HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is adapted from a book of the same name by Cressida Cowell. The story is fantastic. Dean DeBlois's screenplay moves at a fair pace and has enough funny, dramatic and emotional moments that keep the interest going. The dialogues add to the entertainment.

Dean DeBlois's direction is simple. He was one of the directors and writers of the 2010 animated original and hence, it was a given that he would know his job well. Yet, adapting an animated film into a live action can also pose challenges. But Dean comes out with flying colours. The basic storyline is the same but he has tweaked certain plot points. The intentions of certain characters are now much more defined. The animated film has a scene where Hiccup brings the dragon to the village to tweak the prosthetic design. It is a scene which always seemed far-fetched. Thankfully, the makers have eliminated it completely. On the other hand, a scene where the Vikings get attacked by dragons when they set out to find the nest has been added and it makes for a nice watch.
On the flipside, since it’s the same story compared to the original, those who have seen the 2010 film repeatedly will not find anything new in terms of plot, except for minor tweaks. The makers have also shown that people of other ethnicities also reside with the Vikings in Berk. But it served no relevance to the story. It would have been great to see them fighting the dragons in their style. Shockingly, they were conveniently forgotten after their memorable introduction. Lastly, the series is not as popular in India as it is in the West, which can prove detrimental.
Mason Thames delivers a stupendous performance. He gets his act just right without going overboard. Gerard Butler slips into his character effortlessly and delivers a great act. Nico Parker (Astrid) has an arresting screen presence and performance-wise, she's first-rate. Nick Frost lends able support. As for the actors who play teen warriors, Julian Dennison (Fishlegs) is the most memorable followed by Gabriel Howell (Snotlout), Bronwyn James (Ruffnut) and Harry Trevaldwyn (Tuffnut). Naomi Wirthner (Gothi) is decent and the character has much more screen time this time.
On the whole, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON is a faithful adaptation of the 2010 animated flick and is a well-made family entertainer. Since the popularity of the series is limited in India, it'll need patronage from its target audience to score at the box office

Most live-action adaptations of animated movies get a bad rap for straying from the source material, subpar CGI, and the stark visual disconnect between the two mediums. Not so with writer-director Dean DeBlois’s outing, which stays remarkably faithful to the original 2010 film on all accounts. The narrative is an almost scene-by-scene replica of the beloved animated fare. And it recreates its world with striking realism and cinematic aesthetics, seamlessly blending human characters and fantastical beasts.
The film launches into visually stunning thrills early on with a battle between the Vikings and dragons. Thereafter, it consistently delivers an exciting ride, breathing life into characters and sequences that gobsmacked viewers the first time around. The story follows a clumsy Hiccup, who struggles to live up to his Viking legacy and slay dragons. Instead, he empathises with them and recognises their need to defend themselves. While this premise paves the way for an unlikely bond between humans and dragons, the narrative does not skimp on action, as the two forces clash at the dragons’ nest, home to the monstrous Queen Dragon who demands to be fed.
Though the new movie is a respectful and sincere redux, the narrative sometimes lacks the original’s irreverence. The humour is, at times, traded for emotion. Some bits also feel shallow and forced—like Stoick struggling to have a father-son conversation with Hiccup after he returns from a mission to hunt the dragons’ nest. The part about Toothless not being, well, toothless, was one of the most fun moments in the original, which isn’t as impactful here.
Cinematographer Bill Pope gives the narrative a captivating look, with misty cliffs, rugged coastlines, rolling meadows, and grey seas. The narrative retains key thrills like Hiccup and Toothless’s flight through the gorges and the Vikings-dragons battle. The set and character as well as creature designs are translated stunningly well.
Mason Thames shines as the awkward, lanky Hiccup, while Gerard Butler revisits his voice role with finesse, and the supporting cast stands out, too. Nico Parker is strong as the brave young captain Astrid and pulls off the action scenes with elan. Nick Frost as Gobber, Julian Dennison as the nerdy Fishlegs, Gabriel Howell as the brash Snotlout, and Bronwyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn as twin siblings Ruffnut and Tuffnut round out the ensemble.
The immersive ride, where charm meets cinematic spectacle and thrills, makes it a worthwhile watch—both for those new to the Vikings-versus-Dragons world and for returning fans of the beloved franchise.

With few differences but several technological updates, DeBlois has brought to the screen a live-action remake of his 2010 animation success by the same name.

You may not have needed this update, particularly as the animation’s trilogy was quite fulfilling on its own. However, DeBlois doesn’t hold back, going about his story (based on a book by Cressida Cowell) about the generations-old battle between Vikings and dragons with all the seriousness and big set pieces of the subject.

Thomas is befitting (if a bit oldish) as Hiccup, the son of the Viking chief (Butler) who has been written off for not having the courage to fight dragons. The relationship between the father and son is touching in its awkwardness, with the macho masculinity of Stoick the father having little in common with the calming gentleness of Hiccup. This is even true when Stoick thinks that Hiccup may finally have earned his stripes as a Viking by learning to fight dragons.
When Hiccup and Toothless the Night Fury dragon develop their bond, and their eyes meet, it is as warm and touching as it was 15 years ago. When they fly together, you can still feel the thrill.
However, ultimately, How to Train Your Dragon is a trip down a familiar memory lane. And at a time when few can resist cashing in on a franchise, a conceit that does not belong in that innocent world that Hiccup and Toothless helped create.


Some tales are beyond redundancy. Despite the utmost familiarity and success, they get retold again and again throughout history, and we call them classics. Hence, a question about the purpose of a new iteration of an age-old classic is unnecessary, to an extent, absurd. How To Train Your Dragon, written by Cressida Cowell, is one such story. Hence, despite the tremendous success of its animated adaptation of the same name that was released in 2010, we now have a live-action version. However, DreamWorks Studio’s decision to do a live-action remake has more to do with easy profit than anything else. Following Disney’s route, the studio has ventured into this new space, and one should say they have hit a jackpot. Despite being a faithful remake of the original, the live-action remake retains the joy and visual spectacle that is a treat to both sets of audience: those who are and are not aware of this delectable world of dragons and Vikings.
For the uninitiated, How To Train Your Dragon is a story of Hiccup (Mason Thames), a shy boy in the Viking village named Berk. It is not any other Viking village but one where the best of them have gathered to fight their arch-nemesis—dragons. “Most people would leave. Not us. We are Vikings. We have stubbornness issues," Hiccup says in the opening lines of the film. Unlike his dad Stoick (Gerard Butler), Berk’s chief, Hiccup is rather timid. Even his father considers him not to have what it takes to be a dragon slayer. But Hiccup has something that no other Viking in the village has, and that something makes him pet a dragon; not any dragon, but one belonging to the mysterious breed, Night Fury. Even the century-old book of Berk doesn’t have any information about Night Fury, but Hiccup turns it into his dear friend.
While almost all of the original version is retained in the new adaptation, what becomes new and effective is the performance of the aptly cast actors. While there were several criticisms and doubts regarding the choice of actors, the film has put an end to it all. Mason Thames is perfect as a skinny and shy Hiccup. His scenes with Gerard Butler as Stoick are some of the best acting chops in the movie. To make it more real, the makers have imbibed a serious tone in the conversations and performances, which is not seen in the original. This brings the much-needed depth to the live-action remake and saves it from becoming cartoonish.

The other wonderful aspect of the film is its visuals. The makers have struck a great balance in retaining the vibrant tone of the animated version but have still managed to create a realistic fantasy world. The design of Toothless is the best example of this perfect blend. The texture of the creature is realistic but still retains the cuddliness of the comic version. The production design and the costumes are also in perfect sync with the overall tone of the visuals, making the film a visual treat. The moments of Astrid’s first ride on Toothless with Hiccup through the clouds and the Northern Lights hit the right spot and bring back the memories of watching the animated film for the first time, and you realise why you fell in love with this simple but deep story that undercuts the general notions of courage, valour, and bravery.
