‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ falls short of the brilliance that defined the original. The film struggles with its identity, caught between exploring a dark love story between Arthur Fleck and Lee Quinzel and advancing its narrative. This indecision results in a disjointed experience, lacking the raw intensity and sharpness of its predecessor. The decision to incorporate musical elements feels forced, dragging the film’s already weak pacing. While Joaquin Phoenix once again shines with a captivating performance, his efforts alone cannot salvage a film that feels creatively lost and thematically diluted.

The story opens at Gotham’s Departmental Correctional Facility, where Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix) awaits trial. There, he meets Lee Quinzel (Lady Gaga), and it's love at first sight. Lee, already obsessed with Fleck, knows all about his infamous killings, thanks to the extensive media coverage. Due to his good behaviour, Arthur is allowed to attend music classes, where Lee happens to teach inmates. As the trial moves forward, Lee convinces Fleck to fire his attorney, Maryanne Stewart (Catherine Keener), believing she is weakening his defense. Fleck then chooses to represent himself in court. When the jury finds him guilty on all five counts, chaos erupts in Gotham. Disaster strikes when Fleck returns to the facility.

Joaquin Phoenix once again delivers a captivating performance as Arthur Fleck, but the film's weak foundation drastically lessens its impact. His dedication to the role is undeniable, reaffirming that few can match his skill in portraying complex characters. Lady Gaga as Lee brings some intrigue and freshness early on, but as the film progresses, her character's arc flattens, leaving it underwhelming. The chemistry between Phoenix and Gaga lacks the spark that was crucial for this story. The biggest letdown is Harry Lawtey as Harvey Dent, who fails to leave a mark in the courtroom sequences. Steve Coogan, despite his brief appearance, makes an impact. Todd Phillips' direction feels aimless, and while his attempt to introduce a musical element is bold, it ultimately strays too far. The blend of psychological drama with musical elements comes off as a failed experiment. ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ isn’t a terrible film, but it falls far short of the expectations set by its predecessor. Keeping expectations low for this unnecessary sequel might be wise.

Joker is still not the Batman nemesis nor the Gotham ghoul he will be. Instead, Todd Phillips’s eponymous character takes an almost regular-man trajectory in this second outing, with good actors in side roles providing layers to his increasingly unsettled world.

The killing spree of two years ago has landed Arthur Fleck a.k.a Joker (Phoenix) in Arkham penitentiary. He is in the Department of Corrections centre, taking prescribed medication pills and enduring the kind of daily humiliations that had turned out so wrongly for him last time.

Arthur and Lee, whose real name is Harley Quinnzel (later to be known as Harley Quinn), very quickly fall for each other. This being a musical, their repertoire of well-performed songs is one thing that connects them. Another thing is the interesting sub-plot of Lee seeking out a frisson of excitement in her comfortable upper-middle class existence.

In terms of a storyline, this co-writer-director effort by Phillips is more settled, more mature and less desperate in trying to craft a hero for our times.
