David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and James Wan's story is inspired by true events and is eerie. Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick's screenplay is captivating but also stretched, especially in the first half. The dialogues are appropriate.

Michael Chaves' direction is splendid. He creates an eerie atmosphere authentically and moreover, also focuses on the family life of the Warrens and the Smurls. The trademark CONJURING stamp is also visible, especially with the rolling disclaimer at the beginning, as well as the depiction of videos and images from real life, which adds to the impact. The opening scene is chilling and so are the sequences in the trial room and the day after the sisters throw away the mirror. The non-frightening scenes are also memorable, particularly the one where Tony (Ben Hardy) proposes to Judy. The second half is much better, with the climax taking the cake.

On the flipside, the narrative takes a while to build up and go all out in terms of scare. This might disappoint fans as THE CONJURING 2 didn't waste much time on this front. That was a major reason why it also worked big time. Secondly, a few questions remain unanswered. A few developments are bewildering. Ideally, Lorraine should have realized that the mirror in the house of the Smurls is the same one that she had encountered before. Though she doesn’t get a chance to see it, her abilities should have made her realize. Also, after what happens to Father Gordon, the Church should have thoroughly investigated the cause of death and his association with the Smurls. But they don't do so. Lastly, a crucial character disappears midway in the film; no explanation given!
Both Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson deliver equally commendable performances. Their characters undergo a change as this time, the attack on them is more personal. Their performances are also tweaked accordingly. Mia Tomlinson is first-rate, especially in the second half. Ben Hardy essays the role of the awkward yet lovable character with panache. Kíla Lord Cassidy and Beau Gadsdon (Dawn Smurl) lend able support. Rebecca Calder (Janet Smurl) and Elliot Cowan (Jack Smurl) are decent. Steve Coulter (Father Gordon) leaves a huge mark.
On the whole, THE CONJURING: LAST RITES has a slow first half but makes up for it with a gripping second post-interval portion and powerful climax. Backed by strong performances and the popularity of the franchise, this final chapter is poised to attract audiences and deliver a fitting farewell at the box office.


The fourth movie in the Conjuring universe, also touted as the finale, is a slowburn horror that burns a bit too slow. It stays loyal to the Conjuring template— big family in a haunted house, creepy attic, and eerie musical toys delivering solid jump scares—but it takes far too long to get to the point. Overloaded with ambition, the uneven pacing may not rob its tension, but it makes the experience more exhausting than terrifying. At 2 hours and 15 minutes, the final instalment feels bogged down by its heavy-handed emotional drama.
Overstuffed, this time around the demonic spirits haunt not just one home but two -- the Warrens and the Smurl family. The story shuttles between these two parallel tracks until they converge in an extended climax. The fear element persists but it gets overshadowed by the family drama.
The film’s standout moment arrives when Lorraine urges her daughter to confront her fear rather than run from it—a rare instance of emotional resonance that cuts through the gloom. It tugs at the heartstrings but ultimately leaves you wishing the rest of the film carried the same force and emotional weight.
Conjuring in 2013 put an end to campy horror with its atmospherics and storytelling. It added depth and different dimension to the genre. With horror upping the ante this year through films like Weapons, The Conjuring’s final chapter struggles to reinvent itself or recapture the suspense and fear of its original.
The film brings together the cast from previous instalments for a moving scene that lingers long after the credits roll. While successful franchises often find a way to resurrect themselves—much like the demons here —perhaps it’s time for The Conjuring to finally bid its farewell. Why risk diluting a brand that reinvented the genre and brought a touch of class to horror?

For over a decade, 'The Conjuring' universe has been the cornerstone of modern horror cinema, known for offering more than jump scares. It's almost been a benchmark. Despite horror elements, at its core, the franchise has always been about Ed and Lorraine Warren, a couple who faced curses while relying on faith, love, and resilience. With The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), director Michael Chaves closes the book on their saga.
The film’s plot centres on one of the Warrens’ most personal investigations yet. Lorraine is confronted with visions of losing not only her husband but also her daughter and son-in-law, turning this case into a deeply emotional one. Unlike earlier entries, where the Warrens fought to save strangers, 'Last Rites' makes the stakes intimate and devastating. This personal angle grounds the film. The film toys with the idea of real terror lying in the possibility of losing the ones we love versus fighting demons and curses.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga once again anchor the film with impeccable performances. Wilson plays Ed with a quiet gravitas and dry humour, while Farmiga gives Lorraine a balance of strength and fragility. Their chemistry is tender yet endearing and serves as the beating heart of the franchise.
The first half of the film is strong, building a moody atmosphere with eerie set pieces. Chaves excels at creating unsettling environments, creaking hallways, ominous shadows, whispers in the silence. But the cracks in the screenplay begin to show, especially in the second half.

Instead of expanding the mythology or building on it, the screenplay leans into familiar tropes, including possessions, exorcisms. While they remain effective, it is not inventive.

Where 'The Conjuring' (2013) and 'The Conjuring 2' (2016) set new standards for mainstream horror with intricately staged sequences, 'Last Rites' often feels content with being predictable.

The climax, unfortunately, is where the film falters most. For all the build-up and expectations leading to it, one would expect it to be a grand, emotionally charged showdown, but the execution is almost juvenile considering the benchmark the franchise has set. It feels rushed and underdeveloped. The stakes are undeniably high, but the tension doesn’t quite escalate to leave you palpitating or on the edge (and this is coming from someone who is usually scared).

Michael Chaves, who previously helmed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), has a knack for creating the right atmosphere but struggles with narrative payoff. His direction here leans heavily into emotion, sometimes at the expense of sustained terror. It is understandable that Last Rites is designed as a farewell. Hence, it makes the film feel less frightening than earlier entries, which doesn't necessarily pay off as well.
Despite its flaws, Last Rites succeeds in one crucial aspect, giving closure. The film doesn’t just end the Warrens’ story, it celebrates it. Surprise cameos from across the Conjuring universe provide moments of dejavu, while the final scenes offer a heartfelt goodbye.

The post-credits sequence features archival footage of the real Ed and Lorraine Warren that ties everything together, leaving you with a lot to process.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is far from perfect. As a horror film, it’s a mixed bag. As a finale, it’s a fitting and emotional send-off for two characters who have become icons of modern cinema.

Her performances in the 2009 drama Up in the Air and the 2008 historical The Boy in the Striped Pajamas among others won her critical acclaim, awards and several nominations for the Golden Globe, the Oscar, SAG and BAFTA. Her recurring role as paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren in The Conjuring cinematic universe has earned her the popular title of the contemporary “scream queen.” Some of her other notable films include The Departed, Orphan and Source Code.

Patrick Wilson is an American actor best known for his recurring role of Ed Warren in the horror flm series The Conjuring.
