About the venue

+1

Nalanda Mahavihara is one of the most ancient universities in the world. Founded by Kumaragupta I between 413 and 455 C.E., it received continued patronage from King Harshavardhana between 606 and 647 C.E. and from the Pala rulers between the 8th and 12th centuries C.E. The site preserves the remains of a major monastic and scholastic centre active from the 3rd century B.C.E. to the 13th century C.E.

Historical Background

Nalanda flourished as a centre of organized learning for nearly eight hundred years, attracting students from across Asia, including the Chinese scholars Hiuen Tsang and I Tsing. Theology, grammar, logic, astronomy, metaphysics and philosophy were taught here. Its decline began in the later Pala period, and in about 1200 C.E. the invasion of Bakhtiyar Khalji caused widespread destruction by fire.

Location and Significance

Located in Bihar, Nalanda marks the evolution of Buddhism as a religion and the growth of monastic traditions. Excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India uncovered temples, monasteries, inscriptions, sculptures and antiquities across more than a square kilometre.

Architectural Materials and Design

The principal temple, Site 3, follows the panchayatan style with a main shrine on a rectangular plinth and four corner shrines. Its towers once held niches with stucco images of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. Other remains include sculptures of Buddhist and Brahmanical deities, murals, copper plates, sealings, coins and terracottas. A site museum displays these antiquities.

A heart touching memory visiting Nalanda University ruins. Always studied in history had a desire to visit. Being from Bihar doesn't means that you get every chance to explore Bihar which I got this time .....no planning no preparation suddenly the wheels hit the road towards exploring our own Bihar . And we reached Nalanda Ruins. How enormous and magnificent it is ...I want to travel back in time and study here ....be a part of Nalanda where 1000 scholors from Asia used to get knowledge. A place for every person to visit. Every body in this world should visit this place once in their life time. As I beleive I am not a tourist I am a traveler exploring places and learning about them and there are many more such experiences to be added to my dream list. While visiting this have good amount of time in hand its very vast ,a good walking shoes will help. Visit in winter or prewinter and spring as summers are scorching heat. New lighting works are going on inside the ruins which will make it magnificient in the dark also. Yes after sometime we will be able to visit it in the evening also.Read More

Visiting the Nalanda University Ruins was an incredible experience. A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most significant historical landmarks, these remains belong to Nalanda Mahavihara — among the world’s earliest residential universities and a leading centre of learning from the 5th to the 12th century. Spanning a vast area, the complex is peaceful and well‑preserved. Plan 3–4 hours to explore its monasteries, temples, and ancient brick structures. Entry fees are affordable: around ₹40 for Indian visitors and ₹400 for foreigners. Facilities such as drinking water, restrooms, and clear pathways are available. With its calm atmosphere, it is ideal for history enthusiasts, photography, or a relaxed family outing. If you are travelling through Bihar, Nalanda is an absolute must‑see to connect with India’s rich educational and culturalRead More

A truly unforgettable experience. Visiting the Ruins of Nalanda University felt like stepping into one of the greatest chapters of human history. Walking through the ancient monasteries, temples, lecture halls, and student residences gives you a glimpse of what was once one of the world's finest centres of learning. The site is well maintained, peaceful, and perfect for anyone interested in history, archaeology, Buddhism, or Indian heritage. The information boards across the complex help visitors understand the significance of the structures, making the visit even more meaningful. If you're in Bihar, this place is a must-visit. It is not just a historical monument but a reminder of India's rich intellectual and cultural legacy. I would also recommend visiting the nearby Nalanda Archaeological Museum to gain a deeper understanding of the site's remarkable past.Read More
