Ryan Crego’s live-action animated musical fantasy comedy, based on the popular series Gabby’s Dollhouse, is purely a kiddie fest. Expect an avalanche of colours, glitter, and music. Gabby sings the catchy ‘Pinch Pinch Song’ and squeezes her giant panda plush toy Pandy Paws (Logan Bailey) to magically shrink into a miniature doll to enter the dollhouse. Her other companions include Cakey (Juliet Donemfeld as the cupcake Gabby cat), MerCat (the mermaid cat voiced by Secunda Wood), and CatRat (Donovan Patton), among many others.
The story remains simple and easy to follow, perfect for its young audience. The colourful, shiny world and playful characters make this a charming outing. The narrative moves smoothly between live action and animation, which is handled well. For adults, it might feel a tad too sugary and over-the-top, but little ones will enjoy it as Gabby breaks the fourth wall and makes the film interactive. Beyond the fantasy adventure, the story gently reminds viewers to stay playful and keep the child within alive. This message comes through Vera, a business tycoon who sees toys only as collectibles. She has abandoned her once best friend and soft toy Chumsley (Jason Mantzoukas) and dislikes kids. Her track is the one that grown-ups might enjoy, especially thanks to her diva of a pet cat, Marlena, who dresses exactly like her. The Yoga face-off sequence between the two will have not just kids but also adults in splits.
The performances are spot-on. Gloria Estefan is warm and endearing as Gigi, while Laila Lockhart Kraner embodies Gabby perfectly, particularly in the scenes where she realises she may one day outgrow her dollhouse world. Kristen Wiig is a riot as the haughty Vera, balancing comedy with flair. Jason Mantzoukas shines as Chumsley, voicing the plush toy who refuses to be forgotten.
The film feels overly sweet and overstuffed with cat puns (“ameowzing,” “walk meow”), colours, and sparkle, Still, with its upbeat songs, dazzling visuals, and lovable characters, Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie is pure delight for its target audience — the kids.

She is best known for her work in the series Saturday Night Live and her performances in films like The Martian, Ghostbusters and Bridesmaids. She studied art at the University of Arizona before turning to acting and is an alumna of the Groundlings Theatre in Los Angeles.
