Cooch Behar Palace, also called the Victor Jubilee Palace, was constructed in 1887 C.E. by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan of the Koch dynasty. It is admired for its distinctive blend of European and Indian architectural influences.

Historical Background

The palace once housed the royal family and contains the Durbar Hall, bedrooms, living and dining areas, billiards hall, dressing room, ladies gallery, library and the toshakhana. A few rooms have been converted into a museum displaying weaponry, paintings and antiquities including sculptures of Avalokitesvara from the 10th to 12th century C.E., Surya from the 7th to 8th century C.E., Vishnu from the 10th to 12th century C.E. and Sadyojata from the 10th to 12th century C.E., along with gold ornamented glassware from the Gosanimari region.

Location and Significance

Situated in Cooch Behar town in northern West Bengal, the palace reflects the opulence and cosmopolitan tastes of the Koch rulers and is one of the finest royal residences in Eastern India.

Architectural Materials and Design

Built in red brick, the structure features turrets, spires and pilasters with terracotta mouldings, while the grand iron dome rises 120 feet above the Durbar Hall. Breezy verandas and English style interiors enhance its stately character.
