Jared Bush's story is fantastic and serves as a nice sequel to the much-loved ZOOTOPIA [2016]. Jared Bush's screenplay is engaging and entertaining. The dialogues add to the fun and also the emotions.

Jared Bush and Byron Howard's direction is splendid. Just like the first part, this one also has a run time of 108 minutes, which makes it one of the lengthiest Disney animated films. However, there's so much happening every minute that it doesn't feel tedious. This time, the makers explore the friendship of Judy and Nick more and also provide more information about the mysterious parts of the city, hitherto unknown. What's interesting is that the makers make a larger point and mirror the reality of today's times. This makes ZOOTOPIA 2 not just a film for kids but a complete family entertainer. The tension between Judy and Nick is moving, while the pre-climax and climax is quite nail-biting.

On the flipside, the ending is a bit convenient. The whole angle of the therapy session is forced and doesn’t add much to the laughter. A few characters, which were memorable in ZOOTOPIA, get a very raw deal in the sequel, especially Chief Bogo.
Ginnifer Goodwin perfectly brings out the peppiness and eagerness and breathes life into the much-loved Judy Hopps. Jason Bateman yet again gets his suave act right and this time, he is also vulnerable. Idris Elba is superb and one wishes he had more to do this time. Fortune Feimster and David Strathairn are decent. Danny Trejo (Jesús), Ke Huy Quan (Gary De'Snake) and Andy Samberg (Pawbert Lynxley) are quite good. Patrick Warburton (Mayor Brian Winddancer) is very entertaining, though his change of heart in the end is difficult to digest. Quinta Brunson (Dr Fuzzby; therapist) gets no scope. Maurice LaMarche (Mr Big) is superb and his mere presence leads to laughter. Finally, Shakira (Gazelle) adds to the star value.
The song ‘Zoo’ is foot-tapping. Michael Giacchino's music is energetic. Cory Loftis's production design is very detailed and rich. The animation, as expected, matches global standards. Jeremy Milton's editing is fast-paced.
On the whole, ZOOTOPIA 2 is a fun, emotionally engaging and visually dazzling entertainer for the entire family. Moreover, backed by the popularity of the first film and Shraddha Kapoor’s association with the Hindi version, it has the potential to spring a surprise at the box office and attract strong footfalls, especially over the weekends.

When the feisty and unstoppable rabbit cop Judy Hopps teams up with the sly and lonesome fox Nick Wilde to crack cases in Zootopia, their unconventional partnership becomes the talk of the town. Their own department isn’t particularly thrilled to see these two unlikely partners solving cases, and it’s only a matter of time before they land themselves in trouble. This time, Judy gets entangled in a case involving a pit viper, Gary De’Snake, who isn’t welcome in Zootopia — a land by the mammals, of the mammals, and for the mammals — but is it really?
Writer and director Jared Bush, along with Byron Howard, crafts a story that is different from most animated films, though not necessarily pathbreaking. But at least it’s different. For once, we don’t have an evil, all-powerful enemy trying to destroy the world. Instead, there’s a touch of suspense and a quest to uncover the truth. It’s less of an adventure and more of a human-like drama; less of a typical children’s film plot and more of a grown-up theme. What works most are the three central characters — each distinct, endearing, and with just enough depth to be funny and adorable.
Ginnifer Goodwin aces it as Judy, the determined and kind-hearted rabbit who will go out of her way to help a stranger. Jason Bateman is equally apt as Nick Wilde, the loner and low-energy fox who is quite the opposite of Judy and was once a con artist before turning cop. Their history from the original and their chemistry here remain the beating heart of the film.
Ke Huy Quan’s Gary De’Snake is charming and cute — with a missing fang and wide eyes that make him look irresistibly vulnerable. The film’s plot, though completely based in the mammal metropolis with returning characters from the first film (Police Chief Bogo voiced by Idris Alba and Shakira, as the famous Thomson's gazelle pop star), still stands alone and can be enjoyed even without knowing much of what happened earlier, thanks to a brief recap at the start.
While this is one of Disney’s less grand animated films, one would hope its simplicity and strong writing would elevate it further. But despite having a decent and unique storyline, Zootopia 2 lacks the X-factor. It never rises above the cutesy goings-on and the usual animated tropes, sprinkled with witty animal puns on contemporary brands like Zoogle (for Google) and Eaw-Tube (for YouTube). Musically, the film is average; Shakira’s “Come On Get On Up” sounds so close to 'Waka Waka' they might as well have used that instead.
Zootopia 2 is undeniably enjoyable – funny, sweet and beautifully animated, but like most sequels, it never quite reaches the freshness or surprise of the original. The franchise clearly has room to go bolder.
Overall, like most sequels, Zootopia 2 doesn’t surpass the original. It is undeniably enjoyable – funny, sweet and a beautifully animated film that ticks most boxes. But as a franchise, it still has the potential to be far more than just a sequel-churning machine.
