The posters whispered one name. The trailer practically spelled it out. And then the makers spent the week before release insisting no, no, it's not about him, just watch the movie. They were half right. TN 2026 is less a targeted takedown and more a grab bag of political theater, tossing every recognizable trope of the actor-to-politician pipeline into a blender and hitting pulse. Gulkand Kumar (Natty) arrives from another state speaking Tamil with a mangled accent that turns basic sentences into unintended punchlines. He's spotted by Sivalinga Mandradiyar (Thambi Ramaiah), a Pollachi zamindar and devout MGR follower who sees the ghost of his idol in this struggling actor. After a series of flops, Mandradiyar bankrolls him, advising on script choices and throwing a fit when Gulkand considers a villain role (MGR would never). But it works. Gulkand becomes a star. Then a bigger star. Then the kind of star who tells the man who made him to stop addressing him casually.
As fan clubs morph into a political front and Gulkand guns for Chief Minister, the references multiply. A newly formed party with an orange and black flag jabbing at both the center and the state. The party head living it up in his mansion while his supporters' lives stay the same. Parasites who latch onto his superstardom for their own gain. Media that's either bought or clueless or both. Hardcore fans who never had a brain to begin with. Director Umapathy Ramaiah, Thambi Ramaiah's son, keeps things moving at a clip, rarely letting scenes linger past their welcome.
The issue is sharpness. Despite all the pre-release noise, the satire plays broad rather than pointed. It takes aim at everything and commits to skewering nothing. That safe, "both sides of the coin" quality gives it a mildly underwhelming finish. The overall arc feels generic enough that individual scenes carry more weight than the story connecting them. Some jokes land cleanly, others dissolve on contact. The accumulated small instances ring bells, but the structure holding them together stays flat.
What keeps TN 2026 watchable, and genuinely fun in stretches, is Natty. His manic energy is perfectly suited to this kind of role. The accent work early on is hilarious, and as Gulkand grows into a swaggering star-politician, Natty finds new comic registers without losing the character's through line. There's something almost hypnotic about watching him commit this fully to a caricature that keeps escalating. Thambi Ramaiah anchors the emotional side as the mentor who builds a monster, and MS Bhaskar and Ilavarasu provide reliable support as his circle. Redin Kingsley does what Redin Kingsley does: loud, unfiltered, occasionally amusing. P.G. Muthiah's cinematography has some nice frames.
TN 2026 entertains without quite cutting deep enough to sting. The moments work; the movie around them could have been sharper.
