There’s something deliciously unsettling about The Drama, a film that thrives in the uncomfortable silences between confessions and the emotional wreckage that follows.

Set largely over the course of one increasingly combustible evening, The Drama follows Charlie (Robert Pattinson) and Emma (Zendaya) as they prepare for their wedding. The venue is locked, the DJ sorted, the cake chosen, the speeches, almost in place. It’s a picture-perfect lead-up, until a drunken, impulsive game cracks that illusion wide open, triggering a visibly unsettling shift in tone.
At the centre of this unravelling are Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, whose chemistry is the film’s most grounding force. There’s an unmistakable ease between them, which feels organic and deceptively casual. They slip between tenderness, absurdity and tension with remarkable fluidity, which makes their relationship feel both intimate and precarious. It’s this push and pull that gives the film its emotional spine, even as everything else begins to fracture.

Zendaya, in particular, delivers a performance that simmers before it shocks, her character Emma’s “almost” act of school violence becoming the film’s most jarring pivot point. Pattinson, meanwhile, brings a quiet volatility, reacting as much as he acts, his silences often speaking louder than the chaos around him.
Together, they create a rhythm that feels real and fully committed to ‘the drama’ through and through.

Everyone on the cast, including the supporting cast, leans fully into the film’s heightened reality, never pulling back even when the material teeters on the edge of absurdity. That unwavering dedication is what keeps The Drama from collapsing under its own ambition.

Behind the camera, the film’s craft choices are just as deliberate. The cinematography leans into intimacy, tight frames, lingering close-ups, and dimly lit interiors that make you feel like an uninvited guest at a dinner you can’t leave. There’s a voyeuristic quality to it all, as if the film is quietly observing rather than directing where you should look.

The editing, too, deserves its own applause. It embraces fragmentation, jumping between emotional beats as scenes bleed into each other, conversations overlap, and at times, it feels like you’re inside the characters’ heads rather than watching them from a distance. It’s messy, yes, but deliberately so.

It’s also very much in conversation with the sensibilities of Kristoffer Borgli, whose work has consistently explored discomfort, and social awkwardness. Much like his earlier films, most notably Sick of Myself, The Drama leans into cringe, contradiction, and moral ambiguity, often blurring the line between satire and sincerity. Borgli has a knack for placing deeply flawed characters in emotionally volatile situations and simply letting them unravel, and that same instinct is at play here.
There’s also an underlying question the film seems to flirt with but never fully answers: Is this a portrait of contemporary America? On paper, it certainly feels like one, a group of privileged, self-aware individuals grappling with morality, identity, and consequence in a hyper-confessional age.

But The Drama resists becoming a neat sociopolitical statement. There are too many contradictions, too many tonal shifts, too many competing ideas unfolding at once. And perhaps that’s the point.

Genre, in fact, becomes irrelevant here. Is it a relationship drama? A psychological spiral? A dark comedy dressed in tension. The answer is all, and none.

There’s a distinct pulp-fiction energy in its storytelling, where moments feel heightened yet grounded in raw human impulsiveness.

If anything, the film’s greatest strength is also its biggest risk; it doesn’t seek clarity or comfort. Instead, it thrives in ambiguity, contradiction and the uneasy space between confession and consequence. It may not offer answers, but it makes sure you sit with the questions long after the credits roll.

The Drama, written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli (Dream Scenario), dissects a seemingly idyllic relationship that faces its harshest litmus test when a buried truth resurfaces with unsettling force.

What begins as a romance -- buoyed by the palpable chemistry between its leads -- gradually morphs into a slow-burn psychological dramedy, with some intentional moments of cringe humour.

The Plot of The Drama
Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson) are on the cusp of marriage following a whirlwind romance. During a dinner with their married friends Mike (Mamoudou Athie, suitably restrained) and Rachel (Alana Haim, just too good), a seemingly harmless game -- confessing the worst thing one has ever done -- drives a dagger into their camaraderie.

Emma's revelation lands like a grenade, leaving Rachel incensed and Charlie spiralling into confusion, doubt, and eventual emotional freefall, all just days before their wedding.

Intentionally Ruptured Romance
From the onset, Borgli ensures the audience remains sceptical about the central pairing.

Their 'meet-cute' is built on a lie: Charlie praises a book Emma is reading, despite having only skimmed a Google summary. The moment is further marred by awkwardness when he realises she is deaf in one ear and didn't even hear his manufactured praise.

We see him later struggling to sanitise this story for his wedding speech, much to his friend's amusement. Even their first kiss comes in a situation that is actually embarrassing for both, with Rachel suggesting Charlie essentially entrapped Emma into the moment.

Emma, too, raises quiet alarms, claiming she had never dated or even harboured a crush until she met Charlie at 28, and having a maid of honour who is essentially tied to Charlie's social circle. These details don't scream danger individually, but together, they sketch a relationship built on uncertain footing.

Psychological Drama That Feels Effective in Places
It is, perhaps, inevitable that such a relationship begins to unravel once Emma's secret surfaces. Borgli mirrors Charlie's mental chaos through the film's fractured, non-linear structure -- scenes cut mid-thought, conversations resumed later, and timelines folding into one another.

While this approach largely complements the tone, there are moments where it feels indulgent. A key climactic sequence, for instance, withholds an act of violence only to reveal its aftermath prematurely, before circling back to show what we already inferred.

The narrative fragmentation also limits our access to Emma's internal turmoil. I found myself wishing for a deeper look into Emma's psyche, how she navigates the looming threat of Rachel's judgment or the cold distance growing in her fiancé.

Instead, the film firmly aligns itself with Charlie's perspective. To its credit, it does so compellingly.
Charlie's descent is both tragic and darkly comic. The film thrives on discomfiture, sometimes visual (a bizarre imagined montage featuring an adult Charlie and a teenage Emma), sometimes behavioural, as Charlie oscillates between fear, denial, and desperate rationalisation. His attempts to justify Emma's actions -- even as he struggles to believe them himself -- are both hilarious and unsettling to watch.

The cracks in their relationship are meticulously placed: Charlie reinterpreting past moments, their bedroom intimacy taking a hit, and sequences like the photoshoot leaning fully into cringe comedy.

Borgli, as an outsider, also attempts to touch upon cultural anxieties, most notably America's relationship with gun violence, which is filtered through his distinctly British protagonist. It's an intriguing moment, though not explored with the depth it perhaps warrants. Gun Control is never attached to the reasoning.

A Chaotic Third Act
All roads lead to a chaotic third act centred around a wedding that feels like it's perched atop a volcano. The tonal juggling here is impressive. It is tense in parts, absurdly funny in others, and also punctuated by a jump-scare that arrives with almost comical timing.

The ending lands on a note of dramatic poignancy, faintly echoing the emotional residue of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Performances That Anchor the Chaos
What truly elevates The Drama are its performances. Zendaya brings an impish charm to the early stretches, which gradually gives way to a more fragile, emotionally exposed portrayal as the narrative darkens. She captures Emma's mental anguish with precision, particularly in the film’s closing movements.

Yet, this is unmistakably Robert Pattinson's film.

There's a distinct echo of FRIENDS' Ross Geller in his portrayal, whether intentional or not, but Pattinson uses that neurotic blueprint to craft something far more layered. He is effortlessly convincing as the slightly awkward, geeky Charlie, and even more so as a man unravelling under the weight of doubt.

The performance walks a fine line. You may laugh at him trying to do further damage in his doubt-control, but you never entirely detach from his emotional incoherence.

The Drama is what you can call a 'feel-bad' romance done right.

The central conflict and its visual grammar, while intentional, may not serve as everyone's cup of tea, particularly its moral ambiguity over the conflict. Yet, it is precisely this ambiguity that makes the film a curious, chaotic affair, helped generously by Oscar-calibrated performances from Robert Pattinson and Zendaya.

Emotional and behavioural upheavals linked to acts contemplated, mishaps suffered, tragedies faced and choices made or evaded (most of them in the past) threaten to derail an impending wedding in The Drama, a darkly absurdist and discomfiting film written and directed by Norwegian filmmaker Kristoffer Borgli.

Starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson as two deeply in love but massively conflicted individuals, The Drama is imbued with the Nordic spirit of moral inquiry of the kind that characterizes a Ruben Ostlund take on human foibles or a Thomas Vinterberg deep dive into ethical indiscretions that can send people and communities into a tailspin.

The Drama takes a genre that has seen varied and multifarious interpretations over the decades and imposes upon it a storytelling style that calls into question assumptions that movies make about love and marriage and the cock-ups that they often trigger for dramatic or comic effect.
I have not seen Borgli's previous two narrative features (Sick of Myself and Dream Scenario, one premiered in Cannes, the other in Toronto) but having seen The Dream, I definitely will.

The Drama isn't just about a wedding. Nor is it only about America's rabid gun culture. The two unrelated themes are integral to the plot. They overlap with each other as Emma Hardwood (Zendaya), a bookstore clerk from Louisiana, and Charlie Thompson (Pattinson), a Londoner posted as the curatorial director of an American art museum, navigate the days leading up to their wedding.

The nitty-gritties of the preparations (complete with interjections by an unsmiling dance choreographer, a heroin-smoking DJ and an overly chirpy wedding photographer) generate an air of mild mirth as the ground is prepared for a serious turn at the point where the initial exposition of the principal characters (presented through two conflicting points of view) meets the business end of the film.

While Charlie shares his side of the story of the first awkward meeting and the blossoming of the romance with best friend Mike (Mamoudou Athie), Emma has a heart-to-heart with Mike's wife, Rachel (Alana Haim).

From a meet-cute at a coffee shop - the sequence begins with a close-up of a lady's ear that is going to return repeatedly to the conversations, reveals and confrontations that are to follow - to a bust-up at the wedding over a case of sexual harassment, The Drama lives up to the title without going overboard.

At a pre-wedding dinner with Rachel and Mike, Emma, a little drunk, is drawn into a seemingly harmless game that leads her to blurt out a secret that leaves her open to instant (and, as it turns out, constant) judgment not only by Rachel but also, more importantly, by the man she is about to marry.

Borgli's ambivalent approach to an act of violence that was contemplated but not eventually committed serves as a narrative tool to conduct an inquest into a desensitized culture that bears witness to alarmingly regular school shootings and then chooses to fixate on the individual perpetrators rather than examining and addressing the larger malaise.

Parts of The Drama may come across as a touch superficial because it is after all a film made by an outsider looking in on an unsettling phenomenon. The turmoil within and around Emma and Charlie - reflected as much in what the duo says to each other and to their friends and colleagues as in a couple of books that surface in the course of the film.

One is titled The Damage, a fictional tome that Charlie pretends to have read simply because he wants to talk to Emma, who is deaf in one ear and has an earphone in the other and is unable to hear what the man tries to say to her in order to draw her attention. The high-strung Charlie is left embarrassed and vulnerable and yet gets a chance to start over with the woman he wants to befriend.

The other book is aptly called Brainrot. It contains photographs of skimpily clad models posing with automatic weapons. It is left on Charlie's desk at the museum but neither he nor his secretary Misha (Hailey Benton Gates) knows by whom or why.

Unanswered questions and baffling conundrums are strewn across the film even as Emma and Charlie, after every dissonant moment, seek to make a fresh beginning and invariably come to the conclusion that it isn't working. But they are so much in love that Charlie never stops believing that he has a future with Emma even though he does not know her fully and perhaps never will.

A garrulous wedding photographer (Zoe Winters in a lively cameo) reminds the duo that they have to exude a sense of always being comfortable with each other. Remember, you know each other very well. That is where the irony lies - Charlie isn't sure he knows what Emma was, is and could be.

Love is a complicated thing, love is making sacrifices, Charlie says. He even cites Freud to the effect that feelings that we do not talk about get buried only to come out in uglier ways. Exactly how unsavoury matters can turn is what Borgli's screenplay explores, with the tone shifting all the time between very solemn and tangentially droll.

The Drama is somewhat reductionist in the manner it probes social hypocrisies and the vicissitudes of life buffeted by the incontrovertible truth that absolutely normal people are capable of straying into shockingly dark spaces of the mind, but with the two lead actors at their very best - this is Zendaya's career-best performance for sure - the film never ceases to be watchable.

It confronts what is uncomfortable and inescapable and grapples with it rather than seek to sugarcoat it.

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are blazingly adorable in this meet-cute relationship that’s very much being forgotten about in the dating world these days. Their chemistry sticks on right from the get-go, as the couple appears almost inseparable throughout the 105 minutes of runtime. There are absolutely unbelievable, hilarious moments in the initial half of the film as it builds up the foundation of the story. There’s a sure shot excitement running through the veins of the project as you wonder what else can go wrong with the wedding after all, and they manage to mess it up further. 
Acting Performances in The Drama

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson are part acceptable, part questionable, but mostly believable as Emma Harwood and Charlie Thompson. They each shine in dedicated scenes, with the latter’s distressed moments being some of his best, and the former’s expressions doing all the work. The true game changer is Alana Haim as Rachel, whose hypocritical disdain takes the spotlight in the end, alongside a worth-mentioning performance from Hailey Gates as Misha.

Final Review of The Drama

The base plot of the storyline presents a big question of how people should carefully choose their relationships and whether someone’s past should affect their future, despite the best attempts at making amends. It also advises not to waste time on something or someone who wouldn’t appreciate you. Ending with a restart for the couple after a messed-up day, it showcases how there may be hope after all. All things said and done, it’s a frustrating turn of events for a willing project that may sit well on a weekend watch but not among your best romance watches.

Zendaya and Robert Pattinson’s Drama we get to see how a confession just a night before the wedding can change everything, so be very careful how much of your past you should disclose to your fiancé.

The plot of the film revolves around a drama that starts with a drunken game, What’s The Worst Thing You’ve Ever Done, just a night before the wedding. Drama shows how the relationship becomes crazily sour, and this truth confessed by the bride-to-be Emma Harwood (Zendaya), a literary editor, changes the whole chemistry between the couple, and both go into an overthinking mode about whether the decision taken was right or not. This confession led to a chain of emotions, and probably the couple didn’t even realize how a mindless drunken game could put so much stress that could change their entire relationship.
Drama is hugely humorous, but at the same time stresses on the complexities of love and relationship and how things might change after marriage. While watching the film too, you will often find yourself questioning how much of our past life or childhood life especially the weird teenage years should one disclose to their partners.
Director Kristoffer Borgli, a Norwegian filmmaker known for dark comedies and satire exploring modern existential dread, social media, and narcissism has been able to handle this hugely complex love story by not cutting down on the humour. In this dark rom-com featuring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson too Kristoffer Borgli is able to bring out the controversial wedding film but not cutting down on his humour which is definitely his forte.
The theme of Drama is just one which talks about how a woman’s confession on the eve of her nuptials causes tension not only amongst the couple, but with their friend circle too and one of them tries too hard to ostracise Emma Harwood (Zendaya) for a silly thing which she not even done, but planned for as a teenager. Emma is also labeled as a psychopath for something that she has not even done, but was thinking of doing as a disturbed teenager.
The film talks about mass shootings in schools, which are very common in the United States. As a teenager Emma developed a fascination for guns and shooting. She reveals that as a 14-year-old (played in flashback by Jordyn Curet) during her drunken game session at the wedding that she literally planned a mass shooting in her school but backed out when she heard another mass shooting was taking place at the local shopping mall. To some extent we realise through the film how teenage years are the toughest phase in one’s life, especially for a child who had to keep changing schools and cities because of her father’s job.
Drama is an amalgamation of two American themes: a wedding comedy and a common high-school shooting. Not just a humorous romantic success story, Drama is much more complex than what you can think it to be. It is indeed a raw and intense love story and a very intelligently made film. The editing of the film is spot-on. Borgli, who is known for making uneasy dark comedy, has given his audience an equally dark, uneasy, yet humorous love story. So, don’t give it a miss!
