About the Monument

Built by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj Mahal stands as an enduring symbol of eternal love. Recognized globally for its beauty and historical significance, the monument was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983 and is also celebrated as one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Historical Background

Its construction began around late 1631 or early 1632 and continued for about 12 years. Thousands of artisans were involved, and the project cost nearly Rs. 50 lakhs, which was significant for its time.

Location and Significance

Located in Agra on the right bank of the Yamuna River, The Taj Mahal is one of the most important cultural and historical symbols of India. It is also listed among the New Seven Wonders of the World.

The Mausoleum

The Main Mausoleum represents the zenith of the complex, defined by its perfect symmetry and the rhythmic interplay of solids and voids. It displays the exquisite marble cenotaphs of the Emperor and his consort, encased in delicate pietra dura artistry. Its peculiarity lies in the marble’s chameleon-like ability to change hues with the sun, symbolizing the varying moods of the Emperor’s grief.

Core Chamber and Symbolism

The cenotaphs of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal lie beneath the central dome. The monument symbolizes eternal love and is a masterpiece of Mughal architecture that blends Persian, Islamic, and Indian styles.

Architectural Materials and Design

The Taj Mahal’s main mausoleum is built of white marble that shifts with daylight, while surrounding red sandstone structures add contrast. Its surfaces feature pietra dura inlay with semi precious stones forming intricate patterns. The precision, symmetry, and refined ornamentation make it an unparalleled masterpiece.
