“Ek tarfa pyaar ki taaqat kuch aur hoti hai.” Luv Ranjan’s Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar (PPDB) revisits the familiar territory of first love, unresolved crushes and second chances. Blending nostalgia, youthful confusion and the possibility of rekindling unfinished romances, the film explores what happens when the past gets another shot at the present. However, despite its appealing premise and flashes of humour, predictable writing prevents it from matching the wit and charm of Ranjan’s earlier romantic comedies.
The film follows three school friends — Gautam Govind Sharma (Sparsh Walia), Vedant Rawat (Kunal Vaid) and Shivi Pradhan (Sargun Kaur Luthra) — who escape their monotonous corporate lives for a school reunion in Mussoorie. There, they encounter their former crushes: Gehna Gundecha (Alisha Chopra), Simran Sandhu (Sakshi Vaidya) and Karan Shergill (Tushar Chhibber). As old feelings resurface, the trio confronts unresolved emotions and the possibility of rekindling their first love. Who finds a partner and who returns to a lonely corporate routine forms the crux of the story.
Directed by debutant Anuj Saini and written by Luv Ranjan, Jehan Handa and Saini, the film explores Gen Z relationships through familiar rom-com tropes. While the premise offers relatable moments, the first half takes too long to find its footing. The narrative picks up in the second half when the trio’s plan to confess their feelings to their school-time crushes backfires, triggering amusing complications. However, predictable turns limit the film’s emotional impact.
Unlike Ranjan’s Pyaar Ka Punchnama films and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, this outing lacks the sharp humour, engaging conflicts and memorable characters that made those films entertaining. Its portrayal of young relationships occasionally feels formulaic, although the witty, contemporary dialogues add freshness and should resonate with younger audiences.
The six debutants bring promising energy to their roles. Sparsh Walia stands out with his confident screen presence, while Sargun Kaur Luthra impresses with her assured performance. The trio’s easy camaraderie is among the film’s strengths, with their friendship feeling more convincing than some of the romantic developments. Kunal Vaid, Alisha Chopra, Sakshi Vaidya and Tushar Chhibber also contribute to the film’s lively atmosphere. Rajkummar Rao, meanwhile, steals the show with his cameo, which pays a playful tribute to Shah Rukh Khan’s iconic Ek Tarfa Pyaar dialogue and offers an ode to Channa Mereya.
The soundtrack features several hummable numbers, including Jubin Nautiyal’s Pyaar Manga Hai Tumhi Se, Arijit Singh’s Purane Din and Heer’s Zulmi. However, none leaves a lasting impression. At 142 minutes, the film feels stretched, despite maintaining a light-hearted, youthful tone.
PPDB captures the uncertainties of Gen Z romance through relatable situations, witty dialogue and promising newcomers, but its conventional storytelling keeps it from hitting the right notes. It may rekindle memories of your first love or childhood crush, but this is one romance that’s better experienced once than revisited.

School reunions on screen are built on a familiar formula: heavy nostalgia, unrequited teenage crushes, and second chances at love. Director Anuj Saini’s Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar opens on a relatable note with three best friends — Gautam (Sparsh Walia), Vedant (Kunal Vaid), and Shivi (Sargun Kaur Luthra). Trapped in the corporate grind of targets and promotions while watching their peers get married, the single trio heads to a school reunion camp to confront their childhood flames. What begins as a nostalgic escape quickly spirals into a whirlwind of modern dating chaos, relationship trials, and heartbreak.

Upon reaching the camp, each friend finds themselves entangled in distinct romantic dilemmas. Gautam, a shy and delusional romantic, reunites with his classmate Gehna (Alisha Chopra) — a commanding diva nursing a fresh heartbreak who dramatically laments, "Hot hona bhi bohot badi problem hai (Being hot is also such a huge problem)." After an intimate night, Gautam grows cold-footed as Gehna demands a lifelong commitment.

Simultaneously, Vedant confesses his long-held feelings to school topper Simran (Sakshi Vaidya), sparking a close bond until her fiance Vikesh (Gobind Singh Mehta) arrives to take her away for their upcoming wedding. Meanwhile, Shivi undergoes a dramatic makeover to attract her crush, serial womaniser Karan Shergill (Tushar Chhibber), exasperatedly declaring, "Cute bula diya usne mujhe, matlab friendzoned. Main cute banne aai hoon? Mujhe to sexy banna hai (He called me cute, which means I've been friendzoned! Did I come here to be cute? I want to be sexy!)." After their intimacy, Shivi walks away heartbroken, realising she developed unreciprocated emotional expectations. When the trio returns home nursing their romantic hangovers, their mission shifts into helping Vedant win back Simran before her wedding festivities wrap up.

Co-written by Luv Ranjan, Jehan Handa, and Anuj Saini, the script touches upon genuine youth issues — from work-life balance, Netflix and chill to commitment phobia, obsessive relationships and the normalisation of casual polygamy and the fear of unconditional romance. Their approach to modern dating resonates strongly with both Gen Z and Millennial audiences.

Refreshingly, the writers go a step further than previous Luv Ranjan staples like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, and Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar by refraining from placing the blame entirely on women. Despite a few tone-deaf lines scripted by them — such as "Kidnap karne se pehle ladki ki consent zaruri hoti hai, ladkon ki consent important nahin hoti (Before kidnapping, a girl's consent is mandatory, but a guy's consent doesn't matter)."— the film views romantic friction through the lens of individual emotional flaws rather than outright gender warfare.

Where the film genuinely stumbles is its reliance on an outdated daily-soap template. The incessant imposition of intrusive background scores over dialogues during comedic, emotional, or romantic scenes — coupled with over-the-top, artificially loud conversations to force enthusiasm — severely hampers the narrative's engagement quotient.
When the screenplay falters, the lead ensemble steps in to keep the narrative grounded. Sparsh Walia as Gautam and Kunal Vaid as Vedant share a strong, effortless camaraderie, paying a cinematic homage to Kartik Aaryan and Sunny Kaushal's bromance in Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Sparsh exhibits impressive range, balancing confusion, timidity, and comic timing with subtle nuances, while Kunal complements him well with his impressive screen presence.

However, it is Alisha Chopra and Sargun Kaur Luthra who truly dominate the screen. Alisha’s portrayal of the bubbly, unpredictable, yet intensely loyal Gehna breathes life into what could have easily devolved into a clumsy girlfriend stereotype, making her scenes with Sparsh genuinely engaging. Sargun is equally at ease anchored between her male friends, while sparking an intense, combustible chemistry opposite Tushar Chhibber, who holds his ground well as the charmingly relentless Karan Shergill.

Sakshi Vaidya offers a wonderfully understated performance as Simran — the only character spared from over-the-top antics — though the redundant writing fails to flesh out her role fully.

However, actor Rajkummar Rao's over-six-minute extended cameo as an ode to Channa Mereya and SRK's Ek Tarfa Pyaar steals the show.

Additionally, the soundtrack emerges as the film's strongest USP. Melodic tracks like Jubin Nautial's soothing Pyaar Maanga Hai Tum Hi Se and Darshan Rava, Shreya Jain's slice-of-life Jaane Kis Mod Pe bring genuine soul and warmth to an otherwise repetitive story.

Ultimately, Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar suffers from cliched narrative beats and redundant writing. Yet, buoyed by confident performances from its young cast and a soulful album, it manages to hold its ground. If glossy, modern relationship dramas with a fresh-faced ensemble align with your cinematic taste, this one makes for a breezy, one-time watch.

Is it Kartik Aaryan?'

'Doesn't she look like Sanya Malhotra?'

Throughout the film, these were the two thoughts that kept nagging me.

In Luv Ranjan's latest film, Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar, directed by Anuj Saini, he introduces six promising newcomers and attempts to recreate the magic and success of Pyaar Ka Punchnama (which, according to me, was a toxic, misogynistic film).

What's Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar About?
Three school buddies -- Vedant (Kunal Vaid), Gautam (Sparsh Walia) and Shivie (Sargun) -- decide to attend their school reunion to take one bold chance at their crushes and first loves.

Leaving behind their corporate mazdoor lives, each one dives straight into their love story, getting right to the point.

Set against the idyllic backdrop of Mussoorie, the trio experiences its own version of romance, from cute and charming to downright messy, with a dash of heartbreak and realisation.

Vedant falls for Simran (Sakshi Vaidya), the class topper, only to realise that she's engaged to Vikash.

Before Gautam can recover from an awkward, non-consensual first sexual encounter, his crush Gehna (Alisha Chopra) announces to the world that they are engaged.

Just when Shivie's desperate attempts to win over Karan (Tushar Chhibber) finally pays off, she realises that a commitment-phobic Romeo isn't her type.

But the moment Vedant decides to risk it all to give love a second chance, Gautam and Shivie are left with no choice but to play along and crash Simran's wedding.

What follows is a comedy of chaos and drama, with plenty of cute, entertaining, theatre-worthy moments.

Is Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar Worth Watching?
Neither the plot is new nor the ending. But unlike Pyaar Ka Punchnama, which was insensitive to its female cast as well as the audience, Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar allows its characters a little more room to breathe, express themselves and put forward their points of view.

Instead of encouraging and glorifying toxic relationships just because its your first love, here's a film that, for a change, lets its characters make mistakes and take accountability for their decisions.

What also works for the film is Rochak Kohli's music; Pyaar Maanga Hai and Purane Din are soulful to listen to.

As for the newcomers -- except for the fact that they all seem too perfect in the way they look and dress, even in their nightwear -- they all shine through with their respective performances, with Sparsh and Sargun leading the way.

Forget Kartik Aaryan, Sparsh Walia is the fresh face who can genuinely act, even without a monologue.

There are several scenes in the film, particularly, those involving Gehna and Gautam that will have an encore value purely because of their acting, even after you have left the theatre.

Pehla Pyaar Doosri Baar manages to rekindle the magic of first love and innocent crushes in a fun rom-com that you can enjoy with friends over the weekend, irrespective of your age.

Bringing to life the heartbeat of youth, golden memories of college days, and the sweet complexities of relationships, 'Pehli Pyaar Doosri Baar' is a refreshing and entertaining romantic comedy. Produced under the banner of Luv Films, this film not only brings smiles to faces through the reunion of old friends, but also proves that true feelings never change. With superb acting and excellent music, this film will appeal to audiences of all ages.
In today's fast-paced world, love, friendship, and the struggles of relationships have become a vital part of every young person's life. When these unspoken emotions are brought to life on screen with humor, romance, and cinematic magic, the experience becomes truly special. Director Anuj Saini's film "Pehla Pyar Doosri Baar" exudes exactly that vibe. Produced by Luv Ranjan and Ankur Garg under the banner of Luv Films, this film not only evokes nostalgia but also teaches us how beautiful a "second chance" can be in matters of life and the heart. Featuring a stellar cast including Alisha Chopra, Sparsh Walia, Sakshi Vaidya, Kunal Vaidya, Sargun Kaur Luthra, and Tushar Chhibber, the film offers a fresh and entertaining perspective on love relationships in today's generation. So, let's find out how the film fares in terms of story, acting, direction, and music in this detailed review.
The story
of "Pehli Pyar Doosri Baar" is deeply engaging and relatable to today's youth. The story begins at a school reunion held ten years after their school graduation. Three old close friends attend the reunion, still harboring feelings for their first crushes from their school days. They all meet with a special hope and a little trepidation that perhaps this time they will be able to express their feelings to the person they have loved for years. As the reunion progresses, this trip down memory lane turns into an unexpected and fun adventure. Many funny situations arise along the way, filled with misunderstandings and heartwarming moments. The film beautifully illustrates that even though time passes and people's careers or priorities change, first love and childhood innocence always remain safe in a corner of the heart. The story isn't limited to romance; it also emphasizes how, with maturity, a person can heal broken or incomplete relationships.
The film
's star cast is one of its biggest USPs. Alisha Chopra, Sparsh Walia, Sakshi Vaidya, Kunal Vaidya, Sargun Kaur Luthra, and Tushar Chhibber bring their youthful energy to life on screen. The naturalness with which these new-age actors portray their characters is commendable. No scene feels artificial. Instead, their chemistry and casual conversations feel completely genuine.
Kunal Vaid: With his impressive screen presence and charming demeanor, Kunal Vaid manages to keep the audience captivated. His comic and romantic style keeps the mood of the film light and cheerful.
Other co-stars: Alisha Chopra and Sparsh Walia display maturity in their emotional scenes, while Sakshi Vaidya, Sargun Kaur Luthra, and Tushar Chhibber add a unique touch to the film with their comic timing and friendly demeanor. The chemistry between all the actors is palpable on screen, allowing audiences to easily connect with their characters.
Director
Anuj Saini has taken the risk of presenting an age-old story (first love and reunion) in a completely modern and fresh way, and he has largely succeeded. Influenced by the style of Luv Ranjan's production house, Anuj has created the perfect blend of witty dialogues, fast-paced events, and a youth-centric flavor in the film. Throughout his direction, he has taken great care to ensure the film doesn't feel preachy. He maintains the story's pace from start to finish. The director's ability to balance comedy and emotions, essential in a romantic drama, is evident. Whether it's his skill in extracting acting from the characters or weaving together disparate tracks, Anuj Saini's direction makes this film a visual treat. The way the climax is brought to a satisfying and insightful conclusion demonstrates the director's maturity.
The cinematography
of 'Pehla Pyar Doosri Baar' further enhances its grandeur and vibrant mood. The camera is used beautifully, bringing to life the fast-paced lives of urban youth, stylish parties, and golden memories of college days. The color grading is bright and positive, creating a sense of excitement among the audience. The cinematographer has used lighting and angles to create a striking contrast between the flashback scenes of school days and the reunion scenes of today. The camera movements are smooth, making every frame look natural and pleasing to the eye. The romantic moments are enhanced by close-up shots that are truly breathtaking on screen.
Music
plays a crucial role in the success of any romantic comedy, and this film doesn't disappoint. The film's soundtrack has been created keeping in mind the tastes of today's young generation. The songs are not only pleasing to the ears but also act as a catalyst in moving the story forward. The romantic tracks enhance the film's special moments, bringing back the feeling of first love. Meanwhile, the party and reunion songs maintain the film's pace and get you tapping your feet. As for the background score, it blends so beautifully with the scenes, evoking laughter in comedic scenes and tears in emotional scenes.
Weaknesses
Like every film, "Pehli Pyar Doosri Baar" also has its drawbacks. The biggest drawback is that the basic structure of the story is similar to that of many other romantic-comedy films, making many of its plot points and twists feel predictable. The audience can easily guess what will happen next. Furthermore, the second half of the film feels a bit stretched. In some places, unnecessary scenes have been added, which, if edited more carefully, could have strengthened the film's impact. The backstories of some characters could have been given more depth, making their past conflicts and decisions seem more logical.Final Verdict
Overall, 'Pehli Pyar Doosri Baar' is a clean, entertaining, and heartwarming romantic comedy that's a great choice for weekend viewing with family or friends. While the film doesn't break the mold of Hindi cinema, it manages to make you laugh, reminisce about the good old days, and bring a sweet smile to your face throughout its hour and a half or two. If you enjoy young love stories, sweet and sour friendships, and great music, you should definitely see this film in theaters.
