An age-gap romance and family feel-good film told in typical Girish A.D. style — Bethlehem Kudumba Unit can be summarised as such, but it is also more than that. It is a character study, and Justin leaves a lasting impression, as does Ashley. They are not just two people in love; they have layers. While a lot is glossed over towards the end, the idea is conveyed through nuanced scenes, dialogues and side characters.
Ashley and her family move to Karukutti from Mundakkayam and become Justin's neighbours. A man over 30, Justin is unmarried but much loved in his locality. Ashley falls for him. What happens next, and whether this unlikely pairing will make it to the end, is the question.
The film is slow to pick up, with the build-up to the rather intense second half taking its time. The jokes don't always land, but it is still a good first half. The second half, however, is hilarious and loud. Shyam Mohan's performance adds considerably to the elevation in the latter half.
It is a slice-of-life story, very familiar in its broad strokes, but what elevates it is the style of making, and Girish A.D. deserves credit for that. Co-writers Girish A.D. and Kiran Josey have done excellent work with the writing. Even though audiences have seen many emotionally manipulative mothers and meddlesome uncles, there is a freshness in the presentation that comes from how these familiar characters are woven into the rest of the film. One of the most remarkable scenes is the actual confession, followed later by Shyam Mohan's entry during the film screening.
Ajmal Sabu's cinematography captures the film in all its conceived beauty, even with the many scenes where characters look at each other through windows or find themselves inside rooms and other enclosed spaces. Akash Joseph Varghese's editing is a standout, while Vishnu Vijay's music brings all the right cosy feelings.
Nivin Pauly makes Justin unforgettable, and his combinations with Sangeeth Prathap and Suresh Krishna work well. Mamitha Baiju is steady and strong as Ashley. The ensemble supporting cast plays its part well.
Naturally, the film has its flaws, but as a feel-good romance, it is well made and a perfect Onam release. The climax lands well, allowing the audience to leave the theatre with a light heart.

There are films that make you fall in love with love. There are films that make you fall in love with cinema. And then there are films that feel like a warm hug. Director Girish AD’s Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is one such film — full of little moments, innocence, laughter and heart.

Ashley (Mamitha Baiju), her parents and her brother Alan move into a new home opposite Justin’s (Nivin Pauly) in Ernakulam. Justin is the kind of man the entire neighbourhood loves because he is always there for everyone. He runs a catering business and also produces his brother Joel’s (Sangeeth Prathap) short films. Still sad about leaving the home she grew up in, Ashley looks out of her new window and catches sight of Justin seemingly threatening a man. It is hardly the first impression you'd expect of the neighbourhood's favourite guy.
As Ashley slowly warms up to the tight-knit neighbourhood, she develops a liking for Justin, who is 12-13 years older than her. Can they find their happily ever after despite the age gap, her strict parents and the complications that come with it? Girish AD answers that question over two hours and 37 minutes.

Girish AD’s films are realistic, rooted and often cutesy romantic dramas, but what sets them apart are the micro-details he brings to his supporting characters and the worlds they inhabit. Much like Premalu, which helped Mamitha rise to fame, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit has a group of characters who make us believe that there is still hope in the world.

Nivin Pauly’s Justin is an empathetic man who has gone through a loss. He has been in the pits of darkness and perhaps that’s why he is always there for everyone else. He is a good son, friend, brother and, eventually, the kind of boyfriend anyone would be lucky to have. Mamitha’s Ashley, meanwhile, is young, brimming with joy and unafraid to express her love, even if it is with a little nudge. Despite the age gap, their romance never feels forced. They simply make it look easy. Ever seen a couple who just seem right for each other? That’s them.

Justin and Ashley aren’t the kind of couple who share mushy dialogues or constantly hold hands. They are companions who talk about everything under the sun, show up for each other and, most importantly, make each other’s lives easier. Their journey isn’t a bed of roses either. They are aware of the age gap, Ashley’s strict parents and her studies. Justin brings his maturity to the relationship, balancing out Ashley’s youthful exuberance.

Nivin Pauly’s vulnerability makes Justin so endearing. He feels like the kind of person everyone needs around them — especially on the days when you cannot be there for yourself. That’s when Justin would swoop in. Mamitha Baiju is on a roll. Last week, she starred in Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons, which also dealt with an age-gap relationship. Yet the two performances feel remarkably different. Mamitha brings enough personality to Ashley to make her more than just the younger woman in an age-gap romance, and her performance adds to the film’s warmth.

But Bethlehem Kudumba Unit isn’t only interested in whether Justin and Ashley will end up together. The film is also interested in the walls people build around themselves through grief, fear, social expectations and the need to conform. Its supporting characters are often dealing with their own versions of these mental blocks, and Girish AD gently allows them to find their way out rather than turning their problems into grand dramatic conflicts. It is this attention to the little emotional battles that gives the film its warmth.
Roshan Shanavas (of Aavesham fame), Shyam Mohan and a bunch of eccentric supporting characters keep the laughs coming. The comic timing is so impeccable that looking away for even a moment could mean missing a terrific reaction or counter. The humour rarely feels forced because it comes organically from the personalities of these characters.

Cinematographer Ajmal Sabu’s work brings Kerala alive on screen and makes the setting feel like another character in the story. A rom-com like Bethlehem Kudumba Unit also needs music that can carry its emotional and romantic beats, and Vishnu Vijay delivers one of the film’s strongest technical assets, mixing lilting melodies with nostalgic tracks that complement its warmth.

What makes Bethlehem Kudumba Unit work is that it never feels like it is desperately trying to be a feel-good film. It finds joy in ordinary conversations, awkward encounters, eccentric neighbours and the simple act of showing up for someone. The romance between Justin and Ashley is at the centre of it, but the film’s real charm lies in the larger community it creates around them.

This Onam, Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju gift us a fuzzy little film that is all heart. Bethlehem Kudumba Unit may not reinvent the romantic comedy, but it understands something more important: sometimes, a film doesn't need to be revolutionary. It just needs to make you leave the theatre feeling a little lighter.

One of the major issues plaguing our age-gap romance films is that they all carry an obvious trace of creepiness. They are mostly crafted to satisfy the male audience and their fantasies, or those who blindly adhere to patriarchal conventions. As a result, most of the male lead’s questionable actions in such movies are glossed over, sugar-coated, or overlooked, and even the visibly problematic aspects of the story are whitewashed with the nonsensical adage, “all is fair in love and war.”
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit revolves around a couple, Justin (Nivin Pauly) and Ashley (Mamitha Baiju), with a noticeable age difference between them. However, the brilliance of director Girish AD and co-writer Kiran Josey — joining forces after Premalu (2024) — is that we never feel any creepiness in the movie. That doesn’t mean Bethlehem Kudumba Unit sweeps the age-gap factor under the carpet and pretends it doesn’t exist. In fact, the maturity and clarity with which the subject has been handled is what, in my opinion, makes this romantic comedy absolutely heartwarming, endearing, and sweet.
After selling their old house in Mundakayam, Ashley and her family relocate to a residential area in Karukutty, a more urban locality. Next door live Justin and his family, including his younger brother Joyal (Sangeeth Prathap). Justin is the neighbourhood’s trusted hand. Whether it’s arranging food for an event, as he runs a catering business, or getting gadgets fixed, he is the go-to person for pretty much everything. One could even say that he is the local superstar. And he is unmarried, despite having crossed Indian society’s “acceptable age” to settle down.

Ashley, who was heartbroken about leaving her native village, slowly starts building a new life in the new neighbourhood and gradually develops an affection for Justin. Although romance wasn’t on his list until then, mainly due to a past personal tragedy, he eventually falls in love with her. However, they have to keep their relationship a secret, as they know their families won’t agree to it easily. But one day, the secret slips out.

There is not a single dull moment in Bethlehem Kudumba Unit! It’s not that the movie lacks emotional moments; there are a few. However, even those scenes are crafted in such a delicate manner that they only stir one’s emotions and, at most, make the eyes well up slightly. Girish doesn’t aim to make people cry a river. He could have, but he doesn’t.

He is extremely clear about what he wants to achieve, and he never takes his eyes off the target. Girish’s sole aim with the film seems to be to ensure that a smile remains on each viewer’s face throughout and, even when the moments get a bit emotional, to give them hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel. I honestly can’t remember the last time I left a theatre feeling so heart-warmed, and I am sure that will be the case for many others.
The biggest draw of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, like any other Girish movie, is its relatability. From start to finish, the romantic comedy feels like a breath of fresh air. Set in familiar surroundings, pretty much everything the movie depicts has either happened in our lives or we’ve seen happen in the life of someone we know, in one way or another. Whether it’s the marriage conversation aimed at Justin during a school reunion, Joyal’s “struggles” with amateur short filmmaking, or the hardships Justin and Ashley face in keeping their relationship a secret, the romantic comedy’s moments and plot points resonate easily.
One of the brilliances of Girish films is that they make us chuckle without trying desperately. His scripts rarely beg for a laugh or feature moments just to liven things up. As in Premalu, Girish and Kiran Josey have succeeded in extracting organic humour from existing, relevant situations here as well. The jokes aren’t on-the-nose or obvious one-liners; instead, they are woven into the dialogues and moments, making them inseparable from the story and drawing us further into the narrative.

These days, many filmmakers have developed a lazy habit of filling gaps in their scripts with popular memes without giving it much thought. A notable recent example is director Arun Anirudhan’s Athiradi (2026). Girish’s films, including Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, are a masterclass in showing how to integrate such elements neatly and effectively, without any of them coming across as artificial.
For instance, when he’s in the director’s chair, Joyal shouts “Ayyappa” instead of “action,” which is a reference to the social media laughingstock film Hero (2012). Bethlehem Kudumba Unit features several such references that only add to the film’s charm.

Although both are romantic comedies at their core, Girish’s treatment of the Nivin Pauly-Mamitha Baiju starrer differs significantly from Premalu. Even though Mamitha is the female lead in both movies, there isn’t even a single shade of Premalu’s Reenu in Ashley, for which kudos to the actor and the makers.

As mentioned at the start, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit isn’t one of those creepy age-gap romance films where the hero psychologically manipulates a younger girl into falling for him while the makers slyly gloss over the grooming. The film never shows Justin doing anything to specifically attract her or win her heart. He simply exists as a sweetheart, living his life without disturbing anyone. As he later tells Joyal, Ashley fell in love with him because she felt he had a solid personality that no other man in the locality did.

Ashley is also not naive; she knows her feelings for him and everything around her, too. Theirs isn’t a love-at-first-sight. One of the reasons she falls for him is that he understands her and her likes better than anyone else, including her family. For instance, before revealing that the girls’ band she was once part of was called “Room 17,” Ashley asks Justin not to make fun of it. He not only doesn’t mock her, but genuinely appreciates the name and saves her contact under that name in his phone.
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit builds the romance beautifully using such small, simple moments. That’s why, when they finally admit their love for each other, it becomes one of the most beautiful interval blocks in recent Malayalam cinema. It’s not presented as a revolutionary moment, but since love is inherently revolutionary, so is this one.

However, the movie doesn’t show everyone and everything as pitch-perfect. From Justin facing unfair marriage pressure from his family to Ashley’s mother emotionally blackmailing and manipulating her to sever her relationship with Justin, and her uncle, Alex (Vinay Forrt), adding fuel to the fire by pretending to be the family’s patriarch — since they all consider Ashley’s father to be an incapable man — Bethlehem Kudumba Unit subtly explores the different shades in the characters and locality well.

Although the movie’s climax is heartening, it could have been improved without everything coming across as overtly convenient. Yes, the conversations are cute and funny, but somehow they feel scripted rather than organic; and that’s the only instance I felt that way.

A Nivin Pauly-Mamitha Baiju magic!
There’s something in Nivin Pauly that none of his peers has: the ability to make us believe in and appreciate the beauty of little things. Only his movies (the good ones, obviously) and performances can do that. I am glad that Malayalam cinema has at least him in his generation, who doesn’t desperately try to be a “pan-India” star and churn out mindless star vehicles only to fail miserably. And I sincerely hope he never changes.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit proves that Mamitha Baiju looks best and delivers her finest performances in familiar settings and relatable appearances. Her portrayal of Ashley also made me realise how poor her makeup and presentation were in Jana Nayagan. All the other actors, particularly Vettukili Prakash as Justin’s father, are simply brilliant.
Composer Vishnu Vijay has delivered yet another solid soundtrack after Premalu, and the background music is nothing short of stunning. Ajmal Sabu’s cinematography also deserves special commendation for delivering one of the year’s most heartwarming cinematic experiences.

Unpacking double standards surrounding age-gap romances
However, Bethlehem Kudumba Unit also made me wonder: would our society, still carrying all the dirty remnants of patriarchy, be so openly willing to accept a story — be it in real life or on screen — where a woman romances a significantly younger man, without people passing lewd comments at them? Will parents be ready to take their children to such a movie and leave the theatre calling the experience “heartwarming,” or will they quickly label the film unsuitable for the little ones because it tries to “mislead” them?

I think we all know the answer. Therefore, it’s impossible not to mention that a story like that of Bethlehem Kudumba Unit will be considered a “romantic comedy” only when the age difference is shown as it is in this film, and if the roles are reversed, it might end up being dubbed an experimental movie or, worse, a softcore film.

Have you ever had a moment where a movie features a scene that instantly connects with you, making you hope that you end up loving the whole film just for having that one sequence?

For me, that happened in Bethlehem Kudumba Unit when Nivin Pauly's character played the song Yavanakathayil from the unreleased Malayalam film Anna, a favourite under-rated track of mine.

Not only does the song play again during a soft romantic moment and pop up in a cute banter, but I am also glad to say I ended up genuinely liking Girish AD's delightful new romcom.

Cute Neighbourly Love
Bethlehem Kudumba Unit actually takes a slight deviation from the usual Girish AD playbook, starting off on a sombre note. Our heroine, Ashley (Mamitha Baiju) has returned home after two years of studying in Ireland, and she is clearly unhappy.

When her parents mention attending their neighbour's wedding, she looks at that house wistfully, instantly telling us she has dealt with a heartbreak and the reason is next door.

Thankfully, for those expecting trademark Girish AD humour, it does not take long to get into the laughs, smiles and sweetness.

Save for the prologue and the climax, the rest of the film is set two years in the past, when Ashley and her family move to a new colony in Angamaly for her studies.

Ashley is initially upset about leaving her old home and friends, but she quickly finds her footing and makes new acquaintances. She also attracts the attention of the resident Casanova, Glikson (Roshan Shanavas).

However, it is her next-door neighbour, Justin (Nivin Pauly), who becomes the target of Ashley's immediate crush. Justin is a bachelor in his late 30s with a strong aversion to marriage. He runs a catering service, produces short films for his younger brother Joel (Sangeeth Pratap), and is well-liked by the colony residents.

Justin soon finds out that Ashley likes him. While he is initially both conflicted and fascinated, they quickly enter a secret romantic relationship hidden from the prying eyes of their families and neighbours.

Girish AD's Signature Humour and Charm
If you are expecting an enjoyable, light-hearted ride like Girish AD's previous outings Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, Super Sharanya, and Premalu, I am pretty sure you will not be disappointed with Bethlehem Kudumba Unit.

The director has a knack for finding humour in everyday interactions, using his cast's comic timing effectively to make even the simplest comeback sound utterly hilarious.

While I generally feel that using social media references for humour is a surefire way for a movie to age poorly, Girish somehow manages to make them click. It is certainly a fun challenge to catch all the movie references and parallels, with the script playfully nodding to everything from viral trolled scenes in Hero ("Ayyappa!", "Kettopozhe charge aayi!") to Kantara's transformation scene (the same scene also reminded me of Nerariyan CBI, so I want to believe the director went with both references).

Every supporting character gets their moment to shine, be it Glikson's desperate attempts to woo Ashley, Baiju's (Suresh Krishna) ridiculously dated ideas, or the Moreli sisters and their drunken sleepover.

A Sweet Central Romance
Right in the middle of all this fun sits a sweet and likeable central romance. It develops smoothly without excessive dramatics, anchored by the tremendous chemistry between Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju that take no notice of their age-gap.

Interestingly, Mamitha starred in another age-gap romance just a week prior in the Tamil film Vishwanath And Sons. In that enjoyable feel-good entertainer, the hero was similarly adamant about avoiding marriage due to past baggage.

And yet, Mamitha's character and the overall approach to the romance are quite different here. Sure, both Maddy (her role in Vishwanath and Sons) and Ashley are unapologetic about falling for an older guy. But while Maddy was vivacious and spunky, Ashley is a literal girl-next-door who just happens to be incredibly confident about her feelings and is wary of her family.

Her attraction to Justin is also far more spontaneous, starting with Justin being the very first person she spots outside her new bedroom window, followed by the discovery that he shares her love for an under-rated band (The Breeders).

This circles back to my opening point about sharing a love with the movie for that Anna song. Sometimes, one tiny connection is all you need to develop something much deeper. The screenplay by Girish AD and Kiran Josey pulls this off beautifully.

Every moment between Ashley and Justin is charming and adorable, with my absolute favourite being the car sequence where Ashley finally gets Justin to reciprocate her feelings.

Pacing and Technical Brilliance
The second half also packs in quite a few sweet moments as the couple tries to hide their romance from the neighbourhood. However, there is a slight dip in momentum, and it is surprisingly not due to the inevitable serious turn when people find out. That reveal is handled with just the right amount of tension without spilling into melodrama, and the love story wraps up neatly in a highly winsome manner.

The pacing issues actually stem from a couple of sub-tracks. While they have their funny moments, they drag the proceedings down a bit. Take the problems Joel faces from his girlfriend's brother (a track that might incense some religiously warped minds) and the chaos that ensues that even dips into physical comedy. Or that song sequence in Goa that heavily reminded me of the Telangana Bommalu stretch in Premalu.

Except, instead of Sachin and Aadhi competing for Reenu's affection, we get Ashley's nosy uncle Alex (Vinay Forrt) suspiciously hovering around, trying to figure out if something is going on between her and her older neighbour.

These aren't bad portions, and I laughed plenty here too, but there should have been a couple of snips here and there to streamline these proceedings a bit more.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit also shines in its technical department. Ajmal Sabu's cinematography lends a warm, vibrant quality to every frame, enjoyably elevated by Vishnu Vijay's catchy score. While the songs are certainly pleasant, I will wait and see if they grow on me quite like his work in Premalu did.

Editor Akash Joseph Varghese brings in a few stylish flourishes without ever going overboard. I particularly loved the use of a montage in the climax that gives Justin some clarity when he is faced with a dilemma.

Enjoyable Performances From Whole Cast
As for the performances, it is a winning show all around. Between Sarvam Maya and this film, and all the misfires in between, I do not think Nivin Pauly is going to step out of the feel-good zone anytime soon.

It is a space where he commands a massive fanbase, and he is also clearly having a blast here. We get to see his old spark return, making us laugh with witty comebacks and sneaky, blushing glances.

When genre detours fail, it is always better to stick to the tried and tested. This formula is working wonders for him right now, and we are more than happy to enjoy this charming side of his performance again and again.

Mamitha Baiju is on an absolute roll, delivering back-to-back confident performances while effortlessly matching, and occasionally outshining, her veteran co-star. I absolutely loved her performance in the climax, where she confronts Justin at the wedding about his true feelings.

I am glad I do not need to single out the supporting cast because Suresh Krishna, Sangeeth Pratap, Roshan Shanavas, Srindaa, Shameer Khan, Meenakshi Raveendran, Shyam Mohan, Parvathy Ayyappadas, Jazar Clicks, and Vettukili Prakash are all thoroughly entertaining in their respective parts. While I also enjoyed Vinay Forrt's performance, knowing how incredibly talented he is, I felt there is a certain stagnation that is coming in how he is approaching comedy roles these days.

No doubt about it, this Onam has only one clear winner, and that is Girish AD all over again!

When one thinks of Nivin Pauly and romance, one immediately thinks of his 2015 coming-of-age romantic cult classic, Premam. However, with director Girish AD's Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, the Malayalam star returns to a more understated kind of romance - one that's rooted in everyday relationships, family dynamics and the small moments that make love vulnerable and believable.

What makes Girish AD films stand out is how he takes familiar genres and situations and puts regular, flawed and yet recognisable characters in them. The director is drawn to slice-of-life stories and Bethlehem Kudumba Unit is no different, finding humour and warmth - along with their quirks and complexities - in ordinary people.

In Bethlehem Kudumba Unit, the story begins in Mundakayam (Kerala) where Ashley (Mamitha Baiju) lives with her family. Her parents' sudden decision to shift to Ernakulam means she has to say goodbye not just to her college friends and music band but also her old textbooks, cassettes and other knickknacks she has held on to since childhood.
Carrying her cherished memories, she moves to Ernakulam with a heavy heart and no matter what, doesn't seem to find real joy in anything. But her neighbours - she soon finds out - are very interesting people. While in the opposite house, the three Morelli sisters keep the surroundings lively, next door it is brothers Justin (Nivin Pauly) and Joel (Sangeeth Pratap) who make the area more happening.

It's when her laptop conks off that she gets a formal introduction to Justin who is in his mid-30s and yet single. College-going Ashley is intrigued by singleton Justin and it's through awkward conversations that an unlikely romance takes shape between two people with a significant age gap. But do Justin and Ashley get their happily-ever-after despite social norms and societal pressures? The film explores this question without turning their romance into a conventional love story nor making it a mockery of their age gap.

Director Girish AD has chosen to explore romance through the lens of an age gap, a much-needed subject in an industry that often limits romantic relationships to conventional pairings. He doesn't rush into telling us a story of a great cinematic romance but unpeels it layer by layer through the couple's awkward encounters and small moments in their daily lives as neighbours. The two main characters are never shown to desperately try to prove themselves because of their age gap and that's a big relief for the audience.

The director is most comfortable in the details and every character in the various families, friends and neighbourhood is highly relatable and takes the story forward. Most of these characters have eccentricities that are touched upon making them more endearing while adding humour to the film. He has also etched out the character arcs of Justin and Ashley beautifully, giving both characters enough depth while they navigate their own feelings. In fact, Girish AD has created a small social world for the audience using these various characters making us feel as though we are inhabiting it rather than simply watching a story unfold on screen. And that's what makes this film a delight to watch.

Nivin Pauly as Justin is remarkable because he encapsulates the character's vulnerability, charm and awkwardness effortlessly. Justin isn't perfect either - for instance, Justin loves his drink and enjoys hanging out with friends his age at the bar whenever he gets the chance. And it's in moments like these that Nivin brings out Justin's easy-going nature along with possibly conveying his loneliness which he covers with a happy-go-lucky exterior. The Malayalam actor has a flair for natural comic timing and in Bethlehem Kudumba Unit he aces it.

What makes the entire relationship work is the charming on-screen chemistry between him and Mamitha Baiju - and this is one of the biggest strengths of the film. Interestingly, this is the second film of Mamitha Baiju's in recent weeks where we see the actor romancing a middle-aged man (the other being Vishwanath & Sons). The young actress proves yet again why she has struck a chord with audiences. She is a natural performer, bringing an effortless ease and spontaneity to her role which is what makes the relationship believable. The supporting cast deserves credit for this film as well as each of them have elevated the film with their presence.

There is a warmth that runs through Bethlehem Kudumba Unit and it embraces you completely. Director Girish AD has shown us once again how ordinary people can be so interesting and live such rich lives filled with love, friendship, flaws and little joys. And Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju make us believe that romance doesn't always have to conform to convention - it's just about two people who love each other.
