About the venue

Located in Rajasthans Hanumangarh district, the Kalibangan Museum was established in 1985 to house material from excavations undertaken from 1961 to 1969. These investigations revealed Early and Mature Harappan settlements, including what is regarded as the earliest ploughed field. The museum presents core findings that illustrate the regions role within the wider Indus Valley tradition and the development of early agricultural and urban systems.

Collections

The museum contains three galleries that display terracotta toys, pottery, beads, copper tools, and painted potsherds. Prominent exhibits include vessels marked with graffiti, Harappan seals, and skeletal remains recovered from burial areas. Together these objects provide insight into planning, agriculture, technology, and craftsmanship within Indus Valley communities and demonstrate the sophistication of their cultural practices.

We drove all the way from Amritsar to Kalibangan to see the excavated site and the museum. Unfortunately, we arrived on Friday. Museum was closed. So next day we were trying to go to Jodhpur, but we had to start late because the museum opened at 10 o’clock. One thing that I found was that the staff in the security guards at the museum were quite negative and they just told us to go to the excavation site and see for ourselves. There was no guide. They said some staff will help you they’ll be there, but nobody was there and except mounds of earth. Nobody told us that all the excavations have been covered with plastic and mud and there’s nothing to see. They were no boards. No description, no historical data to tell us what is where. So we came back to the museum and we told the staff and security guard, which were too many for that place and they said there is nothing we can do you’ll have to come tomorrow. So we went the next day. and visited the museum, I asked if I can meet the archaeologist, but the staff over there was like as if I wanted to meet some really big official and said that I don’t know if he would want to meet you and this and that so we decided not to meet anybody, just saw the museum and came out I wish there was guide on an audio guide to tell us what’s there in the museum. What was found how it was discovered how it was labelled as things like weights and other things which are of great interest. Overall, the visit to Kalibangan was very drab, even though it’s so rich and so significant in our history and human history on the whole. There’s a lot that can be done to make it more interesting and attractive and lucrative for people to visit. we were two of us and two bikes, and we wanted to tell the story to other people so that they can go and visit and see cultural and historical heritage, but I’m afraid there’s nothing much to tell so I really would like if somebody can get their act together and make it really worthwhile for people to visit. There’ll be lots of riders who would like to ride there and drive there, and you know just visit and then go and stay in places nearby, and it’s a fantastic place, so please do something. The ticket to the museum costs five rupees, which is ridiculous for the significance of this place!Read More
