Anime is an emotion for loyal fans and an experience for those who occasionally indulge in the genre. In that vein, the second instalment in the super-popular Demon Slayer TV series sits well as an offering.

Director Haruo Sotozaki’s outing launches straight into action, continuing where the previous chapter, To the Swordsmith Village, ended. Tanjiro takes on demon Hantengu (Toshio Furukawa)as he tries to kill villagers to replenish his power. The opening sequence has everything you want from an anime — incredible animation, composition, and visuals that dramatic music amplifies.

However, the energy it builds initially dips as the movie’s tone shifts, and the story moves to the training camp. While this is primarily because two independent episodes from the TV series are combined into a movie, the screenplay gets on shaky ground there on. As this is to transition the story to the finale, the film becomes nothing more than just a bridge between the two volumes, giving it a loose structure.

That said, even when the pace and energy dip, the film stays stunning and cinematic, and serves some laughs through the characters’ interactions. Among the most outstanding aspects is the emotional bond between Tanjiro and his sister, Nezuko (Akari Kitô).

From the demon annihilation, where you see the entire Demon Slayer team in action, to the demon lord Muzan's backstory, and fan-favourite characters like Serpent Hashira, Obanai Iguro (Kenichi Suzumura), and Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa (Tomokazu Seki), there's enough excitement on display.

Unlike some other anime outings that are instalments but still work as independent viewing or introduction to their respective franchise, this one clearly serves the purpose of segueing to the grand finale and pleasing the fans. Still, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba – To the Hashira Training is an immersive experience that deserves to be had on the big screen with booming sound. The intense action and stunning animation will leave you impressed.
