“Saappattu” Raman, an orphan from the village of Poongudi, is saved from drowning by Devaki, the educated sister of wealthy landlord Rajarathnam, and becomes infatuated with her. Humiliated when he asks to marry her, Raman vows to become rich and leaves for the city, eventually rising to stardom in cinema. Years later his life entwines again with Devaki when she entrusts her young daughter to him before going to prison, and Raman raises the girl as his own. A later act of violence forces him to face the cost of his choices and the distance between the simple boy he was and the man he has become.
