The mystery-comedy, based on Leonie Swann’s novel Three Bags Full, is the perfect live-action animated movie, quirky, charming, and touching. The film opens with George writing a letter to a special woman, describing his farm life and his beloved sheep, giving the viewer a glimpse of how deeply he loves them. This quaint world collapses when he is found dead, and there are several suspects, including his long-lost daughter Rebecca Hampstead (Molly Gordon), fellow shepherd Caleb (Tosin Cole), and a local butcher Ham Gilyard (Conleth Hill), innkeeper Beth Pennock (Hong Chau), Reverend Hillcoate (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith), and reporter Elliot Matthews (Nicholas Galitzine).
The ‘smartest sheep in the world’, Lily (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), who can always crack every mystery in the crime stories, and the wise Mopple (Chris O’Dowd) set out to unravel the truth and help the bumbling policeman Tim Derry (Nicholas Braun).
Director Kyle Balda gives the film a Knives Out meets Babe vibe, with writer Craig Mazin ensuring the comedy doesn't overpower the mystery. The editing team of Paul Machliss, Martin Walsh, and Al LeVine shows its prowess with sharp cuts between scenes. Another strong point is the storytelling. The screenplay makes references and then keeps the answers ready for later. The story has many surprises and twists that land perfectly without feeling far-fetched.
While a mystery and a comedy at its core, the narrative also deftly handles heavier themes such as mortality, processing grief, stepping out of one’s comfort zone, and acceptance. The sheep can erase painful memories at the count of three, except for Mopple, to deal with grief. The youngest unnamed lamb (Tommy Birchall) is a pariah in the sheep world for being a winter sheep. Animal cruelty and vegetarianism are touched upon without seeming preachy. The animals are quirky but never over the top.
The film’s performers elevate the narrative to great heights. There’s something incredibly genuine about Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of warmth and love for the animals. Molly Gordon is the emotional anchor, while Emma Thompson, Hong Chau, and Nicholas Braun add the humour.
The voice actors shine in every scene, especially Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the smart yet naive sheep — your heart will go out to her when her beliefs are debunked. Gentle Mopple and gruff Sebastian are perfectly enacted by Chris O’Dowd and Bryan Cranston. Tommy Birchall, as the outcast baby sheep, will tug at your heartstrings with his cuteness.
The animal kingdom is the purest world, and the viewer will be left moist-eyed on many occasions in this movie, which is wholesome in its theme and winsome in its performances. This is one of those family entertainers that will be enjoyed by kids as much as grown-ups.

He treats his sheep more like friends than livestock, reading them detective stories at night and protecting them from local business types who want his field for bigger profits. George believes the sheep enjoy the stories for the atmosphere. Little does he know, they follow every twist perfectly – they just can't speak back in English.

When a murder rocks the peaceful village of Denbrook, the humans scramble in confusion. But the real detectives are the flock itself.

Led by thoughtful Lily (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), steady Mopple (Chris O’Dowd), grand Sir Richfield (Patrick Stewart), and clever Sebastian (Bryan Cranston), the sheep notice details that people miss. They nudge, bleat, and cleverly guide the investigation without anyone realising. It is utterly silly, yet the film plays it with such straight-faced warmth that you happily go along for the ride.What makes The Sheep Detectives special is how it balances the serious business of murder with light, feel-good fun. The killing isn't ignored, but the story quickly moves into the joy of the chase rather than dwelling in darkness. This keeps things perfect for family viewing.

Nicholas Braun brings lovely comic timing as the local policeman, while Emma Thompson steals her brief scenes as a no-nonsense lawyer with sharp one-liners that had me chuckling. The human cast feels properly British – a bit eccentric, very likeable – even if the golden sunshine sometimes makes rural England look suspiciously like California.

The digital sheep blend surprisingly well with the live-action world. Their expressions are wonderfully animated, full of personality without ever feeling fake. You genuinely start caring about this flock – their fear of losing their home adds a quiet emotional pull beneath all the fun. It is not just about solving a crime; it is about these timid animals finding their courage.

For Indian audiences, there is something extra comforting here. Like so many of our own beloved family films – think of the warmth in childhood movies where animals teach us lessons about loyalty and cleverness – The Sheep Detectives celebrates community, kindness, and looking out for one another.In a busy world, it is refreshing to see a story that values gentle instincts over loud heroism. Parents can enjoy it with kids without worrying about anything too scary or inappropriate. The humour is gentle, the messages positive, and the whole thing leaves you smiling.Of course, not everyone will fall for talking digital animals. If you prefer your murder mysteries gritty and realistic, this might feel too light. But for those willing to embrace the absurdity, The Sheep Detectives offers pure entertainment. It moves at a brisk pace, never outstays its welcome, and delivers proper heart alongside the laughs.

Jackman anchors everything with his calm, generous presence, reminding us why he remains such a likeable screen star. The supporting voices add plenty of personality, turning the sheep into a proper team you root for.

The Sheep Detectives movie review: You can’t pull the wool over these sheep’s eyes, that’s for sure. This adaptation of the bestseller novel Three Bags Full by author Leonie Swann, about a flock of them solving the murder of their shepherd, may sound meh. And cutesy talking animals are often a blah.

However, it is surprising how meaty this story, set in a quaint English village called Denbrook, turns out to be in director Kyle Balda and scriptwriter Craig Mazin’s hands, with all the charms and notes of an Agastha Christie mystery. Balda, incidentally, has Minions and Despicable Me 3 in his portfolio, while Mazin – surprise, surprise – was a writer on Chernobyl and The Last of Us. Follow the clues… as the best detective novels advise.

And the sheep do the same. They have a picture perfect (literally) life as the flock of shepherd George (Jackman), who has given all of them names and keeps them well-fed and looked after with a medical concoction he has himself devised. Every evening, George gathers his sheep around and tells them a night-time story, mostly a murder mystery. The moment he has his back turned, the sheep are discussing the tale and who could be the killer among themselves, making it clear that they understand the humans perfectly.
One morning, after a stormy night, George is found dead. The bumbling local cop, Tim (a delightful Braun, whom you may know as Cousin Greg from Succession), is the most rattled at the possibility of having a bloody mystery to solve, in the sleepy Denbrook where even local tourists don’t stumble by.
However, still waters run deep, and nowhere do they run deeper than in villages that are arranged around one church, one inn, one cop, one butcher, and so on. Denbrook’s staples are inn owner Beth (a disappointingly underutilised Chou), Reverend Hillcoate, Tim, butcher Ham and another shepherd whom George’s sheep like but not George too much, Caleb. Enter into the mix George’s long-lost daughter Rebecca (Gordon), George’s city-slicker lawyer Lydia Harbottle (Thompson), and a failed, nosy journalist Elliot (Galitzine).

The sheep are there, listening and peeping in, as Harbottle reads the will, unknown millions of dollars are discovered, and a “motive” is quickly established. Lily (Louis-Dreyfus), one of George’s favourites and the cleverest in the flock by far, leads the “investigation”, ably supported by the solemn Mopple (O’Dowd), and occasionally the street-savvy loner Sebastian (Cranston). They must lead the sheep through doubts and several wrong turns, with Hall as the sheep Cloud, among others, perfectly delightful. Cloud’s astonishment at the shape of a bracelet, “The Thing With No End!”, is a joy to watch.

But, The Sheep Detectives is not going for delight alone, though there is that. It handles some particularly heavy topics, including courage, death, the choice to forget vs the power to remember, and rejection of the “other.” Like Lily, Sebastian (who has a particularly heroic arc) and the gang, Tim’s transformation is equally warm and unforced, even if the sheep have to nudge him towards a mystery novel to get his detective juices flowing.The Sheep Detectives is slow getting off the ground, and some of its lines are not either funny or engaging when George is having his heart-to-hearts, setting the stage for his demise.

Don’t count sheep yet, though. Wait for Braun, with his English accent, tapping into the non-plussed quality he brought to Greg’s role in Succession to entirely opposite effect here. His long, gesticulating fingers alone are an expression, encompassing his incredulity as to why the same three sheep are always turning up around him.
And then there is Dame Emma Thompson. Has she ever turned her acerbic tongue and sharp eyes onto someone and not drawn blood? She swishes in on her expensive car into Denbrook, and immediately lifts The Sheep Detectives to another level.

Once the sheep have done their shepherding, that is.

 
The Sheep Detectives is a charming, funny, and also somewhat melancholic film meant mainly for kids, but would move adults too.

Adapted by Craig Mazin from the bestselling book, Three Bags Full, by Leonie Swann, and directed by Kyle Balda (Despicable Me), the film uses live action and digitally created sheep, with beautifully rendered expressions.

It is a bit of Babe and Paddington in look and The Thursday Murder Club in spirit, where a bunch of unlikely detectives -- in this case, sheep -- solve a crime.

A Unique Premise and Beloved Characters
Sheep are supposed to be stupid, but the kind-hearted shepherd George (Hugh Jackman) treats his flock with affection, giving them names and noting their quirks; they are of different sizes and colours, with their own recognisable traits.

Amusingly, there are also two head-butting rams, whose unprovoked violence comes in handy later. The frisky lambs and the older, wise sheep love George too. Like a bunch of eager children, his flock listens attentively as he reads aloud to them, mostly murder mysteries. The sheep bleat for humans, but speak English among themselves.

The Unlikely Investigation
Set in the picture postcard village of Denbrook, where everybody knows everybody, George is a loner, so it is unimaginable to the sole cop of the village, the bumbling young Tim (Nicolas Braun), that he should be murdered.

'Heart attack,' he declares, trying to close his first murder case, but a nosy journalist, Elliot (Nicholas Galitzine), passing through Denbrook, points out clues, and for the sake of a juicy story attaches himself to the investigation.

Like kids are told that dead people become stars in heaven, the sheep have no concept of death, they believe they become clouds.
Sheep Take the Lead
But the clever sheep Lily (voiced by Julia Louis-Dreyfus), and her main cohorts, Mopple (Chris O'Dowd), Sir Richfield (Patrick Stewart) and the cynical recluse Sebastian (Bryan Cranston), decide they can solve the crime, having heard enough stories.

They have to find ways to point Tim towards the clues they find, and they do manage inventive ways of nudging the baffled cop. The suspects are rival sheep farmer Caleb (Tosin Cole), Ham, a butcher (Conleth Hill), a priest (Kobna Holdbrook-Smith), and the sullen inn-keeper (Hong Chau).

George's long lost daughter, Rebecca (Molly Gordon), who mysteriously appears a day before his death becomes a suspect too, after the lawyer (Emma Thompson) reads the will.

Themes of Grief and Acceptance
The sheep, already grieving George's death, have to leave the safety of their meadow to venture out. They also discover that Caleb and Ham want to use the flock for meat, unlike George, who reared them for wool.

Through the character of Sebastian and a tiny lamb shunned for being a winter sheep -- most sheep are born in spring -- the film gently makes a case for accepting the outsider. The film may be a bit short on humour, having decided that the tone would be emotional and heart-tugging, but The Sheep Detectives is still delightful and wholesome in the way family movies used to be before kids started getting too smart to be easily pleased.

Hugh Jackman brings his star appeal to the role of the shepherd, his eyes twinkling with joy at their antics.

The voice cast is so wonderful that the scenes with the sheep are far more entertaining than the ones with humans.
