Punjabi cinema’s enduring love affair with weddings finds a spirited celebration in Sarbala Ji, a multi-starrer that blends boisterous humour, gentle nostalgia, and cultural commentary in a pre-Partition setting. Directed by Mandeep Kumar, the film is part madcap comedy, part romantic misadventure—with enough heart to carry its occasional stumbles.
At the center are cousins Sucha Singh (Gippy Grewal) and Gajjan Singh (Ammy Virk), as different as lassi and chai. Sucha thrives on loud celebrations and flirty encounters, while Gajjan prefers crochet over commitment. But fate has other plans: a flirtation gone wrong prompts Sucha to swear off marriage, while the shy Gajjan finds himself smitten by the fearless, free-spirited Pyaaro (Nimrat Khaira), a woman who turns every domestic stereotype on its head.
The film’s narrative takes a sharp turn when Gajjan’s wedding procession is hijacked by a gang of bandits led by the legendary Guggu Gill. What could have been pure peril transforms into comic gold, particularly in sequences where the dacoits attempt to toughen up their timid captive. Gajjan learning to shoot amid gruff laughter and misguided encouragement is one of the film’s most delightfully absurd moments.
While the first half is tight, witty, and full of energy—thanks in part to Inderjit Moga’s sharp dialogues—the second half meanders. The pacing slackens and an out-of-place showdown between the dacoits and their enemies feels less like organic storytelling and more like a nostalgic nod to 90s dacoit films. These tonal shifts slightly blur the film’s identity, leaving viewers unsure whether to expect satire, spoof, or sincere drama.
Performances, however, elevate the material. Nimrat Khaira is the film’s biggest surprise—radiant, bold, and hilarious, she steals every scene she's in. Ammy Virk handles Gajjan’s arc with grace, transitioning effortlessly from awkward romantic to accidental hero. Gippy Grewal plays the over-the-top Sucha with his signature ease, injecting flamboyant charm into every frame. Sargun Mehta’s Rajjo, though underutilized, strikes a graceful balance between elegance and subtle humour. Guggu Gill, BN Sharma, and the ensemble cast deliver strong supporting turns that bolster the narrative.
Visually, the film is rooted in nostalgia. From earthy Punjabi vistas to vibrant traditional attire, every frame feels lovingly crafted. The soundtrack—especially “Zimmewari”, “Jatta Ve”, and “Bhul Janeya”—blends emotion and rhythm, enhancing both mood and plot.
Despite its imperfections, Sarbala Ji stands out as a refreshing crowd-pleaser. It’s not flawless—some jokes linger too long, and the climax feels slightly overcooked—but it succeeds in offering a heartwarming, laughter-filled ride steeped in culture and camaraderie.
Not without bumps, but Sarbala Ji is an engaging blend of humour, heart, and heritage—carried by standout performances and genuine charm.

Punjabis are perhaps most associated with their loud, fun weddings and the multi-starrer featuring Gippy Grewal, Sargun Mehta, Ammy Virk, Nimrat Khaira, Sarbala Ji (2025), makes this the perfect setting for a complete entertainer. Directed by Mandeep Kumar, the film weaves together comedy, drama and romance in a pre-Partition setting.

Cousins Sucha Singh (Gippy Grewal) and Gajjan Singh (Ammy Virk) are like chalk and cheese. Sucha Singh is the life of every wedding while Gajjan shies away from marriage, being more interested in embroidery stitches and crochet. When flirtation with Rajjo (Sargun Mehta) leads Sucha to a pronouncement that he is never to marry, he is utterly dismayed. Meanwhile, Gajjan is all set to marry Pyaaro (Nimrat Khaira) who is far from being the docile, embroidery-loving woman that he dreams of. Content with working at the farm, and shunning housework, Pyaaro is completely smitten and transformed in love, eager to marry her beau. However, there are few twists and turns to be navigated.
The film is set at a time when men from the groom’s family would sometimes have to travel for days to the bride’s home. En route to the wedding, Gajjan Singh’s party is intercepted by bandits led by Guggu Gill, who kidnaps Gajjan. Aside from the passing moments of terror unleashed by the dacoits, the comedy ensues even with the supposedly menacing men. A hilarious scene is when the dacoits decide that Gajjan is feeble-hearted and needs to be emboldened. They start training him and Gajjan is taught how to shoot.
Nimrat Khaira steals the show with her spirited performance and infectious verve. Her perfect comic timing paired with zingy dialogues is one of the highlights of the film. Ammy Virk moves seamlessly between comedy and action, channeling his impressive persona in Maurh (2023), seen in the dacoit scenes. Sargun Mehta and Gippy Grewal too give good performances that keep the momentum going. Stellar performances by Guggu Gill, BN Sharma, along with the rest of the supporting cast are commendable.

The foot-tapping title track is complemented by several rhythmic songs that add to the atmosphere for the film. “Bhul Janeya” is a beautiful melody sung by Danny and composed by Tasho; Gurlez Akhtar’s earthy voice shines in the folk-inspired “Jatta Ve”; and Ammy Virk and Nimrat Khaira infuse vitality into the melodic number “Zimmewari”. “Garari” is passable, marking a shift from the rest of the tracks as a chest-thumping, forceful song in line with the action drama that unfolds.
It is refreshing to see multi-starrers in Punjabi cinema, with star power clearly reigning supreme in the excitement around this film. This feel-good comedy is sure to bring crowds to the theatres.

Best remembered for her performance in her television debut 12/24 Karol Bagh, Sargun Mehta is an Indian television and movie actor, and presenter. She received acclaim for her work in Colors` drama series Phulwa. Married to fellow television actor Ravi Dubey, the couple participated in the dance reality show Nach Baliye in its fifth season. Making her movie debut, Sargun was seen in the Punjabi movie Angrej in 2015, which went on to become the second-highest grossing Punjabi film of the year. She also went on to win the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Actress in 2016. Her other projects include Love Punjab (2017), Jindua (2017), Qismat (2018), Chandigarh Amritsar Chandigarh (2019) and Surkhi Bindi (2019).

Gippy Grewal is a popular Punjabi actor, singer, songwriter and film director. After establishing himself as one of the biggest Punjabi singers, Gippy made his acting debut in 2010 with the movie Mel Karade Rabba. Some of his most popular Punjabi movies include Jinhe Mera Dil Luteya, Carry On Jatta, Singh Is Kaur, Lucky Di Unlucky Story, Bhaji In Problem and Jatt James Bond.
