Beginning with the first frame, there is a distinct setup to Kinaru. The film begins with four kids, Pethappa, Mani, Saibol, and Salidappa, playing in a well. They are lost in the joy of the moment, yet the background score and the slow, deliberate pacing hint at something ominous. Right on cue, the kids are beaten for using the well. At first, it’s quite jarring that the scene is treated lightly, which is followed by an energetic song. It makes us wonder whether the director is downplaying the seriousness of the situation. But as similar sequences repeat, we begin to understand that this lightness reflects how such incidents have become an everyday reality for the children. This also becomes the driving factor for the kids to dig up a well of their own.
They go to work for the landlord, sell their cycles, and even attempt to steal a few things. Yet each time they fail, they return with a plan that is more ridiculous yet more determined than before. This lightness is what makes Kinaru quite relatable and reminds us of the sweetness of our dreams. What remains our favourite, though, are the scenes between Pethappa and his grandmother; it’s quite reminiscent of the tender warmth of the old man and the young kid in KD ennum Karupudurai.
Visually, too, the film is a delight. Cinematographer Gautham Venkatesh bathes the frames in lush greens, keeping the screen vibrant even during serious moments, giving the film a bright, chirpy feel. The songs by Bhuvanesh Selvasen add to the beauty of the film. And scattered throughout are lovely storytelling details—like how every time someone glimpses their reflection in the well’s water, a small sense of happiness and joy spreads across their face. It’s in these little details that Kinaru becomes the well of happiness.
