Benny Safdie’s docudrama about UFC champion and MMA legend Mark Kerr is not your typical sports biopic. Instead of idolising its subject, it dissects the highs and lows of a man once thought invincible, only to reveal how fragile he truly was.

Set between 1997 and 2000, the film traces Kerr’s career during his prime years, from back-to-back wins in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) to lucrative Pride tournaments in Japan. Nicknamed “The Smashing Machine” for his ferocity inside the cage, Kerr (played by Dwayne Johnson) comes across as soft-spoken, even shy, outside of it. This duality becomes the film’s greatest tension.
Safdie opens with archival-style footage capturing Kerr’s dominance. In interviews, he charms journalists with his boy-next-door smile, but inside the ring, he is a force of nature. That dissonance is fascinating, and Safdie wastes no time peeling back the veneer. Soon, cracks appear in Kerr’s carefully sculpted image, a volatile relationship with his girlfriend Dawn (Emily Blunt), a crippling dependence on painkillers, and a gnawing fear of failure.
The film’s emotional core rests on the Kerr-Dawn relationship. Blunt is nearly unrecognisable here, navigating between tenderness and fury with deft control. Their dynamic is a constant push-pull, affectionate one moment, destructive the next. While Dawn isn’t fleshed out beyond the archetype of the “difficult partner,” Blunt’s performance injects nuance into what could have been a thankless role.
Johnson, however, is the revelation. Stripped of his usual action-hero swagger, he embodies Kerr with startling authenticity. From the wrestler’s deliberate gait to his quiet, halting speech patterns (eerily close to the real Kerr as seen in HBO’s 2003 documentary), Johnson disappears into the role. For an actor long typecast as indestructible, this performance is both transformative and career-defining.

Safdie resists the traditional “comeback arc” often found in sports dramas. Instead, he leans into the spiral, Kerr’s addiction deepens, his relationship frays, and his identity as an undefeated champion collapses. Victory, Kerr admits, was his ultimate high, “better than sex.” Without it, he is nothing.

Ryan Bader adds texture as Mark Coleman, Kerr’s close friend, training partner, and sometimes rival. Stylistically, Safdie keeps the action grounded. The fight sequences are stripped of Hollywood spectacle, no slow-motion, no glorified choreography. It leans heavily on the raw, bruising realism of men battering each other. The violence is unsettling but not gratuitous; the point is not the blood, but the toll.

What elevates 'The Smashing Machine' is Safdie’s refusal to mythologise Kerr. He is neither hero nor villain, but a deeply human figure caught in a punishing cycle. The “machine” of the title isn’t just Kerr’s nickname, it’s the system of pain, pressure, and performance that chews him up. The film’s most haunting realisation is that even when Kerr wins, he’s still losing something, his health, his sanity, his relationships.
Yet the film isn’t entirely bleak. There is a quiet and subtle message about love, loyalty, and friendship beneath all the chaos and mess one notices. Kerr may not find redemption in the ring, but he does in the people who refuse to abandon him.

The Smashing Machine isn’t a knockout in the conventional sense. It drags in parts, and Dawn’s character could have used more depth. But as a study of masculinity, fragility, and the price of greatness, it packs a mean punch. Above all, it gives us Dwayne Johnson like we’ve never seen him before: stripped down, bruised, and utterly real.
