Directed by Wes Ball, 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes'opens with a clear shift away from the iconic figure of Caesar, confirming that this beloved character's story is definitively concluded. The film focuses on Noa (Owen Teague), a young chimpanzee who survives a brutal attack on his village. His quest for answers and revenge is the heart of the plot, and his journey reveals more about his species' complicated relationship with humans and the machinations of the despotic Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand). Along the way, Noa encounters Mae (Freya Allan), a human whose role is crucial yet not fully explored, and Raka (Peter Macon), an orangutan who represents the lost values of Caesar's original vision of harmony between apes and humans.

Although the story and characters in this new instalment don't achieve the same intensity as the previous trilogy, the film sets the stage for an intriguing journey, providing a glimpse into a future that holds potential for more engaging storytelling. The primary characters are mostly digital apes, convincingly portrayed through the remarkable work of visual effects artists and motion-capture performances. They are instilled with realism through their physical movements, facial expressions, and emotions. This technical marvel ensures that the apes are believable in their pursuit of building communities, whether they align with good intentions or more nefarious plans.
Visually, it is a spectacle portraying a desolate world overgrown and reclaimed by nature. Abandoned skyscrapers, lush scenery, and Proximus' stronghold are all rendered with exquisite detail. However, the film occasionally lingers too long on these landscapes, resulting in pacing issues that leave viewers yearning for more narrative depth. The foreshadowing and hints at future storylines suggest that this instalment may serve as a stepping stone for future films, albeit at the cost of leaving some storylines unresolved.

Despite the film's narrative shortcomings, it is an entertaining adventure that engages viewers. The performances, particularly by Teague and Durand, are commendable, and the visual effects set new benchmarks for the franchise. While it may not linger in the memory as the preceding trilogy did, 'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' is a worthy addition, offering a mix of action, drama, and visual wonder.

This is how Proximius, who has an imprisoned, resigned human (Macy) regaling him with Roman history, has imagined himself as the new Caesar. And has got himself a captive audience, who repeats after him every morning as he stands on a podium: “What a wonderful day!”

Plus the film is unceasingly grim, with no moments of levity to make us pine for what is at stake. Neither is a cavernous vault holding humanity’s secrets and the key to its re-emergence at the top of the pyramid, from the primitive, speech-less form it has receded into, the most attractive of battlegrounds.



It had been a while since we witnessed Ceaser’s death in the Planet of the Apes franchise. While it looked like it will be a while before we return to Ape ruled planet, Wes Ball decided to not only return to the Ape world but also branch out into a whole new territory with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Set 300 years after Ceaser’s (Andy Serkis) death, the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes puts the spotlight on Noa, a young chimpanzee hunter played Owen Teague, and his human friend, Mae / Nova (played by Freya Allan).

The film kicks off with fans of the franchise meeting Noa and his friends, hunting for Eagle eggs. There is no human in sight. However, as they return to their village, they sense that threat lingers in the dark forest. Noa appeared to have spotted a girl in the woods. While he wrapped his head around the new discovery, he comes across a rogue clan of apes who have twisted Caesar’s teachings under the leadership of Proximus Caesar. They burn down Noa’s village and kill his father. They also capture the survivors of his clan, including Noa’s mother and friends.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes pushes the Planet of the Apes universe into a new direction. However, I wish director Wes Ball had picked a story-heavy route. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes establishes itself as a standalone film which doesn’t depend heavily on the past of the franchise — Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014), and War for the Planet of the Apes (2017). This strategy will not only help bring back the OG fans of the franchise but also lure those who have not seen the past films.

However, given the rich storylines seen in the past films, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes falls short on offering an interesting, out-of-the-box story. The first half of the film takes longer than usual to establish its roots. The slow pace does affect the attention span. However, in the second half, the film picks up pace and it is during the climax that the film’s agenda is established. It is also the time that viewers realise that Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is more than just a sequel to the threequel featuring Andy Serkis.

The slow pace is compensated by great visuals. Cinematographer Gyula Pados, known for his work in Predators (2010), Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials (2015), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) and its 2019 sequel, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023), has beautifully shot the film. One of the scenes that stood out for me appears in the first half of the film, when Noa, Mae and Raka face the rogue clan. Seemingly a difficult shot, the scene truly gets you involved in the film. The music by John Paesano helps elevate scenes in many places.

As for the actors, Owen Teague shines as Noa. The actor imbibes the characteristics of apes and nails the performance. So much so that he outshines Freya Allan as well. She is weak owing to the lack of depth in her character. While the film attempts to build a mystery around her character, it doesn’t land properly.

Bottomline: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes makes a great attempt to detach from its past and establish a new story but it doesn’t fully land.

The story of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes continues years after Caesar's death. The apes have split into numerous clans. Noa (Owen Teague) is part of the Eagle Clan. Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand) is the leader of a rogue clan, who twists Caesar's teachings. Caesar was never against humans but Proximus Caesar asks all the apes to never trust humans, and Noa happens to overhear it.

In a series of events, Proximus Caesar burns down Noa's village and captures a number of apes from the Eagle Clan. Noa, after gaining consciousness, sets out to search for other apes from his clan. He meets Raka, who introduces him to the actual teachings of Caesar. He also tells Noa that Caesar was actually brought up by a human. While Noa is not entirely convinced, an incident changes his views about the humans, for the better. Noa, along with Raka and a human, Mae (Freya Allan), goes about finding Proximus' clan. The story that follows, shows how Noa re-establishes the Eagle Clan. Also, we know more about the truths and agendas of humans.

All the actors who essay the role of the apes in the film do a commendable job, be it Owen Teague, Kevin Durand or Peter Macon. Motion capture is seamless. Freya Allan as Mae does very well in her interesting role.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes is visually stunning, has great world building and ends on a high. Those who love Planet Of The Apes films, should also like Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes. 

In the beginning of Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes, we are informed about humans and apes and this humongous yet heartfelt creature called Ceaser that’s the ultimate embodiment of sacrifice. And this is before the first scene. And this time, the coming-of-age conflict is about another chimpanzee called Noa and his struggles and sacrifices that are woven into the story. This is the tenth film in the overall franchise but unlike the other ones, this one unfolds leisurely before going all bonkers.

The sheer madness of the franchise isn’t over just as yet as the filmmaker confirmed this would unfold as a trilogy. The apes have gone through a lot through this immersive and imaginative world the whole team has crafted for entertainment and euphoria, and it feels they, by now, revel in putting these creatures into trouble. But it’s also crucial to see the man-animal conflict as Shankar himself said in his 2018 movie 2.0 that the world is not only for humans. Also, humans too have evolved from apes.
