9-year-old Mihir and his friends are faced with the daunting task of outwitting the biggest, meanest bully in school –Rahul Malhotra. To help them ride through this impossible journey, they have the coolest grandpa in town –Thatha– and his fantastic tales of inspiration from the ancient Jungles of India. Together, they must build a ruthless Dinosaur, fight a nerve-racking game of cricket, and travel all the way to Rajasthan, to rediscover the power of friendship, compassion, and determination.

At a time when most animated films for children lean heavily on fantasy worlds inspired by Western templates, Return of the Jungle arrives as a refreshing reminder of the power of homegrown storytelling. Directed by acclaimed animator Vaibhav Kumaresh, known for beloved creations like Simpoo and Lamput, the film combines childhood nostalgia, Indian folktales and contemporary school-life struggles into a wholesome family entertainer. While it does not reinvent the animation genre, it succeeds in delivering a warm, engaging experience that children are likely to cherish.
The story revolves around Mihir and his group of school friends who find themselves constantly bullied by the most feared kid in school. Unable to confront him directly, they seek guidance from their grandfather, lovingly called Thatha. Through a series of Panchatantra-inspired jungle stories, Thatha imparts valuable lessons about courage, empathy, friendship and wisdom. These tales gradually help the children discover solutions to their real-life problems, transforming a simple conflict into an uplifting journey of personal growth.
What immediately stands out is the film’s visual appeal. Vaibhav Kumaresh and his team create a vibrant animated world that effortlessly blends modern India with lush, imaginative jungle landscapes. The animation is colourful, fluid and highly expressive. Character designs are particularly impressive, with each figure possessing a distinct personality and charm. Even supporting characters leave an impression, making the world feel lively and populated. The visual style carries a comforting familiarity that will resonate strongly with younger audiences.
One of the film’s biggest strengths is its cultural rootedness. Rather than borrowing from international trends, Return of the Jungle embraces Indian traditions and storytelling heritage. The Panchatantra-inspired narratives evoke memories of bedtime stories narrated by grandparents, giving the film an emotional warmth that many family audiences will appreciate. There is an unmistakable sense of nostalgia woven throughout, making it appealing not just for children but also for parents who grew up with similar tales.
The music, composed by Roto Shah and Advait Nemlekar, adds another distinctly Indian flavour to the experience. Featuring a mix of bhajans and folk melody tunes, the soundtrack is energetic and memorable. However, the frequent musical interludes occasionally work against the narrative. Some songs feel longer than necessary, slowing the pace and affecting the film’s momentum, particularly during the second half.
Narratively, the film remains straightforward and predictable. The conflict is simple, the lessons are clearly spelled out and the storytelling rarely ventures into deeper emotional territory. Adults may find the plot somewhat familiar, but the sincerity of its message and charming presentation prevent it from becoming dull.
Overall, Return of the Jungle is a delightful addition to Indian animation. It may not offer groundbreaking storytelling, but its vibrant visuals, cultural authenticity and heartwarming lessons make it an enjoyable family watch.

Return of the Jungle movie review: I had gone in with a degree of skepticism into ‘Return of the Jungle’. The title itself sounded generic, coming on the back of multiple Indian animation flicks, heavy on mythological figures, blaring background music, and an overarching preaching-from-the-pulpit tone.

While the 93-minute ‘Return of the Jungle’ is also dotted with several ‘teachable’ moments, it never forgets to add in the fun bits, and that’s where it scores. Once I got drawn in, it was clear that the film has more than a few things going for it. Playful animal characters, school kids who feel like they could exist out of the frame, relatable ‘problems’ that feel like they could be fixed, and, glory be, not a single mythological figure lurking in the jungle.

The parallels are drawn neatly. In the Kendriya Vidyalaya, where our characters study (specifically in class 1V B, nice touch) there’s your nice young boy and his pals, facing off a bully. A wise thatha (grandfather) is roped in for advice, and practical help; said grandpa does his job well by coming up with a folk tale, the kind where Goliaths defeat Davids.
A fancy dress competition blows up into a battle between the bully and nice boy. A cricket match, executed with impressive detailing– someone clearly knows their game– becomes another round between the nice guys and the not-so-nice ones. What’s nice is that the scale of the villainy– a Superman-like superhero vs a very-green dinosaur– is playful, and then the good guys win, which of course they do, everyone, including the bully boy, cheers.
What’s even more impressive is that the team knows the ethos of the KVs well: the kids are from different backgrounds and religions, and it feels good to see the reflection of a composite India, featuring a Rahul and an Ali among others, when so much of it is being erased from mainstream cinema.

It did strike me that the insistence on creating confluence makes it problematic to figure out exactly where the film, with its efficient animation, is set: a house on stilts, very North-East like, music from all over, with the Tamilian thatha listening to a suprabhatam, a dargah being the setting of a predictable but rousing qawwali, plus a lush jungle with cute critters winning over a scary hunter. But you can safely ignore such niceties, because overall, the film stays light and entertaining, perfect for the little ones.
