It is a clever, biting reflection of how Mahatma Gandhi’s face, once a symbol of values, now represents power, privilege, and survival. Yet, as the film progresses, the deeper Gandhian philosophy quietly emerges. If society needs to change, that change must begin from within. Beliefs matter, integrity matters, and that is where the film ultimately lands.


On the other end of the spectrum is Vijay Sethupathi’s character Mahadev, a man who has nothing. The word 'broke' feels insufficient to describe his reality. He cannot feed his frailing mother, steals electricity from neighbours to survive, and cannot even afford a cup of tea for the woman he loves. His lover (Aditi) wants to marry him, but love alone cannot fill empty stomachs. As he goes on a hunt for jobs, he repeatedly encounters corruption. A realisation dawns -- Gandhi talks, money talks. And morality often gets drowned out in the process.

When these two lives intersect, the film beautifully explores how vastly different worlds can still be governed by the same currency. And in that intersection lies the film’s sharpest truth: even the best intentions can buckle under the weight of desperation. When money enters the room, morals do not always walk out, but they do get tested.

There are moments of quiet brilliance throughout. One standout scene shows Vijay Sethupathi and Aditi Rao Hydari romancing from their respective balconies, culminating in a forehead kiss delivered from a distance. It is tender, imaginative, and heart-melting. Another memorable sequence is the robbery at Arvind’s house, where a novice Mahadev stumbles upon objects that hold little real value, while a seasoned professional effortlessly walks away with true luxury. It is a subtle commentary on experience, greed, and illusion.
The background score is exceptional, knowing exactly when to rise and when to retreat. The use of old songs alongside original compositions adds emotional texture without overwhelming the narrative. Vijay Sethupathi is the star of the film, emoting every little emotion with so much honesty. He also surprises with a delightful dance sequence. Arvind Swami is brilliant as always, and makes your heart ache at how little we see this actor on-screen.

Aditi Rao Hydari is luminous, her eyes and expressions doing all the talking. She stands in contrast with Mahadev, and once again, her performance is a reminder of how powerful restraint can be. Mahesh Manjrekar and Usha Nadkarni add their experience, while Siddharth Jadhav ends up making you giggle with his brilliant comic timing.


In an age of endless reels, loud airports, and phones constantly screaming for attention, Gandhi Talks feels almost radical. It is soothing to the ears, calming to the mind, and deeply affecting to the heart. Hats off to the filmmakers for even daring to imagine a film like this. Yes, it is niche and may cater to a specific audience, but films like these deserve to be made, celebrated, and protected. They give hope to young writers and filmmakers that originality still has a place.
And if someone like this writer, who enjoys music at full volume, can find themselves moved, then truly, anyone can. And that, perhaps, is Gandhi Talks’ greatest achievement.



Indian cinema has come a long way, spanning 100 years, from silent cinema to the present. Initially, silent films were a technical necessity, as the technology for talking films arrived later. But in today's era, where loud music, grand cinema, and commercial films dominate, and a film's marketability is considered before its story, the creation of a silent film demonstrates the courage and dedication of directors and producers to cinema.

Director Kishore Pandurang is both emotional and happy to see the film finally come to life after 15 years. He also praises A.R. Rahman, Vijay Sethupathi, and Aditi Rao Hydari for believing in the project and agreeing to helm it.

The struggle of Vijay Sethupathi's character becomes clear right from the beginning, but after a point, this struggle starts to feel repetitive and the story stagnates at some places.

After the intermission, a scene related to the house gets prolonged.

Some characters are not completely clear, like the journalist – the audience is left guessing who he is and what his role is.

The director-writer has crafted a clever script, making it difficult to question why a character isn't speaking in many instances. There are many situations where silence seems natural, such as a sick mother sleeping or someone breaking into the house. However, in some instances, it seems as if a character is still gesturing even in noisy situations, or scenes are cut to suit a convenience, such as the court scene where the judge turns the microphone to speak, and the scene ends right there, or Mahadev goes to the market to buy weapons.

Features

Kishore's direction beautifully captures life in a Mumbai slum without dialogue—sometimes through songs playing on the radio, sometimes through the people sitting there, and sometimes through everyday routines. A long shot without cuts in the opening scene draws the viewer into the film's world. The cinematographer and actors also deserve praise, as such shots are not easy to achieve.

This film communicates as much through symbols and signs as it does through acting and gestures.

Vijay Sethupathi is a powerful actor, having proven this in numerous films. This film was challenging for him, but he brought the character to life beautifully. Arvind Swami and Aditi Rao Hydari also deliver excellent performances. Their effortless performances, without any loudness, convey both emotion and pain easily to the audience.

This was a challenging task for composer A.R. Rahman, as he didn't have to create music for the songs, but rather let the music speak, communicate with the audience, and reinforce the emotions. Rahman has accomplished this beautifully.

Siddharth Jadhav is a complete success in delivering the comedic scenes. Everyone from Charlie Chaplin to Mr. Bean has delivered silent comedy, and the scenes between Vijay and Siddharth here tickle the audience—full marks to him.

The direction has already been praised, but what's even more remarkable is that one man, driven by his conviction for 15 years, convinced everyone from actors to producers to the studio to make a silent film, and finally got the film made and released. In an era of box office numbers, audiences should show the same love for this film as these people have shown. Because even though this film is silent, it speaks a deeper message than today's masala films.

There are many scenes in the film that could be discussed in detail, but this would reveal the story. It's better to go and see it for yourself, and encourage the producers and directors who want to make meaningful cinema.
