SKETCHWALK with Zainab Tambawalla

Join us with illustrator Zainab Tambawalla on a sketch walk as we document the changing streets, people, surroundings, and stories in a simple and uninhibited manner.

The workshop will begin with a walkthrough of our ongoing exhibition where we examine the Flemish artist Solvyns's portraits of the city of Bengal and its people. Solvyns was among the first European artists to document the people and material culture that he encountered over the decade he lived in Bengal during the 1790s. Unlike his contemporaries who focused on scenery, architecture, or nature, Solvyns's work offers a series of portraits depicting individuals engaged in their daily trades and professions.

Through a step-by-step breakdown of the process, the workshop will focus on observing and sketching people and their surroundings.

Zainab Tambawalla has studied applied art at Abhinav Kala Mahavidyalaya, Pune and Animation Film Design at NID, Ahmedabad. She has illustrated several children's books and has also worked on two award-winning films. She is drawn to documenting stories, spaces, environments and anything that catches her eye. Bringing life into the mundane through her art inspires her. She teaches at the Ecole Intuit Lab, in Mumbai. In the year 2020, Urban Sketchers selected her proposal to document the stories of the craftsmen of Mumbai during Covid, through her reportage titled “The Spirit of Mumbai”
