About the Monument
Shaniwar Wada is a major historical monument built in the early 18th century, it was regarded as one of the finest palace complexes of its time in the Deccan and remains a symbol of the Maratha Empire.
Historical Background
Construction began when Peshwa Bajirao laid the foundation on saturday, 10 January 1730 C.E., and was completed in 1732 C.E., with a housewarming performed on another saturday, giving rise to the name Shaniwar Wada. It served as the principal seat of the Peshwa rulers until 1818 C.E. The complex originally contained several palaces and gardens but was severely damaged by fires in 1791, 1794 and 1827 C.E. The surviving structures continue to reflect its former grandeur.
Location and Significance
Located in the city of Pune, Shaniwar Wada stands as a symbol of Maratha power and identity. Its ruins attract visitors who seek insight into the political and cultural history of the region.
Architectural Materials and Design
The fortification includes massive ramparts, gateways, bastions and the remains of palatial structures. Though much of the original complex is lost, the surviving layout reveals the scale, organisation and architectural ambition of the Peshwa era.
