The Tomb of Rabia Daurani, known as Bibi Ka Maqbara, is one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture and closely resembles the Taj Mahal at Agra.

Historical Background

Rabia Daurani, also known as Dilras Banu Begum, was the chief wife of Emperor Aurangzeb, who ruled from 1658 to 1707 C.E. The mausoleum was commissioned by her son, Prince Azam Shah, in her memory. Construction began in 1651 C.E. and took nearly ten years. The design was conceived by Ataullah, son of Ustad Ahmad Lahori, the architect of the Taj Mahal, with engineering support from Hanspat Rai.

Location and Significance

Located in Aurangabad, the monument represents Mughal funerary architecture in the Deccan and reflects the patronage and artistic traditions of the later Mughal period.

Architectural Materials and Design

Set within a char bagh garden enclosed by high walls, the complex features fountains, pools and pavilions. Entry is through a southern wooden gate with brass foliage designs, leading to a screened path lined with fountains. The marble mausoleum stands on a high platform with four minarets and a delicately crafted dome. The queen’s remains lie in a lower chamber surrounded by an octagonal marble screen. A mosque to the west was added later by the Nizam of Hyderabad.

Bibi Ka Maqbara is a graceful Mughal-era monument that often draws comparisons to the Taj Mahal, yet it holds its own quiet identity and charm. Built in memory of Dilras Banu Begum, it stands as a symbol of love and remembrance, wrapped in elegant Persian-inspired architecture. The white marble façade, delicate carvings, and balanced symmetry give it a serene and dignified appearance. The central dome, flanked by slender minarets, creates a visually soothing structure, especially when seen against the backdrop of the gardens and reflecting pathways. Unlike more crowded heritage sites, Bibi Ka Maqbara often offers a calmer, more relaxed experience, allowing visitors to walk around, observe details, and appreciate its historical essence without rush. The surrounding garden adds freshness to the space, making it pleasant for photography and quiet reflection. Though it may not match the grandeur of the Taj Mahal in scale, it carries emotional depth and architectural beauty that makes it an important heritage landmark in Aurangabad.Read More

The premises are clean and well-maintained, which is appreciated. However, the monument itself appears to need better preservation. There are several visible signs of damage that have not been repaired, and parts of the exterior have darkened over time, affecting its overall appearance. Given its historical significance, I hope the authorities invest more effort in restoring and maintaining this beautiful monument. One convenient feature is that you can book your tickets online, making the entry process quick and hassle-free.Read More

## Review: Bibi Ka Maqbara (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar/Aurangabad, Maharashtra) – A Stunning Historical Masterpiece Plagued by Severe Administrative Neglect Commonly referred to as the "Taj of the Deccan," Bibi Ka Maqbara is a striking 17th-century Mughal mausoleum commissioned by Prince Azam Shah in memory of his mother, Dilras Banu Begum. While the architectural beauty and geographical setting remain undeniably impressive, the monument is currently suffering from a severe, highly visible lack of maintenance. ### The Good: "Serene Ambience and Mountain Views" From a purely structural and atmospheric perspective, the location offers a wonderful initial impression: * **Stunning Backdrop:** The monument is surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape, offering a **good view of the surrounding mountains** that perfectly frames the white domes. * **Peaceful Exploration:** Unlike the chaotic crowds frequently found at the Taj Mahal in Agra, this location offers **no rush**. The atmosphere is remarkably calm, allowing history enthusiasts to walk through the main complex, pathways, and gardens at a relaxed, unhurried pace. ### The Bad: Total Lack of Cleanup and Preservation Despite its immense historical and cultural significance, the site feels completely forgotten by its caretakers: * **Administrative Neglect:** The overall premises feel **totally ignored**. There is a distinct, deeply disappointing absence of ongoing **cleanup or active preservation** work. * **Fading Splendor:** Dust, unkempt garden patches, and general wear and tear are prominent throughout the area. It is painfully obvious that the **Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) needs to step up and take proper care of the monument** before the structural deterioration becomes irreversible. ### Entry Fees and Logistics The entry ticket pricing structure is highly economical for domestic visitors but features a significant gap for international travelers: * **Indian Citizens:** A very affordable **₹20 per ticket** (with a small ₹5 variation depending on whether you book online or physically at the counter). * **Foreign Tourists:** Charged at **₹300 per ticket**. ### Final Verdict Bibi Ka Maqbara is an architectural marvel that absolutely deserves a place on your travel itinerary due to its magnificent layout, lack of heavy crowds, and scenic mountain views. However, the blatant neglect regarding cleanliness and preservation heavily dilutes what should be a world-class heritage experience. ASI must prioritize this Deccan jewel immediately. **Our Rating: ⭐⭐⭐.5 (3.5 out of 5 stars — Deducted significantly for poor maintenance)**Read More
