Directed by Venkat Kalyan and Abhishek Jaiswal, Jatadhara attempts a striking blend of mythology and modernity. The premise is intriguing, and the visual treatment gives the story a distinct scale. However, while the film opens promisingly, it falters in moments, with abrupt narrative shifts that make it difficult to connect the dots between subplots. Several stretches feel prolonged, keeping the viewer waiting a little too long for twists that turn out to be predictable.
Sudheer Babu delivers a convincing performance, anchoring the film as a rational ghost hunter caught in an extraordinary situation. Sonakshi Sinha makes a powerful Telugu debut as Dhanapisachi, commanding attention despite having few lines. Shilpa Shirodkar, Divya Khossla, and Indira Krishna bring sensitivity to their parts, though their roles remain confined and underexplored, offering limited emotional depth.
On the technical front, the film impresses with its grandeur and visual appeal. The production design and cinematography effectively capture the mythic tone of the narrative, creating an atmospheric backdrop. The background score sustains engagement and adds weight to key moments, even when the pacing wavers. However, the editing could have been crisper, and the VFX, particularly in the climax, lack polish.
In the end, Jatadhara stands out for its visual ambition and strong performances, but struggles to maintain narrative cohesion. It’s a film that shines in parts yet never quite realises its full potential.

Apart from diverse religions and cultures, India is a land of mysterious rituals, which connect to spirits and energies, which are beyond science and the understanding of human minds.
Talking about the plot of Jatadhara, it narrates a past story of a village, where rich people possessing gold and precious ornaments are looted by dacoits, as during that time, there were no lockers. Despite hiding the precious things inside the land, their jewels were not safe.
Later, they come up with a solution by inviting pishachs through black magic, who will protect their gold but will only return the precious things to them after they sacrifice animals or sometimes a human in exchange.

Cut to, in the present time, Shiva (Sudheer Babu) is introduced as a ghost hunter who doesn’t believe in ghosts and often visits haunted places to experience energies.
However, he often has a dream of a middle-aged couple trying to kill an infant, only to later realise a negative energy named Dhan Pishachini (Sonakshi Sinha), who wants his sacrifice.

Shiva is now on a journey to find out his connection with Dhan Pishachini and why she wants to kill him.

Well, the concept is unique, but what lacks is the execution and especially the editing part, as it falters the narrative, leaving the audience confused. While the makers have played smart by dissing the songs, which hamper the narrative of these kinds of films, the shoddy VFX sometimes play a spoilsport.


Talking about the performances, Sudheer Babu is decent as Shiva but deserved a better arc. Sonakshi Sinha unfortunately disappoints, as it is not a role which allows her to showcase her acting mettle. All the supporting cast have done an okayish job, but none make a mark.

On the whole, Jatadhara deserves a watch for its unique and novel concept along with the ideation.

Sudheer Babu

Sonakshi Sinha is an actress who made her debut with the 2010 action-drama film Dabangg. Daughter of actors Shatrughan Sinha and Poonam Sinha, Sonakshi has explored multiple areas before entering movies. She started her career as a model, walking at the Lakme Fashion Week in 2008. She also worked as a costume designer for films in 2005. She received several awards such as Filmfare and IIFA for her debut performance. Her acting skills were also appreciated in the 2014 film Lootera for which she won the Zee Cine Critics Award for Best Actor- Female. Sonakshi has made several television appearances as a judge on talent shows.

Sonakshi Sinha

Shilpa Shirodkar is an Indian actress born on November 20, 1985. She made her debut with the movie named Bhrashtachar (1989) and after that appeared in many movies including Hum (1991), Gopi Kishan (1994), Pehchaan (1993), Bewafa Sanam (1995) etc. Shilpa also acted in TV serials such as Ek Mutthi Aasamaan.

She has been featured in some music videos and one of her videos crossed the highest watched song on youtube. SHe will be next seen in Satyameva Jayate 2 opposite John Abraham which will be releasing in 2020.
