About the artist:

Vijay Gonahalu was born on 22nd September, 1977, into a family of musicians. He received intensive training in vocal music from his father, Pandit Basavaraj Gonahalu, a well-known vocalist and AIR artist, who was a disciple of Gaanayogi Pandit Puttaraj Gawai of the Kirana and Gwalior Gharanas.

It was in 1999 that fortune smiled on him when Padma Bhushan Pandit Arvind Parikh, the well-known sitar maestro and the senior-most disciple of Ustad Vilayat Khan accepted him as his student. After that, a close ‘guru-shishya’ relationship developed between the two and Vijay has been an ardent follower and a disciple since then. Vijay represents the Imdadkhani/Etawah Gharana, also called the Vilayat Khani Gharana. Vijay holds a master’s degree in Sitar, from Maharaja Sayaji Rao University, Baroda, and a Gold Medal for the ‘Visharad’ exam in 2002, from the Akhila Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya.

He is a ‘B High’ graded artist of the All India Radio (Akashwani). Vijay was awarded the title ‘Swarashree’ in 2017.
