After being falsely implicated in a serious crime, a man is imprisoned within a rigid and violent system. Inside the prison, he navigates power hierarchies, psychological manipulation, and survival tactics while searching for a way to expose the truth. The narrative examines incarceration as a space where justice, identity, and endurance are constantly tested.

Prison dramas live or die on whether they make you care about the people trapped inside them. Sirai manages this partly through Vikram Prabhu's restrained performance and partly through its focus on procedural realism over melodrama, though the latter still sneaks in more than necessary. Set between 1997 and 2002, the film follows Constable Kathiravan (Vikram Prabhu) as he escorts prisoner Abdul (LK Akshay Kumar) from Vellore jail to Sivagangai court. The journey becomes the canvas for exploring how the system grinds people down through indifference and prejudice.
What works best here is the understatement. Police procedurals for that era get depicted without fanfare: convict escorts, overcrowded court hearings where cases are essentially pre-decided tick marks, officers carrying their own biases into every interaction. These aren't new observations, but director Suresh Rajakumari presents them with enough honesty that they register. Vikram Prabhu anchors this with subtle work, conveying internal conflict without telegraphing every emotion. His character operates on a simple philosophy: speak up or get run over. At pivotal moments, that quiet courage lifts wavering officers around him, pulling them toward doing the right thing even when it's risky.
The flashbacks revealing Abdul's backstory are where things stumble. The setup feels overly familiar: a Muslim family in a predominantly Hindu village, religious prejudice erupting into violence, an abusive alcoholic antagonist. Abdul's lover comes from a household where her brother-in-law terrorizes everyone, and the conflicts that push the plot forward rely heavily on convenient timing. When Abdul's girlfriend gets caught by her drunk brother-in-law while receiving cash and jewels from her sister to elope, you can't help but roll your eyes at the ease of it all. The scuffle between her father, Abdul, and his mother escalates in predictably tragic fashion, landing as another familiar beat.
The film tugs hard at heartstrings, sometimes sacrificing character depth for emotional manipulation. You sense the story wants you to feel things more than it wants to develop these people beyond their narrative functions. LK Akshay Kumar does what he can with Abdul, but the character remains somewhat flat despite good intentions.
Still, these missteps are outweighed by Vikram Prabhu's performance and the film's procedural honesty.

Actor Vikram Prabhu’s choice of scripts has been impressive in the recent past. His upcoming venture, Sirai, marks his second collaboration with writer Tamizh (also an actor) after their critically acclaimed Taanakkaran. Sirai, like Taanakkaran, casts Vikram Prabhu's protagonist as a police officer, but from the district armed reserve wing.

Sirai begins with a chilling sequence featuring Kathiravan (Vikram Prabhu), who is on escort duty of an accused, and gets ambushed inside a bus. As the prisoner tries to escape, he takes aim and shoots the man in public. Kathiravan defends his action during the enquiry, and in his speech, he also explains how, despite being a police officer, he suffers because of the system and lays bare the injustices against officers like him.
Kathiravan is tasked with another escort duty where he has to take a prisoner named Abdul (LK Akshay Kumar) from Vellore prison to the Sivagangai court for a hearing. Abdul makes several attempts to escape. The journey to the court reveals what crime Abdul committed, what his motive was, his background and more. Sirai explores the dynamics of a police officer who is stuck between performing his duty and exercising his humanity.
But, Sirai is not just about the police officer and the struggles he faces at work. When the story shifts its focus towards Abdul, it peels the layers to expose how the police system and the law lag in dealing with cases and how it treats minorities. Abdul, with all his innocence, has to bear the brunt of his actions, apart from facing mistreatment because of his name and religion.

In a striking scene in Sirai, a police officer escorting Abdul is asked why his gun is loaded and, without hesitation, he says that the accused is a Muslim. The senior officer stresses him down and says he’s a Muslim as well, and asks if he’d brand him as well. He doesn’t give sermons, but makes him realise the conditioning and his treatment of minorities.

Abdul’s innocence strikes the most, as he doesn’t whitewash his actions. Instead, he realises the gravity of his action and asks for a chance to reform himself. Kathiravan, who knows the nooks and crannies of the system, helps him. But it isn’t as easy as it seems, considering the giants they take on.

Sirai doesn’t let you relax for a moment. Having watched several procedural dramas with sad endings, it tricks your mind into believing that something untoward will happen to the protagonists. But Sirai surprises you with a hopeful ending, one that is rooted in realism and lets you believe in hopeful stories. That is the biggest success of writer Tamizh and director Suresh’s work.
Abdul’s backstory with Kalaiyarasi (Anishma Anilkumar) is written with heightened sensitivity. Abdul, navigating the challenges of an interfaith relationship, relies on Kalaiyarasi for emotional stability as the couple strives to validate their love. Kalaiyarasi’s arc shows her as someone shaped by patriarchy and toxic parenting, forces which confine her to a subservient role, challenging her sense of self and agency.

Vikram Prabhu’s restrained performance is perfect for a serious film with a well-intentioned climax. The film belongs to debutant LK Akshay Kumar as much as it does to Vikram Prabhu. The debutant brings Abdul alive with innocence in his voice. Anishma is a ray of hope in the film, and his smile lights up the frame.

Cinematographer Madhesh Manickam’s handheld shots and Justin Prabhakaran’s background music make Sirai a brilliant portrayal of honest men fighting the system that suppresses them.

Sirai is both searing and hopeful, and a fitting end to 2025.
