About the Monument

Aguada Fort is a major example of Portuguese architecture in India. Built between 1608 and 1612 C.E., it was named Aguada, meaning water in Portuguese, after the freshwater stream within the fort that supplied potable water to passing ships.

Historical Background

The fort was constructed to defend the Portuguese stronghold in Goa from Maratha and Dutch forces. Its strategic position at the confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Mandovi River made it a prized military base. The fort is divided into an upper section, which served as a defensive fort and watering station, and a lower section that provided a safe berth for Portuguese ships.

Location and Significance

Located in Candolim in North Goa, Aguada Fort overlooks the Arabian Sea, the fort remains a landmark of Goa’s colonial history and commemorates the region’s freedom fighters. It continues to draw visitors for its sea views and historical importance.

Architectural Materials and Design

The fort’s layout includes ramparts, storage areas and the water system that gave the monument its name. Its robust design reflects Portuguese engineering adapted to the Goan coastline.
