This is a great place to check out the latest in Indian theatre writing!!

This month's podcast features DHARMOTTHĀNAM.

Written by: Shatrupa Bhattacharyya

Originally written in Bengali

Reading in Hindi | Duration - 90 mins

Synopsis of the Play:

It is September 1946. Calcutta is still reeling from the horrific Hindu-Muslim riots that claimed the lives of thousands only four weeks ago. But, Durga Puja is around the corner. And Debobrata Bandopadhyay, a rising member of the Hindu Mahasabha, is inaugurating the Puja with a production of Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Debi Chaudhurani.

As the five actors chosen for the production, meet over twelve days to rehearse this purportedly women-centric play, Parbati Chaudhury, playing Debi Chaudhurani, begins pointing out the Brahmanical patriarchy that underpins it. As she becomes more vocal about her critique with her cast-mates, she finds herself on a collision course with the director, Debabrata.
