Group Of Monuments Hampi

Group of Monuments at Hampi, Hampi

About

The Group of Monuments is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, reflecting the cultural and architectural achievements of the Vijayanagara Empire from the 14th to 16th centuries C.E. The landscape contains temples, mandapas, palatial remains and civic structures that illustrate the scale and sophistication of one of South Asia’s greatest medieval capitals.

Historical Background

Hemakuta hill preserves early Rashtrakuta and pre Vijayanagara shrines, along with the monolithic Kadalekalu and Sasivekalu Ganeshas and the Vishnupad Temple. The Virupaksha Temple, the spiritual centre of Hampi, features a tall eastern gopura, painted rangamandapa and layered patronage. Nearby are the Nandi and the Achyutraya Temple with its twin courtyards. Within the royal zone, the Hazara Ramachandra Temple narrates the Ramayana, while the Mahanavami Dibba, King’s Audience Hall and the Zenana Enclosure with its Lotus Mahal reveal courtly and ceremonial life.

Location and Significance

Located in Karnataka along the Tungabhadra River, Hampi represents a blend of sacred, artistic and urban tradition.

Architectural Materials and Design

Major temples include the Krishna Temple, the Pattabhirama Temple and the Vittala Temple, noted for its stone chariot, musical pillars and richly carved mandapas. These structures demonstrate advanced spatial planning and the creative innovations of the Vijayanagara artisans.
