
It must be remembered that 'Infinity Castle' is only part one of a trilogy. This is not a self-contained film like 'Mugen Train', but the opening chapter of a finale. Its incomplete nature is both its weakness and its strength: the film feels less like a standalone experience and more like a stitched-together arc from the anime.

'Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle' had the potential to hit perfection, had it not been for the pacing. Despite that, it is a must-watch, especially on a big screen, to fully enjoy the experience.
