Nahas Hidhayath doesn’t make a simple film with I’m Game. Instead, he attempts to turn Dulquer Salmaan’s return to Malayalam cinema into a full-blown entertainer — and whether that gamble pays off commercially remains to be seen. What we get is a supernatural mass entertainer, complete with twists, turns, humour, action and a generous dose of cinematic whimsy.
At the centre of it is Dan John (Dulquer Salmaan), an affluent man who spends his days chasing thrills and money. Suave, arrogant and thoroughly unlikeable at first, Dan is hardly a conventional hero. He doesn’t undergo a dramatic transformation either, but the film eventually makes some sense of his worldview when he admits that everyone has a past they are not proud of. Dulquer is convincing as Dan and single-handedly carries the rather entertaining first half.
The story takes us into the murky world of cricket betting while unapologetically embracing Dan’s selfish streak. His life takes an unexpected turn following an accident and a transplant, after which strange things begin to unfold. How these seemingly disconnected events come together forms the crux of the film.
The supernatural thread is where I’m Game becomes particularly whimsical. There is a deliberately slapstick quality to several sequences, which works well within the film’s heightened world. Jakes Bejoy’s background score further elevates these moments, especially when the film leans into its larger-than-life treatment.
Kayadu Lohar plays the female lead, and her equation with Dan is anything but conventionally professional from the beginning. Cinematic liberties aside, though, the choice of profession used to bring her character closer to the protagonist feels rather odd and sticks out.
Antony Varghese plays Vignesh, a cricketer, and the film builds up considerable anticipation around his character. His introduction itself feels somewhat underwhelming, but Antony soon settles into the role and takes command of his portions, delivering a commendable performance.
While I’m Game explores the consequences of betting and the idea of karma and revenge, it also gives its protagonist an unapologetically anti-heroic streak without becoming overly moralising. Instead, the film shows the consequences of Dan’s choices rather than preaching about them.
Jimshi Khalid’s cinematography and Chaman Chacko’s editing help sustain the film’s heightened supernatural mood while keeping pace with its many tonal shifts. However, the nearly three-hour runtime begins to show in the second half, where the film experiences some noticeable lags.
The supporting cast includes Mysskin, Kathir and Vinay Forrt. There is also an Asif Ali cameo, thrown in purely for 'fun'. Among the action portions, the single-handed fight sequences stand out for their choreography. The entire stretch involving Dan and ‘Vignesh’ in Dan’s flat is also effectively staged.
Ultimately, I’m Game may not always be as slick or seamless as it wants to be, and several developments conveniently fall into place. Yet, it manages to stay away from feeling like just another formulaic mass entertainer. It is messy, excessive and occasionally wonderfully weird — but there is enough fun packed into the ride to make it worthwhile. The post-credit scenes neatly tie things together.
