Nearly thirty years after the original 1997 scare-fest, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ returns with unabashed homage to its source material. Director and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, alongside Sam Lansky and Leah McKendrick, sticks firmly to the franchise template: sealed-envelope dread, fish-hook kills and seaside suspense. For fans of the original, this is a blood-soaked nostalgia trip; for newcomers, it’s a well-crafted, somewhat predictable, but a bold slasher ride nevertheless.
Visually, the film excels. Southport’s boardwalks, plush yet dimly-lit villas and busy coastlines are shot with polished cinematography (by Elisha Christian) that amplifies every lurking shadow. The pacing rarely stalls, and the horror set-pieces arrive in rapid succession, as the body count keeps mounting. The film’s screenplay is brisk, and while the story never truly surprises, when the gore quotient is dialled up, it makes for a chilling scene. The background score is adequately scary, but the motive is where the fault lies —such a bloody revenge for a manslaughter accident rather than premeditated murder? This may stretch believability for more rational viewers. But that said, horror fans will love the bloody kills and nonstop jump-scares despite the flimsy reasoning behind it.
Performances anchor the film. Madelyn Cline surprisingly emerges as the standout, imbuing Danica’s “dumb blonde” vibes, who in her own words is vain enough to think about her skincare routine even when a close someone is killed brutally. But eventually, her persona resonates with just enough depth to make her arc very satisfying. Chase Sui Wonders and Jonah Hauer-King bring passable chemistry as Ava and Milo, their guilt and paranoia palpable. Tyriq Withers is aptly cast as the buff Teddy Spencer, who drinks first, thinks later. Attempts to reintegrate original survivors Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.) are obvious fan-service, shoe-horned into a story that otherwise stands independently. They deserved more screentime.
The slasher’s fish-hook kills are grislier than ever, balanced by jump-scares that land with satisfying snap. While genre devotees will delight in the gore, the film could have been a little more inventive and deep at least with a solid back story and a motive —its safety within franchise bounds means few surprises. Musically, the background score (Chanda Dancy) supports tension effectively.
In the end, ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ offers exactly what it promises: relentless thrills, non-stop supply of blood and gore and a hefty dose of nostalgia. It may not break new ground, but it re-sharpens it, delivering a lean, entertaining slasher that honours its roots. For loyal fans and horror aficionados, this fish-hook revival is a satisfying return to Southport’s haunted shores.

It’s been nearly three decades since 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' (1997) hit screens, turning four impossibly attractive young stars, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr, and Ryan Phillippe, into teen horror royalty. Back then, a group of friends covered up a hit-and-run and found themselves stalked by a fisherman with a deadly hook. Now, in 2025, the fisherman’s back, and so is the formula. But this time, things are bloodier, glossier, and perhaps a little more self-aware.Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge), this reboot-slash-soft sequel doesn’t pretend to be high art. It leans into the genre’s campy roots and throws in a self-referential wink every few scenes. But does it thrill like the original? Sometimes. Does it make sense? Not always.

The new ensemble of scream teens, played by Madelyn Clyne, Tyriq Withers, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, and Sarah Pidgeon, finds themselves in a familiar situation. After a car accident on a cliffside that was barely their fault, they decide to stage a cover-up instead of calling the cops, even though one of them is loaded and could’ve likely walked free with a decent PR team. But logic is rarely a slasher’s strong suit. What matters is - the hook is back.
The characters are deliberately exaggerated, almost to the point of parody. Clyne’s Danica is a breathy, ditzy heiress with no sense of continuity between partners or priorities. Withers’ Teddy is the guy who hits the sauna mid-serial-killer crisis (!!). Chase Sui Wonders plays Ava, the only one trying to make decent decisions but far too distracted by her sketchy ex Milo (Hauer-King who is serving "mysterious hottie" energy). Then there’s Pidgeon as Stevie, the token working-class friend turned semi-sellout, and arguably the only one with a real emotional arc.
Their chemistry is decent, even if their decisions aren’t. The script plays it knowingly dumb, as if daring you to take it seriously, and that’s oddly part of the fun. And just when you find yourself chuckling at the absurdity of this Gen-Z’ed story, nostalgia hits back with Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Julie James, the OG Final Girl, flanked by Freddie Prinze Jr’s Ray making appearances.

The film’s strongest weapon isn’t fear, it’s familiarity. The coastal aesthetics are moody, the kills are stylish, and the hook still gleams under dramatic lighting. There are fleeting moments of tension and clever commentary on class, image, and identity, but it’s all wrapped in layers of genre tropes that the film half-mocks, half-embraces.

The 2025 reboot of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' is entertaining enough to warrant a watch, especially for horror fans and nostalgia-seekers. However, it stops short of becoming the genre-defining update it aspires to be. It’s a decent scream, just not a haunting one.
