James Gunn's story is fresh and yet has the trademark stamp of Superman. James Gunn's screenplay is gripping and fast-paced. The dialogues are well-worded and sharp.

James Gunn's direction is exemplary. He doesn't waste time at all in introducing Superman and in a rare instance, even the base of the conflict is not explained. A unique write-up in the beginning sums it up and once that fades away, the narrative progresses ahead. What also strikes is that this is a very today's film. Hence, it is in sync with the geopolitical tensions of the present age and also touches upon the role of social media. The beginning is fine but what ups the film is the interview between Lois and Superman. The film gets even better once Superman is imprisoned. The tension levels in the pocket universe track are raised significantly. The climax is nail-biting and applause-worthy.

On the flipside, not having a conventional intro is a well-intentioned idea. Yet, it takes a while to settle into the experience since the audience is not used to it. Secondly, this is not exactly a family-friendly fare as the violence is a bit more disturbing than the other superhero flicks. The much-hyped mid-credit and post-credit scenes are random and will disappoint viewers. Lastly, the buzz in India is limited.
David Corenswet makes a risky move by essaying a character which has been played by Henry Cavill beautifully. However, David brings his own touch and does full justice. Rachel Brosnahan has a crucial part and she is exceptional. Nicholas Hoult is too good as the villain. The antagonist here is quite powerful and that adds to the entertainment quotient. Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific) is the surprise of the film. He is like the other main hero of the film. Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Oslen) leaves a tremendous mark while Sara Sampaio (Eve) and María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer) make their presence felt. Anthony Carrigan (Rex/Metamorpho). Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern) and Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl) do well but get limited scope. Pruitt Taylor Vince (Jonathan Kent), Neva Howell (Martha Kent) and Wendell Pierce (Perry; editor of The Daily Planet) are fair. Zlatko Burić is over the top but it works for his character.
On the whole, SUPERMAN marks an impressive start to the new DC Universe. With its fast-paced narrative, standout performances and edge-of-the-seat moments, it delivers solid entertainment and ensures audiences get their money’s worth. At the box office, it has the potential to surprise and emerge as the third consecutive Hollywood hit, following F1: THE MOVIE and JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH.



Over the years, the superhero universe has become increasingly grim, and you can almost sense James Gunn’s annoyance with this trajectory. He gets Superman’s classic red trunks back for a reason - a reset. His hero radiates optimism, which explains why the caped saviour never gives up, even though he spends most of the movie getting beaten to a pulp. Gunn’s Superman is younger—aware of his power but still discovering his purpose. He turns a new page by stripping the character of its modern trappings and reuniting it with its roots -- the comics. Though an alien from Krypton, Superman is a righteous superhero, an ultimate saviour, who must bear the weight of humanity’s survival.
When Gunn, also the head of DC Studios, said he didn’t want his Superman to wear a suit that looks like a ‘wet T-shirt with a bunch of fake muscles’, (referring to Zack Snyder’s Superman featuring Henry Cavill), it wasn’t just to ignite a debate. His aversion to its dark and edgy adaptation was evident. He was clear about taking the character back to its original form. Does this transition work? The outcome is refreshingly positive and enjoyable but also one-dimensional. It meanders on the edge of something greater but falls short of its peak.
At 2 hours, 10 minutes, a relatively short duration for a film that brings Superman’s legacy to a newer audience, Gunn keeps things light and easy, mostly humurous. Since this is not an origin story (a risky move), he gives the film a day in the life of Superman treatment over pitching it as en epic clash of opposing moral sensibilities. Krypto the Superdog is a welcome inclusion. The Justice Gang led by Green Cantern (Nathan Fillion) lends the film some of its funniest moments. The director taking a dig at paid social media trolls that diss Superman and call him, ‘Supershit’, is clever, too. You wish there were more scenes between David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan (Superman’s love interest and journalist Lois Lane) because their push and pull dynamic and chemistry is off the charts. There is also an anti-war narrative which is deeply relevant.
In a world that’s already ravaged by unrest, Gunn wants his film to radiate hope. However, his persistent need to keep things playful and lighthearted, deprives the film of its tipping point. The abrupt editing leads to the story being rushed, not allowing you to emotionally invest in the characters or their actions enough. The tone of the film feels ambiguous as well. The entertainment and clean humour take precedence over conflict be it emotional or political. You wish the confrontation between Louis Lane and Clark Kent or Superman and Lex Luthor wasn’t cut short to focus on action scenes. While witnessing the action in Imax is spectacular, and turns out to be the film’s key asset, the emotional turmoil needed steady exposure. The fleeting glimpses of tension keep you engaged but barely scratch the surface.
Superman trusts everyone and believes no one is capable of being evil. Luthor sees him as a patronizing prick, and you don’t blame him. David Corenswet portrays this idealism that borders on naivete perfectly. He plays a grounded, beatable hero who’s still figuring out his goal in life. Comparison with Cavill is uncalled for because hypothetically speaking, if Zack Snyder’s Man of steel was 40, James Gunn’s Superman is in his mid-20’s and Corenswet exudes the raw nobility and cocky exuberance of youth well. He shuttles well between a flirtatious and passionate Kent, and a sincere Superman. The character risks being vanilla but his modest presence and striking good looks keep your apprehensions away. Nicholas Hoult, who has time and again proved his acting might (The Menu, Mad Max: Fury Road, X-Men), makes for a terrific Lex Luthor. His simmering rage and story deserved more time. Rachel Brosnahan is gorgeous and spirited as a newspaper journalist, who never shies away from asking the tough questions, even to her boyfriend.
Action scenes are outstanding, especially the immersive flying visuals that keep you on the edge. The slowmo scene where Superman glides to shield a girl from an attack is a masterpiece and one of the best in the genre. The detailing in special effects and sound is brilliant.
Superman is entertaining, enjoyable, even epic but never intense. James Gunn’s non-origin story soars high visually but stays limited emotionally. The director’s unyielding need to go traditional comes at a cost. It is still a tremendous cinematic experience that deserves to be watched in IMAX.

Look up, fellas! After years of brooding capes and universe resets, 'Superman' finally finds its charm again. Thanks to director James Gunn’s signature blend of humour, heart, and a healthy dose of comic book absurdity, the film lands where it needs to, bringing joy, light-heartedness, and unfiltered love for source material - all at once. Of course, despite it wanting to, the film may not soar to the high-stakes spectacle of past superhero giants, but it’s always worth ‘looking up’.
This new 'Superman' stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and right from the get-go, it’s clear he’s not here to wear angst like an accessory. His portrayal of Clark Kent is sincere and refreshingly human (a scene in the movie says it out loud as well, just in case), often bringing more of a chuckle than a punch. Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane is razor-sharp and warm. The duo’s chemistry lights up every scene they share, bringing back the newsroom banter and old-school charm that many feared had been lost to grittier reboots.

The story keeps things focused on Superman’s identity and his place in an increasingly sceptical world. He’s not just battling gods or pocket universes here - he’s battling perception, and billionaire tech mogul Lex Luthor, played by a slick and unnerving Nicholas Hoult. Hoult's version of Luthor walks the tightrope between menacing and delightfully theatrical, never seeming caricature.
However, despite the high stakes, make no mistake. This James Gunn film is not chasing gravitas. Instead, it leans fully into his comic book influences, offering up a colourful world that embraces the sillier corners of the DC Universe. Supporting characters like the Justice 'gang', a scene-stealing Krypto the Superdog [or as Terrific says - the flying dog], and even some wild meta-moments (hello, Element Man! and Mr. Terrific!) makes this 'Superman' feel like a vibrant Saturday morning comic brought to life.

That said, not all of it flies. At times, the screenplay tips too far into humour, undercutting the tension occasionally. While comic purists might appreciate the camp and colour, those seeking high-octane superhero action may find the pacing uneven. The action, though visually polished, is light on edge, offering more heart than high stakes.

What Gunn nails, though, is tone. He understands that 'Superman' is as much about ideals as it is about flight and fists. This isn’t a film with a grand political agenda, it’s a throwback to a time when superheroes made us smile, not squirm under moral ambiguity. The political notes are subtle and very time-sensitive, and the emotional throughlines, especially the emphasis on hope and kindness, are what ultimately make the film tick.
Visually, the film is a delight. The cinematography, colour grading, and John Murphy’s vibrant score blend old-school nostalgia with modern spectacle. And yes, Krypto deserves a standalone film of his own - his adorably heroic antics might just make him the unexpected MVP.

While 'Superman' may not rival the genre’s heavyweights or those lamenting a lack of 'serious' storytelling, it doesn’t need to. This is a feel-good blockbuster that knows exactly what it wants to be - a heartwarming, comic-accurate love letter to the world’s first superhero.

Whether you’re a long-time fan or introducing the character to your kids, 'Superman' reminds you why the cape, and the hope it stands for, still matters.

James Gunn’s reboot of DC Comics’ Superman was probably the much-needed reintroduction of the iconic superhero that made us fall in love with the Big Blue. However, the director has chosen to sidestep the original story. The film starts where David Corenswet has been established on Earth for the last 30 years and has established himself as Clark Kent / Superman. The setting of the movie will give you a mixed vibe where you are immersed in a retro yet futuristic Metropolis. Corenswet is joined by Krypto, the super dog, who adds the much-needed laughter occasionally in the movie.

Gunn is clear in his approach with the film and doesn’t take the Zack Snyder route and makes the screenplay a serious tale of events. Gunn has added a few laughs and some quite a few surprise elements that is bound to bring a smile to your face. The element of surprise starts from seeing Bradley Cooper as Jor-El, Superman’s biological father. The actor has made an appearance only through an AI video message that plays out in the film. Besides this, there are two more cameos in the film by John Cena and Sean Gunn. Do not blink, as you might just miss these two in different scenes throughout the film.
All said and done, let’s address the elephant in the room. David Corenswet makes his appearance as the new Superman in the DC Comics universe. The actor brings the old-school charm as the big blue. His physique, style of acting, and dialogue delivery all convince you to believe Corenswet is the iconic superhero we need. The actor looks sharp in the red cape, but makes you want to see him in action a lot more than what has been showcased in the film. The story highlights the emotional turmoil Superman goes through in his life when he discovers the second half of the message his parents had for him recorded in the videotape. And Corenswet has mastered the right emotions of the superhero and what makes him a “human" more than an “alien".

As much as you appreciate Corenswet’s debut as the Big Blue, one cannot ignore the efforts put in by Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. He is a cold-blooded, intelligent and a smart villain who is on a mission to kill Superman. Hoult has done a good job in portraying his character and the bald look kind of suits him, too. Another significant performance is that of Rachel Brosnahan, who plays Lois Lane in the film. Broshnahan will convince you that she is indeed the feisty journalist in real life as well. Besides, the film sees Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced and Edi Gathegi in vital roles as the Justice Gang, who help out Superman in this battle.

The action sequences in the film could have been a little more impactful and edgy. However, it doesn’t disappoint when it comes to the main climax fight sequences that unfolds between Ultraman and Superman. Though you may feel the first half of the film lacks the intensity and the pace, the storytelling surely improves in the second half, making it a lot more edgy as a superhero movie should be. Overall, James Gunn’s attempt at reviving DC is a decent watch that will hopefully give DC Universe the much-needed momentum to build on.
