Vignesh Raja understands that the opening minutes of a film are its most expensive real estate, and Kara's first fifteen are spent like he knows exactly what they cost. A stormy-night break-in at an MLA's house finds Karasaami (Dhanush) and Murugesan (Prithvi Pandiarajan) after the man's valuables, in a location that isn't strictly remote but has been shot to feel like the loneliest place in 1991. The theft doesn't go to plan, and that's almost beside the point. What pins you to the seat is the staging, the lighting, and the sound design, tuned for equal parts dread and adrenaline.
After a brief but brutal lockup with DSP Bharathan (Suraj Venjaramoodu), Kara escapes that night, returns to his home village in Ramanathapuram, and swears to his wife that the thieving days are done. The Gulf War's fuel crisis is hollowing out the region. Then his father (an emotive KS Ravikumar) dies suddenly, the bank produces a loan default, and the ancestral land is on the chopping block. It's time for old habits to meet new desperation.
What Vignesh does well is letting every player earn his corner of the ring. Jayaram plays the regional bank manager quietly hollowing out the system from inside. His actions basically cover every bank scandal you might have witnessed. DSP Bharathan is the cop chasing Karasaami, and the film smartly resists making him a loathsome figure. He needs to catch Kara not because justice demands it, but because he wants to be famous. Kandhasaami, Karasaami's father, holds the emotional core in his brief screen time with very little fuss. He's the reason Kara's return to crime carries any sentimental charge at all.
That triangle gives the film more weight than the usual reformed-thief saga. The Robin Hood angle is the easy read: banks bleed illiterate villagers with paperwork they can't possibly decode. While Kara starts out to steal for his own reasons (to repay his father's loan and claim back the land), it soon morphs into a story of the entire region where ordinary citizens are saddled by debt and mounds of paperwork. You can see how this outlaw is turning into a local legend, bit by bit.
Where the film loses ground is in its commitment to the Dhanush sentiment factory. Land, parents, husbandhood, ancestral pride: similar shortcomings of his recent Idli Kadai. Every emotional thread gets pulled on, and after a while you feel the pattern more than the feeling. Vignesh loves his symbolism too (and so does Dhanush), and there's a discipline missing here that would have given the quirkier instincts more room to breathe. The micro-predictability bites as well. Cues, glances, slow turns, you can clock most of them three beats early.
Dhanush is as reliable as ever here. He carries the weight by always being around. Mamitha Baiju has more of a cursory role than anything. Suraj Venjaramoodu and Jayaram possess a similar degree of both comic and serious depth. Their dynamic balances out the overt sentimentality. GV Prakash's evocative score sets the tone throughout. Not too loud, and not totally missing.
Kara doesn't reinvent anything, and it doesn't pretend to. It’s skillful execution and strong performances, with a touch of forgivable cliché.

There's a vague similarity between Kara and Dhanush's recent directorial Idli Kadai — both feature him as a grief-stricken son fulfilling his father's wish. While Idli Kadai leaned dramatic, Kara builds genuine tension, especially in its robbery sequences. Kara is the stronger film of the two, though both arrive at a similar destination: good, but short of great.

The film opens with Kara aka Karasaaami (Dhanush), who has committed to do his last robbery. He teaches his aide how to rob as it could help him, and he wants to get married to Selli (Mamitha Baiju). He succeeds in the plan, well, mostly. But, Kara is forced to return to his village to meet his father to sell his land for money to set up a hotel (aka mess), which could help them lead a dignified life.
But Kara’s life takes a turn as he gets to know about his father Kandasaami’s (KS Ravikumar) plight. This puts him in a tricky situation that forces him to get back to the life of crime. Meanwhile, DSP Bharathan (Suraj Venjaramoodu), with limited clues, is breaking his head to nab the robber. Will Kara be able to escape from the ghost of his past? What is Kandasaami’s plight? All that and more unravel in 2 hours and 41 minutes.


Vignesh Raja draws you in from the very first frame — a robbery attempt that ends not in triumph but in a narrow escape, signalling the kind of film this is: a slow-burner focused on a corrupt banking system, its weight on the poor, and one man's attempt to push back against it.

Where Kara struggles is in the convergence of its two tracks — the heist thriller and the father-son drama. The family conflict feels convenient and predictable, with the background score doing the emotional heavy lifting that the writing should be doing. Mamitha Baiju's portions are limited and don't meaningfully deepen Kara's emotional arc.

The robbery sequences are where the film earns its keep. Vignesh Raja brings genuine attention to detail and a disciplined build of tension to each one — and no two feel alike. By the final heist, you're genuinely anxious for Kara. Dhanush and Suraj Venjaramoodu are both excellent here, and the supporting cast — Karunas, Prithvirajan, KS Ravikumar — hold their own in the margins.

The film's central concern — predatory bank loans and a system rigged against the poor — is worthwhile and timely. But Jayaram's bank manager Muthu Selvan, who anchors the central conflict, arrives too late, leaving the third act feeling rushed. The result is a final stretch where Kara's rise as village saviour feels compressed rather than earned.

Kara does a great job of documenting how the protagonist operates as a robber, but by moral standards. The messaging, though, is borderline problematic as the multiple robberies in the last act justify the wrongdoing.

Kara is a good film that had the scope to be a better one. Superlative performances and sharply crafted robbery sequences make it worth watching — but a more grounded emotional core in the first half would have made it brilliant.


Heist genre is one of Tamil cinema’s most reliable formats, and also one of its most abused. Done well, it is all architecture, every scene a load-bearing wall, every character a moving part in a machine that the audience can feel clicking into place. Done badly, it is just people running. Kara leans closer to the former than the latter, which in itself is an achievement worth acknowledging. Vignesh Raja understands that a heist is only as interesting as what it costs the person pulling it off, and he spends most of his film making sure you feel that cost.

Set in Ramanathapuram, 1991, we enter a world where petrol is scarce, the Gulf War is rattling economies far beyond the Middle East, and a man named Karasaami, played by Dhanush, is trying very hard to not become who he once was. That is where Kara drops you into, and for a good while, it is a world worth being in. Old associations resurface, old debts come calling, and Kara finds himself doing the one thing he swore he would never do again, pulling a job, this time to protect the people who depend on him. It is a familiar premise, a man dragged back in, one last time.

Dhanush is 54 films in and still the most interesting person in any frame he occupies. He plays Karasaami without any vanity, no grand entry, no slow motion hero moment, just a man who is tired and scared and trying to hold things together. His acting is not a mere technique, it lands as a natural instinct, and very few actors working today have it in that measure. His screen presence is insanely drawing, making all other characters fade away in the background. This is Dhanush at his best, doing what he does.
While the film deals with its own problems, one thing that is hard to not point out is Mamitha Baiju. She plays the role of Kara’s wife, Selli and is the one casting choice that does not fully land. While her character exists primarily to give Kara something to protect, but no amount of committed performance can make that interesting on its own. She tries but her limited screen time gives it away, and the material does not meet her halfway.

Direction and technical craft
Vignesh Raja made Por Thozhil three years ago and established he was a filmmaker worth watching. Though Kara confirms it, it comes with an asterisk. He builds the world slowly, deliberately, without an apology or hurry.

The interval block is the film’s trophy point. The robbery sequence stands out in the film and every beat lands. The tension builds and then breaks exactly when it should. It is the clearest proof that Raja knows what he is doing, and it makes what follows in the second half all the more deflating.
GV Prakash’s score deserves a mention because it is doing a lot of the film’s emotional heavy lifting, particularly in moments where the writing is not quite enough.

However, a strong lead isn’t enough to pull off a story which cannot pull you all the way through. Post interval, the story gets predictable, with the audience able to guess Kara’s moves. The story, that focuses on heist in the first half, slowly falls into vigilantism, and tries to defend it too. Somewhere in those last 40 minutes, you wish the film was trimmed so it doesn’t lose its pace.

However, amid all this, Dhanush does not let go. Even when the writing loosens around him, he stays rooted in the character, and that rootedness pulls you through scenes that have no business being as watchable as they are. There is a moment late in the second half, a quiet one, no music, no dramatic staging, where he simply sits with what his character has done and what it has cost him. It lasts maybe 30 seconds, but it’s by far the best moments of the film. That is both a compliment to the actor and an indictment of everything around him in that stretch.
Kara is a film that deserved a better second half. Vignesh Raja has the ability, that much is clear. He has the ability to pull the audience into the world he creates, and puts them on the edge of their seats. What he has not yet figured out is how to close. Por Thozhil had the same problem, but Kara repeats the pattern on a larger scale. However, none of this makes Kara a film you should skip.


There is a scene in Kara where Kara, aka Karasaami (Dhanush), stands in the scorching afternoon heat on his father's arid farm land in Kiliyur, Ramanathapuram, possibly reflecting on how his life too was the same. 

The Gulf War has resulted in empty petrol bunks and an economic crisis, with farmers unable to fertilise their land and struggling to pay bank loans. 

And it's here that Dhanush as Kara blurs the lines between performance and persona. Kara is carrying a burden that is heavy, and however much he tries to push ahead, the weight of his criminal past pulls him down.

Whenever there is a Dhanush movie release, the expectations are high as the Tamil star has always tried to give the audience films that have strong performances and stories, particularly rustic ones, that play to his strengths. Kara, directed by Vignesh Raja, who gave us Por Thozil in 2023, follows this template for the most part - it is set in Ramanathapuram in the 1990s and tells us the story of Karasaami.
When he plans to open an eatery, the need for collateral pushes him to return home to Kiliyur to make amends with his father (KS Ravi Kumar) to secure his share. But the situation in Kiliyur is not what he expected, and his life takes a sharp turn. He gets entwined in a people's struggle, and the need to protect them pushes him into direct conflict with Regional Bank Manager Muthu Selvan (Jayaram) and DSP Bharathan (Suraj Venjaramoodu).

In Kara, director and writer Vignesh Raja has crafted a village heist drama using the socio-economic situation in rural areas as the foundation. It is an intense character study of Kara, a man scarred by his background and circumstances, but is also socially conscious and a do-gooder. The film is held together and becomes a compelling watch only because of Karasaami.

Thus, there is overreliance on Karasaami - rather than the story - to carry the film from start to finish. When it comes to the antagonists, though, the director has made them pretty run-of-the-mill, which was a let-down. Having two of them also diluted the story, as neither one was a standout. The story falters in places because of its reliance solely on the bank loan theory and the consequences farmers face as a result. On the whole, Vignesh Raja seems to be more heavily invested in the emotional impact Kara would have on the audience.

Dhanush - as with all his performances- lives the life of Karasaami on screen. He performs extraordinarily well thanks to the strong emotional arc the director has etched for Kara. Karasaami is full of contradictions - one minute he explodes in anger and another weeps in silence - and Dhanush eases in and out of these transitions effortlessly. Suraj Venjaramoodu as the cop is a natural and lends the role the depth it requires. One just wishes the director had given him a much stronger role in the film. Jayaram breezes through his role as the bank manager, while Karunas delights as Kasi Mayan, a serious character rather the usual comical side piece. Director and actor KS Ravikumar, as Kara's father, packed a punch with his character. Mamitha Baiju doesn't have an extensive role, but she stood out as Selli, proving that she can ace rural characters as well. But she could have avoided the skin darkening.

Technically, the cinematography is beautiful with its rustic hues and gritty rural scenes. DOP Theni Easwar must be commended for his work on Kara because the cinematography reflects the mood of the scenes and conflicts every step of the way. And music director GV Prakash Kumar has worked his magic once again, as with other Dhanush films. The BGM complements the film, as do the songs.

Kara is a film that talks about the socioeconomic situation of farmers and questions the system, which it believes is skewed and unjustified. But the film, unfortunately, doesn't realise its full potential. The film rests on Dhanush's shoulders and is a compelling watch because of his brilliant performance.

Kara works primarily because of its interesting concept by Por Thozhil director Vignesh Raja. Much like his debut film, this movie relies on thrilling moments supported by a strong ensemble cast.

Dhanush delivers an exemplary performance, showcasing his range as an actor through a compelling character. On the technical front, the film stands out with its impressive background score and visuals, with the story itself being completely rooted in storytelling.
Additionally, the production design effectively recreates the 1990s setting, and the execution appears promising at several points.
Kara largely rests on Dhanush’s performance. He delivers an emotionally engaging portrayal, even though the character lacks depth.

Mamitha Baiju plays a determined role, but her character loses strength as the film progresses. Talented actors like Suraj Venjaramoodu, Karunaas, and Jayaram are underutilized, given a limited scope despite their capabilities.
Kara is quite different from director Vignesh Raja’s Por Thozhil, and expectations should be set accordingly. With a strong ensemble and a few engaging moments, this Dhanush starrer remains a watchable film that can be enjoyed in theaters this week.
