Shay Hatten's story is cliched. But Shay Hatten's screenplay is better and keeps viewers engrossed. Shay Hatten's dialogues are conversational. Sadly, there are no subtitles available which will make it difficult for a section of the viewers to understand certain dialogues.

Len Wiseman's direction is pacy. He brings a certain freshness to the series of JOHN WICK as his execution style is different from that of Chad Stahelski. The training sequence stands out and the fact that it’s a female character adds a nice touch. Len reserves the best for the second half. The manner in which the town of Hallstatt is depicted and the way its residents are portrayed are very novel.

On the flipside, things get repetitive. Though the direction style is different, the pattern is still the same. Hence, one knows what to expect, more or less. The characters of Daniel Pine (Norman Reedus) and Lena (Catalina Sandino Moreno) are not properly fleshed out. Lastly, the first half is just alright. A scene starts all of a sudden, depicting that Eve has killed tons of men in a washroom. Though it makes for a unique watch, it is also abrupt.
Ana de Armas adds a lot to the lead character with her bravura performance and star power. This is no easy role by any stretch and yet, she pulls it off effortlessly. Keanu Reeves (John Wick) is to this film what Salman Khan is to PATHAAN or Ajay Devgn is to SIMMBA. He is superb in a supporting role and his scenes will be greeted with whistles and hoots. Gabriel Byrne is subtle and very effective as the villain. Ian McShane, Anjelica Huston, the late Lance Reddick (Charon), Abraham Popoola (Frank; arms dealer) and Juliet Doherty (Tatiana) lend able support. Norman Reedus and Catalina Sandino Moreno do well but are let down by writing. Waris Ahluwalia (The Eye, who oversees the town) leaves a huge mark due to his character and Indian connection. David Castañeda, Victoria Comte, Choi Soo-young (Katla Park), Jung Doo-hong (Il Seong) and Ava McCarthy (Ella Pine) do well in small roles.
On the whole, FROM THE WORLD OF JOHN WICK: BALLERINA organically takes forward the much-loved franchise and works due to the gripping second half, action and the performances of Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves.

Hollywood has generated a spade of female-led badass babe-action thrillers. Angelina Jolie in Salt and Wanted, Scarlett Johansson starrer Black Widow, Jennifer Lawrence in Red Sparrow, Linda Hamilton in Terminator, the examples are plenty. What sets Ballerina apart, beyond its terrific action choreography, is its casting. Ana de Armas’ Eve is fierce yet feminine. She’s hardened by life but not bereft of emotion. The softness of her past isn’t eroded by the brutalities of her present. She kills like an assassin but empathises like a woman--she fights like a girl. Director Len Wiseman creates a distinct lead that doesn’t aspire to be a John Wick and Ana de Armas’ casting is a cherry on top. The actress blends pulsating action and vulnerability flawlessly. She is one woman army who only trusts her instincts.
A spin-off stemming from a formulaic origin story, the real dance in Ballerina is the spectacular action set pieces that play out at a lightning speed. Whether it’s a deadly hand-to-hand combat or guns, knives, sword, flame-throwers, fire extinguishers or virtually any weapon within an arm’s reach, the film has it covered. There’s a little humour too, but the film stays rooted in its no nonsense-action origin. Two action scenes in particular are outstanding and amp up the drama.
For fans of Keanu Reeves and the franchise, of course he’s there but he lets the girl fight her own battles without stealing her thunder. Eve isn’t spared because she’s a girl. She is kicked around, beaten black and blue but never defeated. She rises like a ballerina with an unflinching resolve while pinning her nemesis beneath her toe. She isn’t robotic and yet lethal in her flight of fire. Eve stands tall in the world she creates, beyond the John Wick universe.

Set around the third installment of the John Wick film series, Ballerina is the story of another assassin from that world who defies the rules and faces consequences. With action set pieces that are increasingly bloody and creative, a well-etched character arc, and a similar philosophical core to its parent series, Ballerina turns out to be an effective companion piece to the John Wick films. However, if you are someone who finds yourself in the theatre unaware of the franchise’s legacy, Ballerina might come across as an excuse for a series of incredibly sophisticated fight sequences stitched together by a semblance of a story.

As an origin story, Ballerina takes a familiar route: an orphaned child, robbed of her innocence, with a burning vengeance deep in her heart, that doesn’t let her choose a path that would save her from getting her hands bloody. Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), as a child, witnesses her father die at the hands of a cult while saving her from their grasp. She grows up with her father’s family, which turns out to be the Ruska Roma, the same criminal organisation that John Wick belongs to. Under the mentorship of its Director (Anjelica Huston), Eve is taught to become an assassin and, more importantly, to “fight like a girl." However, that’s the extent to which the film explores gender politics, as there isn’t a lot of depth to Eve, and she does almost everything John would have done in her place.
As Eve grows up to become an able assassin, during one of her contracts, she comes across a man from the cult that killed her father, forcing her to pursue the path of revenge. The Director attempts to stop her, citing an ancient pact between Ruska Roma and the cult, but Eve bites into the forbidden fruit and is cast out from the garden. That’s when the series of action set pieces begin, but you don’t mind, as they get better with every passing minute. The seam that joins one action sequence to another is not as invisible as one would want it to be. The mechanics become evident. Even the subplot of Eve’s sister doesn’t do much.

What works is the parallel the film draws between Eve and John. While John’s presence in the film feels a bit forced—as he doesn’t affect the eventual outcome of the plot–it adds weight in a different quarter. The idea of choice, a recurring philosophical motif of the John Wick films, is dealt with here too. John Wick is the story of a former monster’s return to his old ways. This one is about the origin of one. John knows choices have consequences, but Eve Macarro learns it. Yet both make the same choice, leaving you with another philosophical question: “Do choices make a person, or are you who you are?" On their first meeting, Eve asks him if it is possible to walk out of the door. John says, “She still has a choice." While such meanderings are not what makes one go to John Wick films, they make them stand out from the rest of the garden-variety revenge sagas.

A Canadian actor, filmmaker and musician, Keanu Reeves has won several awards and accolades for his work throughout his career. He is best known for his performances in films like The Matrix series, Constantine, Speed, Dangerous Liaisons, Point Break, Bram Stoker's Dracula and the John Wick series. Known for playing stoic reserved characters, Reeves has also been associated with theater. He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the year 2005.

An Irish actor, director and producer, Gabriel Byrne rose to prominence with the final season of the Irish television show The Riordans and its spin-off. He began his acting career at Focus Theater and went on to the join the Royal Court Theater. Some of his his most well known films include Vampire Academy, Spider, The 33, The Usual Suspects, Stigmata and End of Days. He has won several prestigious awards and nominations throughout his career including the Golden Globe and the Theater World Awards.
