There are sharp-witted comedies, and then there are capers so inane that you don’t quite know whether you’re laughing at the content or at the sheer ridiculousness of it all. Director duo Kavi Shastri and Vir Das’s (also the lead) Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos firmly belongs to the latter category. The film opens in 1991 Goa, with flamboyant don Jimmy Mario (Aamir Khan) taking on two British spies, only to accidentally kill their house help, who leaves her baby behind. It’s the end of Jimmy, too, but the beginning of his daughter’s future as Mama.
The story follows Mama as she kidnaps a scientist to develop a fairness formula that promises lighter skin in just 21 days. But science isn’t her only agenda. She also wants to avenge her father’s death, which occurred at the hands of Happy’s adoptive dads, the British spies. Cut to 2025, and Happy is introduced while assembling a gun—without the trigger—setting the tone for the chaos to follow.
Throughout the film, situations are coated with comedy and peppered with satire. The spy genre is turned on its head: that agents are alpha males is dispelled as Happy prances around in ballet shoes and cooks elaborate meals. Communication through Morse code is replaced by slurps of chai; there are no bikini-clad femmes fatales, but an item dancer, Rupa (Mithila Palkar), whose jhatkas and matkas feel like she’s touched a live wire; torture involves three tone-deaf goons singing endlessly.
How long can mispronunciations and mangled vocabulary delivered in a firangi accent stretch the laughs? Quite a while, if the writers are Das and Amogh Ranadive. The humour is amped up by minor characters and recurring gags: a random gora popping up every time Happy mispronounces tum as Tom; an elderly waiter who moves slower than an Internet Explorer browser; Happy dodging Mama’s attacks with Bollywood dance moves, including a perfectly timed Chhaiyya Chhaiyya hook step. The madness is elevated by an equally zany soundtrack by Das, Parth Parekh, Shalom Benjamin, and others. Bangers like Phukt Apan, Chaanta Tera, Cous Cous, etc. fit the tone of the action comedy.
Vir Das is the film’s undeniable star. From a dunce who misses the memo that he’s a brown man to a spy who learns the tricks of the trade from Bollywood films and delivers lines like “Maine pulley baar masseuse kiya hai (Maine pehli baar mehsoos kiya),” he is consistently brilliant. Mona Singh shines as Mama, the kingpin with a rolling pin and two passions: cooking and crime. Sharib Hashmi adds to the fun as the local coordinator spy, Geet, especially when he squeals “Daddy!” every time Happy channels Shah Rukh Khan. Mithila Palkar matches their energy, while Aamir Khan stands out in a comic cameo. Imran Khan, as international supermodel Milind, deserves special applause—his appearance doubling as a cheeky nod to Delhi Belly and Pappu Can’t Dance Saala.
The film has no real plot, but it hardly needs one. Its eccentric characters and absurd situations turn the narrative into a tightly packed laugh riot that keeps the viewer engaged from start to finish.

In his latest post, Vir Das mentioned how this film is “extra”, and that’s exactly how one can describe it. Directors Vir Das and Kavi Shastri (yes, the hottie from Rishta.com) make no attempt to tone it down, which only adds to the fun. The humour may require an acquired taste, but it’s been so long since we saw something like Delhi Belly, Go Goa Gone or even Kaalakaandi that you want to sit back and laugh with Happy Patel.

The way the characters and plotlines are written may make you roll your eyes, but they also draw giggles for their sheer absurdity. Of course, it’s not flawless, and at times you feel the writers indulged a bit too much, but full credit to them and producer Aamir Khan for the sheer audacity of the attempt.
Vir Das had set expectations high with the clever marketing assets ahead of the release, and it now feels like he was simply preparing the audience for this madcap ride. It’s hard to pin down the film’s genre, as the narrative keeps shifting gears. At different points, it plays out as a spy thriller, a romantic comedy, a gangster drama, a suspense tale and even an emotional story of an NRI rediscovering his roots. In the way it’s shaped, the film at times also feels like an extension of Vir’s show I Come From Two Indias. His training sequence at the MI7 warehouse to enter India as a spy is among the funniest bits, as he’s taught everything Bollywood and desi. As the film unfolds, it becomes clear just how unreal our movies are, and yet, that’s the version of India that we, and the world, recognise.
The earnest, large-hearted Happy Smith-Paisley, aka Patel, might well be the most clueless hero you have seen in recent times, but the film embraces him wholeheartedly. The screenplay, dialogues and, most notably, the reaction shots consistently raise laughs. Emmy Award-winning stand-up comedian Vir Das takes on the task of proving himself as an actor and manages to clear that test comfortably. There’s nothing ‘khatarnak’ about this spy. He exists largely as the punchline. Yet, the innocence and sincerity he brings, coupled with his deadpan expressions in the most chaotic moments, work strongly in his favour.


Mithila Palkar and Mona Singh are given impactful parts, and both make the most of their screen time. Mona, almost unrecognisable as Mama, is styled as a stereotypical Goan gangster ending her sentences with 'man'. She even gets to have a Gabbar Singh's 'Kitne aadmi the' moment. Mithila adds warmth and playfulness to the narrative, and her chemistry with Vir lands well. Rapper Srushti Tawde makes her acting debut here and stands in for Gen Z: tech-savvy, candid and armed with some of the film’s funniest reactions. However, it’s Sharib Hashmi, sporting his Laal Singh Chaddha look, who walks away with the biggest slice of the cake. His comic timing and delivery underline why he remains one of the most dependable performers around.

The opening sequence featuring Aamir Khan and Sumukhi Suresh neatly sets the mood for the silly, self-aware journey that follows. Their appearances, along with cameos by Imran Khan, are woven smartly into the script. None of them feel like last-minute additions meant purely to grab attention. Imran, playing supermodel Milind Morea (a tongue-in-cheek mash-up of Milind Soman and Dino Morea), is a particular highlight. We already know how he personally reached out to Vir for a role, and one can only hope he doesn't take another extended break from the screen after the film.
Vir Das show tickets are notoriously expensive and hard to come by, so watching him in Happy Patel might be the easier option for his fans. Don’t go in expecting depth or messaging. Just settle in and enjoy along.

Though set in the past, Aamir Khan proves his patriotism for India in 2026 through his Charles Manson-esque don of Goa Jimmy Mario, a day after he waded into the ever-simmering language row in Maharashtra. "Die, you English pigs!" he screams. His Jimmy Mario also lusts after a househelp (a crackling Sumukhi Suresh) and gets scolded by his fed-up wife for messing the clean floor with blood.

Cut to 2025, Happy Patel is so happily ignorant about his real identity that he does a double take when he overhears his gay dads, who are former MI7 intelligence agents, talking about him being an Indian. He is 34, has failed the MI7 exam 7 times, makes "lovely sandwiches" while doing ballet in a pink jumper, as the Brits would say. He loves feeding people and when he reaches India after multilevel spy training for a special assignment, he is the happiest in a sabzi mandi.

He is told that spreading his arms wide and dishing out the iconic "Bade bade deshon mein" dialogue from Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge on Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham's Suraj Hua Maddham, like Shah Rukh Khan, is the Indian mating call.

Armed with nothing but his training, understanding of spices and blessing of his dads, Happy Patel lands in Goa's Panjor to rescue a British dermatological scientist called Beatrice Fefferbaum whose fairness cream formula yields results in 21 days.
All she leaves a clue before going missing is the letter 'M' painting on her house's wall. Is it a place, like Maldives, asks Happy Patel's local handler, Geet (an amiable Sharib Hashmi)? Is it a politician, he gives it another guess, before both of them mutually decide it would be something else. *I see what you did there*

We then find out that Mama, the bhai of Goa, has kidnapped Beatrice Fefferbaum and wants her to prepare a fairness formula for her beauty line called Mamareal. Mona Singh gets her long-awaited due named Mama (err, yes...), a blood-thirsty villain, an always pink-wearing Dolores Umbridge-ish, who never raises her voice and has a crush on superchef Sanjeev Kapoor, even as she ends every sentence with the cliched Goan-stereotype 'man'. Mama's goons too flaunt pink-coloured and floral shirts.

Mithila Palkar's dancing queen who can't dance, Rupa Kumar, Happy Patel's love interest whose reflex action for a kiss is a tight slap, and rapper Srushti Tawde (Main Nahi Toh Kaun Be) as Roxy, Happy Patel's local handler's handler who is a tech prodigy make the best of what they've been given. Special shout-out to the actor who plays the firangi tourist 'Tom' who pops up every time Happy Patel 'mispronounces' the Hindi word 'Tum'.

And, when Happy Patel and Mama, both cooks, meet each other for the first time, they talk in cooking analogy much to the confusion of others. Watch out for their much-awaited face-off in the end at a place where they spend most of their time when not doing their set jobs: in the kitchen.

As 'international supermodel' Milind Morea, Imran Khan gets a hero's entry at a crucial juncture in the film. In his first movie in 10 years, the actor fights goons and even disarms one of them with his charming smile. In a hat-tip to Delhi Belly, Happy Patel and Milind Morea sort of recognise each other as they fly across the room fighting off Mama's men. Be ready for another Delhi Belly cast member to make an appearance.

A key mention to Ram Sampath, the Aamir Khan Productions dependable composer, whose soundtrack is worth a listen; the Falafel-CousCous song gives tough competition to Dhurandhar's FA9LA.

Happy Patel: Khatarnaak Jasoos is a far cry from the very serious, brooding spies in Dhurandhar, Pathaan and Ek Tha Tiger, and we are not complaining.

Finally, there’s a comedy film that doesn’t rattle or pack a slapstick punch! More often than not, our sequel and threequel comic capers reinforce garish gags laced with sexism, sexual innuendoes and punchlines on women’s bodies. But thankfully, after Go Goa Gone and Delhi Belly, here we’ve Vir Das once again taking clichés and flipping the narrative and creating an absurd world. In his directorial debut Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, his humour operates as satire, couching politics in wit.

Happy Patel is an eccentric, quirky, preposterous film. And yet, it’s not frivolous. The film opens with a hilarious fight sequence between two parties – a local don from Goa and two special agents from the UK. The result? Sakhubai, a maid, loses her life while trying to protect a vase amid this pandemonium. The local gangster also gets shot. He somehow manages to reach home only to be reprimanded by his wife for spilling blood on the floor that she has just cleaned with phenyl.
His nincompoop sons are also indifferent to his fatal injury. He tries to tell them that they’ll have to carry his legacy ahead but his young daughter decides that she’ll be carrying the baton forward. Sakhubai’s toddler son, on the other hand, survives the bloodbath and is adopted by the special agents. Years later, the boy who has been named Happy Smith-Paisley grows up to be a chef. Unlike his fathers who wielded guns, Happy has failed his MI7 tests seven times. But he loves his kitchen and ballet shoes.

Back in Goa’s Panjor, the legacy-bearing daughter Mama now runs her own brand called Mamareal under which she sells fairness creams to fair-skin obsessed Indians. In her words, Mamareal can best be described as “FMCG meets crime". But Mama is more than an entrepreneur. She’s a dreaded don, who has kidnapped British dermatology scientist Beatrice and has coerced her into manufacturing creams and lotions that can brighten skin tones in 21 days.
MI7 enters the picture and they decide to send Happy to fight Mama in Goa and rescue Beatrice. Thus begins his Indian-fication. Happy is taught to speak Hindi, bargain with vegetable sellers, fight like Rohit Shetty’s heroes, romance Indian women like Shah Rukh Khan and eat without a spoon. Once in Goa, he befriends Geet and Roxy, falls in love with a dancer named Rupa and begins his mission to crush Mama.

Yes, this is a chaotic plot. So, don’t try to find any meaning and logic here. And sometimes, there’s no method to this madness. But it’s the solid screenplay by Vir and Amogh Ranadive that keeps it all together. Kudos to them and co-director Kavi Shastri for creating and executing a 1-hour-59-minute long crisp film just on Indians, their quirks and their obsession with light skin! Here and there, the makers nonchalantly reference the socio-politics of the country, colonialism and Rishi Sunak’s rule, leaving you cackling and chuckling.


It’s in these ironies too that Happy Patel thrives. Happy, a khatarnak jasoos, is after all the poster boy of soft masculinity. As his girlfriend Rupa slaps him as ‘reflex action’ every time he tries to woo her, he patiently lets her slap him a few more times before she can finally become comfortable with his acts of affection. When he feels Geet perhaps getting slightly infatuated with him, his masculinity doesn’t get threatened. And yes, there are oodles of repartees with sexual innuendos too. But never for once do they make your squirm.

The cherry on the cake of this stupendous screenplay is the performances. Vir as Happy is in top form. He’s effortlessly funny. He deserves extra points for his British-meets-Hindi accent. ‘Ladki’ for him is ‘lakdi’ and ‘tum’ for him is ‘Tom’. And every time, he says ‘Tom’, a random British guy appears onscreen, lurking in the backdrop. It’s so bizarre and random that it’s hysterical. Sharib Hashmi does a good job too. The women, Mona Singh – who doesn’t forget to mouth the colloquial ‘men’ at the end of all her sentences – and Mithila Palkar, deserve special mentions.

Mona as Mama is menacing and unassumingly so. She doesn’t blink even once before chopping off fingers, is obsessed with chef Sanjeev Kapoor and his cutlets, and isn’t afraid to slap him when things don’t go her way. This time around, she barters emotional heavy-lifting with some action sequences and it’s nice to watch her intimidate Happy. Mithila as Rupa is scintillating, lighting up the screen each time she appears. Sumukhi Suresh as Sakhubai is delightful.

There are some surprises too. This time around, Aamir Khan plays Mona’s father. He seems to be an extension of himself from Delhi Belly’s I Hate You (Like I Love You). His wicked chutzpah and impeccable comic timing will leave you in splits. And then there’s Imran Khan. Yes, he’s back! He plays international supermodel Milind Morea. As he fights Mama’s men for a Mamareal contract that doesn’t sit well with him, there’s a brief slow-motion moment where he locks eyes with Happy. Bhaag DK Bose plays in the backdrop, washing your heart with nostalgia.

Happy Patel very much belongs to the world of Delhi Belly and maybe even Madgaon Express. It can best be described as a puzzle where the pieces don’t even belong together. And the fact that it doesn’t fit into Bollywood’s definition of a comic caper or our collective consciousness for that matter is what makes the film unique. Happy Patel is a breath of fresh air. The absurdity of it will leave you wanting for more. Don’t miss out on this one! Because films like this don’t come very often.

Vir Das’s flawlessly brilliant writing is the true hero of the film. The subtle dig at a certain powerful personality, the judicious use of profanity, and the inclusion of adult humour, all of it, will leave you in stitches. Yes, you read that correctly- the smart and thoughtful writing of the dialogues, situations, and puns will make you laugh until your core hurts. In the typical cinematic world, addressing the aforementioned topics could result in producers facing numerous legal and defamation cases; however, Happy Patel simply makes you laugh. The Delhi Belly references and the cameos by Aamir Khan and Imran Khan add a solid punch to the narrative.
Aamir Khan: You will completely forget you are watching Aamir Khan on screen; he has thoroughly immersed himself in the character. His command over the minute nuances is what truly sets him apart.
Vir Das: Where does one even begin to praise this man! He is incredibly talented, and there is never a dull moment when he is on screen. He carries the entire film on his shoulders, thanks to his 'swaad anusaar' (as per taste) broken Hindi.
Mona Singh: Could you have ever imagined Mona Singh slaying the role of a dreaded local don with such finesse? Every time she appears on screen, you know the unpredictable is bound to happen.
Mithila Palkar: Known for her girl-next-door image, Mithila, as Rupa, will surprise you with her sheer calibre.
Sharib Hashmi: It was a delight to watch him as Geet, laughs were ensured every time he appeared on the screen.
Srushti Tawade: She lends able support as Roxy and plays a very crucial role in the film despite the limited screen time.
If you are a cricket lover, Happy Patel has a surprise stored just for you. Spot it if you can! Whether Happy Patel will get the cash counters ringing remains to be seen, but we can assure you it will multiply your laughter. It’s a Happy Pa(tale).
