The story is damn good and nicely adds to this series. Jeff Nathanson's screenplay is gripping and is peppered with entertaining and dramatic scenes. The dialogues are lovely, especially the philosophical ones.

Barry Jenkins' direction is supreme. Making MUFASA: THE LION RISK is a risk as THE LION KING has a huge fan base across audiences of all groups and that too across the world. Trying to add to its storyline and making a prequel is a gamble that could have backfired, as it happened with JOKER recently. Thankfully, the risk pays off here. The first thing that appeals to the viewers is its grandeur. The film is mounted on a huge scale and the manner in which these animals are depicted is sure to amaze viewers, especially the children. Moreover, it has a great story to tell. There's also consistency in characterization - Mufasa has been depicted in a certain way in the earlier part and in this flick, those traits are very much seen. In fact, viewers get to see how he learned these skills. There's also a nice parallel drawn with certain happenings in THE LION KING. A few scenes that are memorable are Mufasa's separation, Mufasa and Taka's race, Mufasa advising Taka how to woo Sarabi (Tiffany Boone), the elephant stampede, etc.

On the flipside, Timon and Pumbaa this time fail to raise laughs. In fact, it seems like they are trying too hard. The final flight is a bit underwhelming. Thirdly, the viewers will get slightly confused in places because Taka and Mufasa look a bit similar, especially in wide shots. Lastly, the timing of the release in India can prove to be a slight problem.
Speaking of voiceovers, Aaron Pierre’s work is praiseworthy as he tries to get into the shoes of James Earl Jones, the original voice of Mufasa in THE LION KING and the 1994 animation film. But he manages to do very well and viewers won’t have complaints. Kelvin Harrison Jr is the next best followed by Tiffany Boone and Thandiwe Newton. Mads Mikkelsen is apt for the voice of the antagonist. John Kani is entertaining while Blue Ivy Carter is adorable. Lennie James, Donald Glover and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter do well. Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen try their best to raise laughs but are let down by the script. Preston Nyman (Zasu) is funnier.
On the whole, MUFASA: THE LION KING is a grand visual entertainer, which deserves a watch in cinemas thanks to its big-screen appeal, stunning VFX and compelling storytelling. At the box office, it has the potential to be a super-hit like its predecessor but it will face some heat from PUSHPA 2 – THE RULE.

The 1994 animated classic, The Lion King, remains a cherished favourite for its iconic storytelling, unforgettable music, and stellar voice performances. After the live-action remake in 2019, director Barry Jenkins and writer Jeff Nathanson now bring a visually stunning prequel that explores Mufasa’s origin story, his journey to becoming the king of the Pride Lands, and his tumultuous relationship with Simba’s evil uncle, Scar (voiced previously by Jeremy Irons).
The film’s photorealistic CGI is nothing short of breathtaking, capturing emotive expressions and intricate details that deliver awe-inspiring, heartwarming, and nail-biting moments. While Mufasa’s backstory takes centre stage, the narrative also delves into the enigmatic Scar, shedding light on the events that earned him his curious nickname and solidifying his role as a menacing figure.
Visually, Mufasa: The Lion King is a masterpiece. The film dazzles with its striking landscapes, from intense battles between Mufasa’s pride and white lions to avalanches. Particularly captivating is Milele, a dreamlike world crafted to enchant young cubs that’s a visual marvel.
The untold story of how animosity brewed between Mufasa and Taka (later known as Scar) adds intrigue and surprises with the fact that the two were once friends. However, Taka’s transformation into Scar lacks the depth needed to make the rivalry truly compelling, as the real reason feels contrived.
Themes of brotherhood, leadership, legacy, and unity run throughout the film, but the storytelling struggles to match the grandeur of its visuals. Despite its ambition, the script doesn’t achieve the narrative strength of the original, often feeling contrived. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s score, while worthy, also falls short of the magic of Elton John and Tim Rice’s original compositions, such as Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata, and Can You Feel the Love Tonight.
Voice acting remains a standout feature. Aaron Pierre delivers a nuanced portrayal of Mufasa, balancing courage with humility. Kelvin Harrison Jr. excels as Taka/Scar, capturing the character’s evolution from insecure sibling to bitter antagonist. Mads Mikkelsen shines as Kiros, the commanding leader of the Outsiders, while Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen return as Timon and Pumbaa, injecting humour with their delightful chemistry.
Mufasa: The Lion King is a visual treat that immerses audiences in a beautifully rendered world. Its stunning CGI, aesthetic appeal, and engaging performances captivate, and make for an experience worth having on the big screen.

Krishiv: Dad, wasn't Mufasa: The Lion King so cool? Like, I didn't think it would be THAT good, but it was amazing!

Dad: It really was. I loved how they told the story of Mufasa's journey. It was good, right? What did you like the most?

Krishiv: Umm...everything? Mostly when Mufasa was a cub, and he got separated from his family which was sad. He still tried to be brave and listened to what his mummy and daddy said. It was kind of like Simba in the other Lion King.

Dad: Unlike you, who doesn't listen to his mumma or daddy.

Krishiv: I do. Okay, I agree. I don’t but that's only some times (wicked laugh).
Dad: They even showed that even great leaders start small and face challenges. Remember how Mufasa had to figure out what it meant to be a king?

Krishiv: Yeah! And Rafiki kept saying all those funny things, like, 'The stars tell us more than we know.' What did that mean?

Dad: I think he was teaching Mufasa to look beyond what's right in front of him. To trust his instincts and listen to the wisdom of others.

Krishiv: Ohhh, like when he saved the animals during that big storm! That part was CRAZY! I thought he was going to get hurt, but nope! He was like, 'ROARRR,' and all the animals listened!

Dad: Mufasa really showed courage there. And the animation in that scene, wow! The colours, the sound of the rain it felt so real.

Krishiv: I love all the songs! The music was like like, DUN DUN DUN! I couldn't sit still in my seat when they started singing. I felt like dancing along with all the animals.

I liked the one where Mufasa and Scar were playing together before they started fighting.

Dad: That was a great song. It made you feel happy at first, but then it got a little sad when Scar started feeling jealous.

Krishiv: Why was Scar so mean?

Dad: I think Scar was upset because he wanted to be special too, but he didn’t understand that being kind and working together is what makes you great.

Krishiv: Yeah, Mufasa tried to help him but Scar didn't want to listen.

Dad: That's right. And that's another lesson: jealousy can make people do bad things. But Mufasa showed us how important it is to stay kind and brave. I feel it also makes a great story. Even the villains have their reasons, and it shows us what happens when we let anger or jealousy win.

Krishiv: So do you think Mufasa was always the best king ever?

Dad: I think he became the best king because he learned from his mistakes and listened to the people around him. That's what being a good leader is about.

Krishiv: I want to be like Mufasa when I grow up! Strong, brave, and kind.

Dad: You already are, buddy. And just like Mufasa, you'll grow into it one step at a time.

Krishiv: This was the best day ever. Thanks for taking me, Dad. I would tell all my friends to go and watch the movie.

Dad: How would you rate the movie?

Krishiv: I don't want to do a boring '4 out of 5 stars'. Instead, I'll rate it 10 out of 10 roaring lions! Or maybe two scoops of my favourite chocolate ice cream with extra sprinkles because it was that sweet!


The Lion King has been a pivotal part of my childhood. Be it summer or winter break, the children of the family would come together to watch Scar betray his brother Mufasa and play witness to Simba’s rise. Watching Mufasa: The Lion King, I found myself feeling a gentle mix of nostalgia and awe. Director Barry Jenkins revisits the iconic story but from the newer lens. We meet Mufasa yet again, but this time, Barry takes us through the events that happen before Jon Favreau’s The Lion King. The film feels fresh but does it hold the essence of 1994’s The Lion King? Let’s find out.

Mufasa: The Lion King revolves around the backstory of Mufasa and Taka. Mufasa is separated from his pride after a massive flood hits his area. He is washed away in the river and lands up at the river banks situated close to Taka’s pride. While he befriends Taka and his mother, Eshe, he struggles to impress Obasi, Taka’s father. He grows up to hone skills that makes him a good leader.
The pride is then attacked by Kiros, the leader of a pride of white lions who are dubbed as the Outsiders. Obasi and Eshe try to save the pride while they chase Mufasa and Taka away to Milele, a mystical land far, far away. Unfortunately for the duo, the white lions catch up and they find a way through the canyons and the mountains. On the way, they come across Sarabi, Zazu and Rafiki. Their adventure takes a few twists and turns in the span of 1 hour 58 minutes film.

The biggest draw about Mufasa: The Lion King is its original storytelling. Instead of returning to the cliff again, director Barry Jenkins and writer Jeff Nathanson opt to show how the iconic cliff came into being. This is a great move by the duo and Disney, considering the original is a cult. This also justifies the need to revisit the story.
Another factor that works brilliantly for Mufasa: The Lion King is the animation. Dare I say, it is much better than The Lion King (2019). Visually, Mufasa never lets you take your eyes off the screen. Barry and his team of animators have paid utmost attention to the smallest of details, making it a flawless visual experience. Mufasa also gets good marks on the original soundtrack. I personally enjoyed the songs “I Always Wanted a Brother" and “Bye Bye". The other songs in the album take a little longer to grow on you.

On the performance front, although Aaron Pierre’s Mufasa is the heart of the film, it is Kelvin Harrison Jr’s Taka that stands out time and again. Blame it on the writing but Taka’s arc and Kelvin’s voice to it emerge as a stronger performer. John Kani as Rafiki is also a show-stealor in a few scenes. However, it is Mads Mikkelsen who roars the loudest in this film. Voicing the magnificent Kiros, Mads holds your attention and how! I wish there was a few more scenes of him with Mufasa to truly establish the chaos he was causing.
Speaking of more, Mufasa: The Lion King also needed a little more emotion. The film, owing to its linear storytelling, leans towards narrating the story than investing in the emotions behind each character. The Lion King stood out because of the attention to the characters’ vulnerability. Unfortunately, Mufasa lacks that essence. It makes you invested in each character’s back story but that’s about it. There are moments when you feel bad for Taka but that’s about it. The film needed a dash of emotions to truly round it up well and an anchor that you can root for until the end.
Due to this, Mufasa: The Lion King ends up becoming a one-time-watch experience and just another film in Disney’s sea of live-animated/action films.

Bottom line: Mufasa The Lion King is a visual treat but could fall short for those who love the OG-1994 version. Nevertheless, I’d still suggest that you give it a watch and pick a good screen to truly embrace the experience.

I've always been a huge admirer of #TheLionKing, and the latest installment, #MufasaTheLionKing - a prequel to the iconic original - lives up to expectations for the most part.

The photorealistic animation is absolutely stunning and the impactful voiceovers by #ShahRukhKhan [as #Mufasa], #AryanKhan [as #Simba] and #AbramKhan [as cub #Mufasa] elevate the experience to another level.

On the flip side, the pacing dips intermittently, while the songs contribute precious little to the goings-on.

The visuals of Mufasa: The Lion King are unparalleled, presenting some of the most breathtaking scenes one may have ever seen in live action. The cinematography, combined with innovative use of light and color, creates a vivid, immersive world that is very captivating. The voice acting is another highlight; each character is brought to life with nuance and emotion. The songs, integral to the Lion King legacy, are both soulful and uplifting, consequently enhancing the storytelling. The narrative feels organic and necessary. It seamlessly fits into the established lore of the Lion King universe.
Mufasa: The Lion King successfully extends the beloved franchise of The Lion King with its fun and frolic nature, and its visual splendor. While it might not escape some of the genre's clichés and lacks the suspense of an unknown outcome, it compensates with its heart, music, and the sheer quality of its voice acting. Finally, we can say that Mufasa: The Lion King is a beautiful blend of nostalgia, beauty and innocence.

The 1994 animated classical The Lion King, which was remade in 2019 with the same by using photorealistic animation, enjoys cult status as it takes cinegoers down memory lane with its nostalgic and fantasy-tical storytelling. While the story of Simba is well-known, the plot of Mufasa (Simba’s father) is unexplored. That’s why right from the inception of this project, I was curious to know the backstory of this character, who is remembered by his tribe as one of the greatest leaders. So, does it live up to the expectations and hype? Let’s find out…
The plot starts with Simba (Donald Glover) the king of Pride Lands and his daughter Kiara talking as he is on his to get back her queen Nala (Beyoncé Knowles-Carter), who is pregnant with his second child. Simba keeps Kiara with Timon (Billy Eichner) and Pumbaa (Seth Rogen) and tells them look after her but without telling her their weird stories.

While Timon and Pumbaa fail to entertain Kiara as she misses her parents, Rafiki (John Kani) arrives and narrates the origin of her family’s legacy and his grandfather Mufasa.

A playful and young cub Mufasa (Braelyn and Brielle Rankins) is loved by everyone along with his parents Masego (Keith David) and Afia (Anika Noni Rose). Afia always talks about Milele, a place beyond the horizon, which is beautiful and completes the circle of life.
One day, due to floods in his kingdom, Mufasa gets separated from his parents and through the force of the river he lands in another kingdom, where he meets Taka (cub’s voice Theo Somolu), who saves him from a crocodile. While Taka’s mother Eshe (Thandiwe Newton) shows affection towards Mufasa, his mate and king of pride Obasi (Lennie James) calls him an outsider and stray and refuses to include him in his pride.

However, he soon joins Eshe and learns hunting and other skills. As they grow up, the bond becomes super strong between Mufasa and Taka. However, one day Kiros’ (the formidable leader of a pride of white lions known as outsiders) army tries to attack Nala. While Taka gets scared and runs from there, Mufasa fights them bravely killing Kiros’ son Shaaju.
As Eshe and Obasi know that Kiros and his army will come to seek Shaaju’s revenge, they tell Mufasa and Taka to run and start their new life. In this adventurous journey, we see the self-discovery of Mufasa from no one to a great king. But wait! How, is Mufasa and Taka’s bond affected and the latter turns his biggest enemy as Scar? Well, for that you have to watch Mufasa: The Lion King on the big screen.

The plot of Mufasa looks like a typical Bollywood plot from the 80s and 90s. However, the astounding visuals give you an immersive experience.
For me, the biggest letdown of the film is that it just brushes through the characters without exploring the emotional dynamics and depth. Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa is enjoyable but nowhere close to The Lion King. The narrative is uniform without any high points, which somewhat makes it a draggy affair.

Talking about the voiceovers, every actor has done their part to the T but for me, the show stealer was Mads Mikkelsen with his impactful and vicious voice of villain Kiros.

On the whole, Mufasa is a one-time watch only if you don’t compare it with its sequel.
