Aditya Dhar's story, inspired by true events, is fascinating. Aditya Dhar's screenplay (additional screenplay by Shivkumar V Panicker and Ojas Gautam) is captivating and unlike the other spy or Pakistan-based films. However, the writing gets stretched. Aditya Dhar's dialogues are dramatic. But a film like this ought to have more massy one-liners.

Aditya Dhar's direction is exemplary. Just like URI: THE SURGICAL STRIKE [2019], DHURANDHAR is divided into chapters. The text that appears on screen, whether its names of characters and episodes or even certain crucial dialogues, make for a unique watch. At a crucial juncture, the screen turns red and real-life conversations between terrorists and their handlers are played. Again, this is a one-of-a-kind thing that helps the film stand out. Of course, there’s no denying that the film has enough gripping and cinematic moments as well. The manner in which a man from India manages to infiltrate deep into Pakistan’s political system is quite entertaining and even intriguing. Moreover, his rise seems organic and is not unconvincing at all. The attack on Rehman’s son in the marriage is memorable and so is the scene where the whole gang of Babu is finished. The intermission arrives at a nail-biting juncture. Post-interval, the way Hamza goes to insane lengths to save his boss makes for a great watch. The finale fight is also worth a watch.

On the flipside, the film majorly suffers on account of its very long length. DHURANDHAR has a run time of 214 minutes and moreover, the interval point comes after 2 hours. One can argue that even ANIMAL [2023] or PUSHPA 2 [2024] were lengthy. But those were conventional mass entertainers. DHURANDHAR, meanwhile, is a mass cinema of a different kind. In some places, the narrative seems a bit dry and stretched. Hence, there are moments where the audience, especially the masses, would lose interest. Also, it’s a two-part saga and a section of the audience might have reservations over the fact that despite such a lengthy run time, the story is far from over. The other issue with the film is the romantic track. The manner in which the girl of a politician runs away while the politician looks the other way is hard to digest.
Ranveer Singh delivers one of the most accomplished performances of his career. He gets into the skin of the character and the way he has performed is seen to be believed. Especially the scene where he’s vulnerable is quite praiseworthy. Akshaye Khanna communicates a lot just through his eyes and expressions. The actor’s sheer presence adds a lot to the film and his performance elevates the impact in many scenes. Sanjay Dutt is credited with a special appearance and does well. Arjun Rampal, too, has limited screen time and oozes terror and how. R Madhavan is terrific and leaves a huge mark. Sara Arjun is let down by the writing but makes a smashing debut. Her screen presence is electrifying. Rakesh Bedi lends able support. Shashwat Sachdev's music Gaurav Gera, Naveen Kaushik (Donga) and Danish Pandor (Uzair) are memorable. Akash Khurana, Saumya Tandon (Rehman's wife), Manav Gohil (Sushant Bansal), Bimal Oberoi (Bimal Oberoi) and the actors playing the Khanani brothers do very well.
Music is decent. The title track has already become a rage. 'Ishq Jalakar – Karvaan' is the best of the lot in terms of placement. 'Gehra Hua' is decent. 'Run Down The City – Monica' is well picturized. 'Shararat' and 'Ez Ez' are passable. Shashwat Sachdev's background score adds to the madness.

Vikash Nowlakha's cinematography is spectacular. Saini S Johray's production design is realistic while Smriti Chauhan's costumes are authentic. Aejaz Gulab, Sea Young Oh, Yannick Ben and Ramazan Bulut's action is very disturbing. Envision VFX, Philm CGI, and Resonance Digital's VFX is satisfactory. Shivkumar V Panicker's editing should have been much better. The film should have had a run time of under 3 hours for a better impact.
On the whole, DHURANDHAR is a well-made, ambitious big-screen experience with top-notch craft, memorable moments and some truly outstanding performances, led by a career-best turn from Ranveer Singh and a superbly controlled, scene-lifting act by Akshaye Khanna. However, the excessive run time, dry stretches and the decision to tell this as a two-part saga will restrict its appeal for a section of the audience, especially those expecting a more racy, massy thriller. Ultimately, while the film has all the ingredients to win over viewers who have the patience for its length, its box office performance will heavily depend on word of mouth and how much the audience is willing to embrace such a long, tonally intense espionage drama.

A fictional narrative inspired by true incidents, Aditya Dhar’s action drama follows Hamza (Ranveer Singh), a mysterious Indian agent who embeds himself deep within Karachi’s mafia network (Lyari gangwar) to dismantle terror operations from the inside. Structured across multiple chapters, the world-building is deliberate and immersive, pulling you into a gritty, violent universe that unfolds over nearly 3.5 hours. Yet, the runtime rarely feels overbearing thanks to Dhar’s stylish, tight storytelling.
The music and background score — weaving 70s and 80s Bappi Lahiri classics into modern soundscapes — are a triumph. They elevate the narrative and maintain the film’s relentless pulse.
Though marketed as a spy thriller echoing the classic RAW vs ISI conflict, at its core, Dhurandhar is more of a Godfather-esque saga set in Karachi’s underbelly — a world clearly designed to expand into a trilogy.
Despite being set in the past, some production design choices feel a little too contemporary and occasionally generic. The film also dips into stereotypical moments, like a terrorist smirking, “Hindus are darpok,” reminding you of Bollywood’s tendency to lean on familiar tropes.
Ranveer Singh returns to claim his number one spot in a layered, restrained avatar that plays to his strengths. His look — long locks, a grungy beard, and a piercing stare — may evoke comparisons to Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal, but the performance and tone are entirely different. Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, Arjun Rampal, Rakesh Bedi and Danish Pandor deliver solid supporting turns that enrich the narrative. Sara Arjun is likeable in her part.
An extension of Uri’s ‘Yeh naya India hai, yeh ghar mein ghusega bhi aur maarega bhi’ sentiment, despite its length and unflinching violence, Dhurandhar grips you from start to finish and never lets go.

There's a particular flavour to Aditya Dhar's filmmaking. It's never exactly shocking, but it's never not stunning either. Dhar loves a war cry, prioritises India above all else, and positions Pakistan as the ever-persistent enemy. Dhurandhar wastes no time laying out its worldview. The mission is crystal clear: infiltrate Pakistan's core - the very machinery that fuels global terrorism - and stay perpetually two steps ahead.
The film's first half is divided into eight chapters, making the narrative easy to follow even as it jumps between real, traumatic events. From the IC-814 Kandahar hijack to the Parliament attack to the horror of Mumbai's 26/11, Dhar strings these tragedies together to argue that India had no choice but to rethink its entire playbook. Enter Operation Dhurandhar -- a covert strategy built on precision, brutality, and an unfiltered rage that demands retribution.

Dhar's recreation of Karachi's Lyari town is especially striking. His world feels textured, and dangerously believable. Dhurandhar forces cerebral investment; Google searches become inevitable. If his Uri: The Surgical Strike (2019) shouted its patriotism from the rooftops, this one seems more calculative.
Front and centre is Ranveer Singh as Hamza Ali Mazhari, but the true scene-stealer is Akshaye Khanna. As Rehman Baloch aka Dakait, Khanna gives a masterclass in simmering intensity. His silences speak, his breakdowns sting, and his presence elevates every frame he occupies. It's one of his most commanding performances in years.
Sanjay Dutt brings weight as Chaudhary Aslam, Arjun Rampal adds steel as the ISI chief, and Rakesh Bedi is pitch-perfect as Jamaal, the crafty politician who breezes in with humour. Ranveer's Hamza remains the story's anchor - a character almost like ash and dust, tiny but capable of blinding or burning you. Singh plays him with conviction, though the abundance of close-ups inevitably offers echoes of his acclaimed Khilji.

Where Dhar takes the biggest swing is in his portrayal of Pakistan. It is not caricatured, but surprisingly nuanced, especially politically. But he doesn't mince words: Pakistan is framed as the nurturer-in-chief of terrorism. The film even delves into the Pakistan vs Balochistan conflict, offering a rare mainstream peek into internal fractures and infiltration routes.

The covert operations themselves are glorified, painted as proof that India is constantly ahead -- vigilant, calculating, and fiercely aware of every move made across the border. At the same time, Dhar amplifies the idea that a wounded India is far more dangerous. "Ghayal hoon isliye ghatak hoon," Ranveer's Hamza declares - that neatly sums up the film's moral position.

Among the standout moments is the film's use of real-life 26/11 footage, particularly how live Indian news broadcasts inadvertently aided terrorists and their handlers monitoring the attacks in real time. It's an uncomfortable reminder of how the choreography was being designed in plain sight.
Ranveer's chemistry with Sara Arjun works well too. She appears younger, but the age gap is justified within the story, and their dynamic adds occasional softness to an otherwise relentless narrative.

And then comes the climax, neither rushed nor satisfying. It simply exists, an ending designed to hold space for Part 2. There's no cliffhanger, but ample hints of what lies ahead. The problem? At three hours and thirty-four minutes, the film tests your patience. With tighter editing, this could have been a lean 2.5-hour knockout. Too many shots linger unnecessarily, especially on bloodied corpses and bullet-torn bodies. Violence should haunt the mind, not numb it.
The background score is superb - Karvaan resonates - and the use of classics like Hawa Hawa adds unexpected texture. The film is ambitious, engaging, occasionally exhausting, but always watchable. Not every choice lands, but the world Dhar builds is gripping enough to keep you invested.
Dhurandhar is a sprawling, muscular, politically sharp thriller that bites off a lot, and thanks to Khanna's explosive brilliance, chews most of it successfully.

"Ghayal hoon isliye ghatak hoon." While this one-liner looks like an ode to Sunny Deol's '90s action films, it also sums up Ranveer Singh's feelings of waiting his turn for far too long. Just like its runtime of 3 hours 32 minutes, it took a long time for Dhurandhar to arrive in theatres.

Without an iota of doubt, Ranveer Singh is back with a bang, proving that he can become anyone, anything -- and Dhurandhar is proof. He is feral, shrewd, and a mean killing machine who somehow also has a beating heart in Aditya Dhar's indulgent movie that meanders between being a high-octane cross-border spy thriller and gangster saga.

The plot had already 'leaked' days before the release, so yes, while Dhurandhar is set against the backdrop of the 1999 IC-814 Kandahar hijack and the 2001 Parliament attack, the first part of the film packs a lot more.

Continuing the broad-stroked sentiment of revenge from Uri: The Surgical Strike, Aditya Dhar takes the tagline of his 2019 debut much farther when Ranveer Singh's character in the Dhurandhar end credits says, "Ye naya Bharat hai, ye ghar mein ghusega bhi aur maarega bhi."
The events in Dhurandhar kickstart from December 30, 1999, a day before hostages of the Kandahar hijack were set to be freed after India agrees to release three Pakistani terrorists -- Masood Azhar, Omar Sheikh, and Mushtaq Ahmad Zargar. We meet Ajay Sanyal of the Intelligence Bureau, played by a dependable R Madhavan, who is dead against letting the terrorists go but fails before the bureaucracy.

After more damage is done, the minister of external affairs -- who looks a lot like Jaswant Singh but is named Devavrat Kapoor -- finally relents and allows Ajay Sanyal to get his way. The two drink to the beginning of what is a secret programme codenamed 'Dhurandhar'.

Under this project, we see this "weapon", a man with no family or purpose, land in Lyari, the notorious gangland of Karachi in Pakistan. The name of this weapon is Humza Ali Mazari, later revealed to be Jaskirat Singh Rangli, played by Ranveer Singh.

Why Lyari, you ask? We are told that whoever sits on Lyari's throne gets to Karachi and thereby rules Pakistan.

Dhurandhar details how Pakistan's gangs, politicians, and intelligence agency ISI operate as a nexus, combining their power to unleash terror against India. The film also touches upon the friction between resident Pakistanis and Balochs living in Pakistan.

The only cast member who almost steals Ranveer Singh's thunder is the phenomenal Akshaye Khanna. As the respected and feared Lyari gangster, based on the real-life Rehman 'Dakait' Baloch, who wants legitimacy as a political leader, Akshaye Khanna is thoroughly watchable in all shades of emotions.

Sanjay Dutt's SP Chaudhry Aslam -- also based on the real-life Pakistani supercop of the same name-- is menacing. His character, benched as SP for seven years, only comes back to clean up Lyari on the request of conniving Pakistani politician Jameel Jamaali, when he is promised a Lyari Task Force that will work on “mah rules, and with mah boys”.

Arjun Rampal's Major Iqbal of ISI doesn't appear much in the film, but that doesn't stop the actor from making an impression. The infamous torture scene with an Indian asset, whose body is punctured with fishhooks which we saw at the beginning of the Dhurandhar trailer, is even more chilling in the film.

Before Major Iqbal's cruelty hits crescendo, he calmly rolls up his sleeves, chooses an apron from the wall, and wears gloves, ensuring his clothes don't get bloody. And this is not the only time, the viewer will witness brutality, gore, and graphic violence (You've been warned.)

That's the first time we see Humza on the verge of blowing his cover, looking like a deer caught in the headlights, a scene that is a testament to what a fine performer Ranveer Singh is.

Debutante Sara Arjun does her best as Yalina, the rebellious young daughter of Jameel Jamaali (a terrific Rakesh Bedi). To one's surprise, the age gap between the two leads is addressed head-on during a strategic conversation where Yalina's father shames Humza for approaching a 19-year-old when he must be at least 32 himself.

Special shout-out to Gaurav Gera (Nandu from Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin), who is unrecognisable in the film. Let us know if you spot him.

Aditya Dhar once again entrusts the film's background score to his Uri collaborator Shashwat Sachdev, who doesn't disappoint. Shashwat Sachdev cleverly uses classic Pakistani songs like Hasan Jahangir's Hawa Hawa, and ghazals like Ghulam Ali's Chupke Chupke, and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan's Afreen Afreen, along with Indian bangers like Piya Tu Ab To Aaja and Rambha Ho! as the story flows. The film's jukebox has gems such as the title track, the reimagined Karvan qawwali, and Ez-Ez that should be checked out.

What may put you off is the episode-wise breakdown of the film and the second half, which feels like a completely different film altogether. Archival footage also makes on-and-off appearances, featuring real faces and names. A long disclaimer at the beginning states the film is a mix of real and fictional, including names such as Arshad Pappu, Benazir Bhutto, and Aaqib Ali Zarwari. Take your pick. 

Some viewers may be disappointed because several visuals in the Dhurandhar trailer belong to part two, which will release in cinemas on March 19, 2026.

Dhurandhar doesn't end with a "Kattappa ne Baahubali ko kyun maara?"-like, but audiences will be back in theatres come March to see where the film goes before it concludes. Hopefully, part two does justice to Ranveer Singh the actor.

So, let's tell you how the longest film of Ranveer Singh's career fares.
The year 2025 has proven to be a good one for the entertainment world. Films like "Chava," "Saiyaar," and "Kantara: Chapter 1" have significantly benefited the Indian box office, and now, at the end of the year, a Bollywood film has been released that could break all records. We're talking about "Dhurandhar," in which Aditya Dhar brings together five Bollywood heavyweights: Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, and Arjun Rampal. This film, produced by Jio Studios and B62 Studios, released in theaters today, December 5, 2025. In my opinion, it could prove to be the biggest film of 2025.
First of all let me tell you that this film is a fictional film based on true events, which is specifically inspired by 'Operation Lyari', whichPakistanThe film is based on the local gangs and crime syndicates in the Lyari area of ​​Karachi. Set against the backdrop of the IC-814 hijacking in 1999, the attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001, and the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, the film centers on India's IB chief Ajay Sanyal, played by R. Madhavan, who plans a major mission to infiltrate and dismantle a powerful terrorist network operating from Pakistan. To carry out this risky operation, Sanyal recruits a RAW agent, played by Ranveer Singh, known in Pakistan as Hamza Ali Mazari.
The film's story is powerful. Despite being 214 minutes long, it won't bore you at any point. This is Ranveer Singh's first feature film of such a length, and no amount of praise for his role would be enough. The film's biggest hit is Ranveer Singh's character, a man of pain, forged by brokenness, and the courage to plunge into danger for his country. From an angry young man to an undercover weapon capable of infiltrating the enemy's heart, Ranveer portrays the film with such intensity that the audience forgets to look away. In the second half, every scene of his feels like lightning striking the screen; his performance draws applause, whistles, and silence from the theater.
Meanwhile, the film's underworld segment is as dangerous as it is realistic. Akshaye Khanna's Rehman Dacoit, a calm but venomous mind, teaches acting lessons with fear etched in his eyes. Sanjay Dutt's "Jinn" avatar as SP Chaudhary Aslam and Arjun Rampal's portrayal of Major Iqbal will win hearts, and Sara Arjun's innocent strength is commendable. Together, these characters create an atmosphere that draws the viewer in. They say some films aren't just seen, they're felt, and Dhurandhar is one of those. This film delves into the history of Indian intelligence, the truth of terrorism, and the world of those unsung warriors whose fight is neither noisy nor recognized—only duty. From the outset, it's clear that Dhurandhar isn't a typical thriller; it's a film born from a sense of mission, immersing the viewer in a behind-the-scenes battle where every breath, every step, and every decision is no longer more important than the nation.
Director Aditya Dhar delivers his most mature, boldest, and most poignant film yet. He masters pacing, technique, and emotion with equal dexterity. Even the 196-minute running time never becomes a burden—every scene serves a purpose, every twist deepens the story. The twist at interval sends a chill through your spine, while the second half becomes a battleground of strategy, deceit, politics, and fraud that leaves the viewer with no time to blink. The film's background score elevates the entire experience. Here, BMG isn't just music, it's a war cry—every explosion, every revelation, and every risk collides with the music so intensely that the very air in the cinema hall vibrates. It can easily be considered one of the best background scores of the decade.
The violence is limited, but the film's emotional impact is immense. This story isn't just about the agents' battles, but also about their sacrifices, their fears, and their dedication to their country. The producers (Aditya Dhar, Lokesh Dhar, and Jyoti Deshpande) have created a vast, authentic, and technically impressive universe that sets a new direction for Indian cinema. Grand sets, raw action, bold writing, and a powerful cast—their conviction is evident in every frame. Overall, Dhurandhar isn't just a film; it's a salute to India's hidden warriors, a sensitive mirror, and a cinematic experience that demands to be seen not once, but twice. The story of 'Dhurandhar' isn't over yet; its second part will be released in March 2026. My 4 out of 5 stars for this film.

#AkshayeKhanna is outstanding – calm, calculated, and explosive... Every frame he appears in carries weight; every dialogue pierces through... If his act in #Chhaava was brilliant, he's beyond terrific here.

#SanjayDutt is superb and authoritative... #RMadhavan is fantastic, bringing both style and substance... #ArjunRampal is smashing, owning his space in the narrative.

#SaraArjun is confident, holds her own in a male-dominated setting... Special mention for #RakeshBedi – this is a memorable performance by the veteran.

Hiccups? Not really... The excessive runtime might make some uncomfortable, but there's enough meat in the narrative for you to forget about the length soon enough.

Also, the extreme violence won't be everyone's cup of tea – especially the sequence involving #ArjunRampal after the interval – but it must be said that the action blocks are brilliantly executed.

The soundtrack cleverly weaves vintage Bollywood tracks into the narrative... The production design is top-notch... The cinematography is absolutely stunning, creating a gritty, authentic world.

⭐️ Final word? A big-screen experience that thrives on solid direction, commanding performances, and spectacular action... Don’t miss it!

The film truly comes alive in its second half, which is intense, fast-paced, and full of surprises. Aditya Dhar handles the story with great care, every scene is thought through, and the world-building is rich and believable. The screenplay is very tight. There’s so much happening that if you blink, you might miss something important. Still, nothing feels forced; the story grows naturally, and the character arcs are extremely strong.

One of the best parts is the music and background score, unique, powerful, and perfectly matched to the film’s mood. The background music supports the action without ever overshadowing it.
The film also brings back the flavour of classic 70s and 80s action cinema – high-stakes moments, dramatic showdowns, and scenes where the audience can’t help but think, “Aur maaro!” The detailing is fantastic too. From the culture to the politics to the functioning of the underworld, the research shines through in every frame.
Ranveer Singh delivers one of his most powerful performances, intense, emotional, and completely controlled. It may even top his work as Alauddin Khilji.

Akshaye Khanna is chilling as Rehman Dakait. He owns the screen every time he appears and makes the character unforgettable.

R. Madhavan brings quiet strength to his role as the IB Chief. He’s sharp, confident, and compelling.
Despite Arjun Rampal's limited screen time, it leaves an impact and makes you dislike his character, just as intended.

Sanjay Dutt as SP Chaudhary Aslam, Sanjay Dutt steps in to crack down on Karachi’s underworld. He’s strong and steady in his performance.

Rakesh Bedi provides much-needed relief from the film’s heavy tone, and his character plays an important role throughout.

Sara Arjun is wonderful as the female lead. Despite initial discussions around the age gap between her and Ranveer, their chemistry works beautifully on screen. Their romantic scenes are gentle, warm, and surprisingly moving.

Dhurandhar is a gripping, emotional, and thoroughly engaging spy thriller. With powerful performances from Ranveer Singh and Akshaye Khanna, strong direction by Aditya Dhar, and a story filled with action, love, patriotism, and memorable villains, the film is made for the big screen.

And just when you think the story is done, the makers reveal the sequel, titled Revenge, releasing on March 19, 2026.

This is indeed Ranveer Singh’s one of the best performances of the year. And it indeed worth the wait for all of us. Looks like he is choosing his movies with care. After his brilliant performance in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, ‘Dhurandhar’ is a completely a different film with loads of action, giggles of the gun and if you love the smell of blood, you truly cannot miss it.
The film is divided into 8 chapters and opens with a terrorist attack scene.  ‘ Dhurandhar’ is a name of a mission and it did take inspiration from covert operations led by RAW, Parliament attack, Operation Lyari, 26/11 terrorist attack and more. And NO, the film is not based on Major Mohit Sharma.


The three hours, thirty-four minutes movie can be a bit of an over-stretch, but it is worth all your time. It is indeed one of the biggest and boldest release of 2025. It is a pulse-pounding look into the high-stakes world of covert operatives, where every decision is a matter of life and death, and the battle for the nation is fought in the shadows.
The movie is not based on the armed forces, but about men who actually risk their lives and fight invisible wars. It is about men who have sacrificed everything to serve their country and most importantly we need to realise that these are the men who have even probably forgotten real names.


‘Dhurandhar’ is a tribute to all such men and those forgotten voices who risk their all for the nation! The way Dhurandhar’ ends, makes you want the second part and I am sure Aditya Dhar is soon  going to come up with it.
