Qutub Minar

Qutub Minar, New Delhi

About

The Qutub Complex is a collection of historic structures that span from the Sultanate to the British period. Its most prominent monument is the Qutub Minar, the tallest stone tower in India.

Historical Background

Qutb ud Din Aibak initiated the construction of the Minar and completed the first storey between 1192 and 1210 C.E. Iltutmish added the next three storeys during his reign from 1211 to 1236 C.E. After lightning damage in 1326 C.E., Firoz Shah Tughlaq rebuilt the fourth storey and added a fifth between 1325 and 1388 C.E.

Location and Significance

Set within Mehrauli’s historic landscape, the complex reflects Delhi’s long urban and political evolution through several dynastic phases.

Architectural Materials and Design

The Minar’s fluted stories, projecting balconies and inscriptional bands create a strong vertical rhythm. The Iron Pillar in the courtyard of the Quwwat ul Islam Mosque carries a Sanskrit inscription linked to Chandragupta II of the Gupta Dynasty and is known for its corrosion resistant wrought iron. Surrounding structures include the Alai Darwaza, the Alai Minar, a madrasa and several tombs that highlight changing architectural styles.
