Behind The Scenes

Gaysi Family is a media platform and safe zone for queer desis that was formed in 2008. We hold space for queer folx from across Southeast Asia to share their stories and experiences, while engaging with others from the community.

We believe that it is critical to understand what it means to be queer. While people are aware that being queer means being LGBT, we must also understand that queerness is a philosophy, a politics, a sensibility. Queerness extends beyond sexual orientations, gender definitions or identities, and includes anything that’s different or alternative to the structures normalized in contemporary society.

Inqueerable is the brainchild of theatre practitioner Vikram Phukan and Queer Ink’s Shobhna S Kumar. Nurturing creativity, promoting the queer word and providing a safe space for dialogue is the best way to change attitudes about LGBTQIA+ Indian communities. Our vision is to portray queer experiences through a range of works that look at queer lives outside the lens of identity politics, and takes the discourse ahead. Apart from theatre events, InQueerAble organises film screenings, panel discussions and networking events.

Theatre Jil Jil Ramamani is a theatre outfit begun in 2018 by artistic director Vikram Phukan. Its focus is original texts that illuminate marginalised narratives, devised for the stage with compact collaborative teams. Its repertoire includes the plays Those Left Behind Things, Haiku in a Bun, No Spring Chicken, Dry Ice, 11:11 and the upcoming Adventures of Jil Jil. Under its aegis, a platform for queer theatre, InQueerAble, was set up in partnership with Shobhna S Kumar’s Queer Ink.

Five Senses Theatre is a theatre outfit co-founded by Hardik Shah, and began as an ensemble of National School of Drama alumni seeking to create new performances using collaborative and symbiotic processes. Five Senses Theatre believes in the ancient and the organic. They strive to engage all the senses in order to find true expression — exploring, creating, learning, and sharing with utmost sensitivity in the physical presence of each other. Apart from creating plays like the Hindi adaptation of Manuel Puig’s Kiss of the Spider Woman or the devised physical comedy The Job, they conduct workshops and training programmes for actors, corporate groups and NGOs.
