Hills Of Nagarjunkonda With Ancient Remains

Nagarjuna Hill, Pullareddigudem

About

Nagarjunakonda, or Nagarjuna’s Hill, on the right bank of the Krishna River, forms part of the Nallamala ranges. Believed to be associated with the celebrated Buddhist philosopher Nagarjuna, the site represents a major center of Buddhist learning and religious practice, although no archaeological evidence confirms his residence.

Historical Background

Several monuments were relocated to the hill due to the submergence caused by the Nagarjunasagar Dam. These include the Mahāstupa, originally containing a bone relic of the Buddha, the Bodhisiri Chaitya built in the 3rd century C.E. for monks from Sri Lanka, a bathing ghat from the early centuries C.E., the Asvamedha complex with a stepped tank, and two large monastic establishments identified as the University of Nagarjunakonda, one providing separate accommodation for female disciples with double Chaitya Griha.

Location and Significance

Situated on Nagarjuna’s Hill along the Krishna River in Andhra Pradesh, the site preserves relocated Buddhist monuments and reflects the early propagation of Buddhist philosophy in South India. It is a key heritage site illustrating religious, educational, and ritual practices of ancient India.

Architectural Materials and Design

The monuments are constructed using stone and lime plaster, incorporating apsidal shrines, stupas, monastic cells, and ceremonial tanks. The complex showcases early Buddhist architectural forms, including chaitya grihas, viharas, and ritual bathing structures, highlighting both functional and religious considerations.
