The single greatest strength of STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU is the one it has always had: the relationship at its centre. Pedro Pascal and the impossibly expressive Grogu, still unable to speak a word, still devastating in every single scene, carry the emotional weight of this film with an ease that bigger, louder STAR WARS productions could only dream of replicating. When Djarin looks at Grogu, there is a man grappling with a truth no parent ever wants to face that his child will outlive him by centuries, that his greatest act of love must also be his greatest act of letting go. This is not the stuff of typical blockbuster filmmaking. And Jon Favreau, to his considerable credit, never lets the spectacle smother it.

The film's action sequences are a genuine leap from anything the series managed on the small screen. Shot with IMAX cameras and designed for the grandest possible theatrical canvas, the set pieces, particularly a blistering mid-film confrontation involving the Hutts and a jaw-dropping aerial sequence in the third act, crackle with energy. Ludwig Göransson's score is arguably the finest work of his STAR WARS tenure, threading the iconic Mandalorian theme through new arrangements that feel both nostalgic and emotionally fresh.

She commands every scene she occupies. For fans of the wider universe, the integration of Zeb Orrelios, the beloved Rebels veteran voiced again by Steve Blum, lands with the quiet satisfaction of a reunion long overdue.

However, for all its emotional clarity in the quieter moments, STAR WARS: THE MANDALORIAN AND GROGU occasionally stumbles under the weight of what it is trying to be simultaneously: a self-contained entry point for newcomers and a mythology-rich payoff for devoted fans. Favreau has spoken of his desire to make this film accessible to audiences who never watched the series, an admirable instinct, but the result is a first act that spends considerable time re-establishing stakes and character motivations that seasoned fans will find unhurried, bordering on slow. The film only truly ignites once the Hutt mission is fully underway.

The geopolitical texture of the New Republic, its internal tensions, the specific nature of the Imperial threat, and the larger ideological stakes are gestured at rather than explored. For a film that positions itself as the beginning of a new cinematic chapter for STAR WARS, there is an opportunity here to build a richer world, and it is only partially seized. The plot, structured as a mission-within-a-mission, also runs a touch mechanical in its middle stretch before the emotional climax reasserts the film's deeper priorities.

Pedro Pascal has inhabited Din Djarin long enough now that the performance feels less like acting and more like breathing effortlessly, physical, quietly expressive, and anchored by a moral seriousness that makes every choice the character makes feel earned. Grogu, meanwhile, continues to be among the most effective non-verbal characters in contemporary cinema. Weaver is a delight. White surprises. The ensemble around them does precisely what is needed.

Unlike many Star Wars movies that some love and others strongly dislike, the franchise’s small-screen spin-off has enjoyed a largely favourable reception. Much of this is thanks to the badass bounty hunter Din Djarin, also known as The Mandalorian or Mando, and his cute li’l green companion Grogu — the infant from Yoda’s species, blessed with telekinetic powers. The beloved duo now gets a big-screen outing in director Jon Favreau’s latest movie, seven years after the show debuted.
The film is a standalone fare that’s fun, adventurous, visually appealing, and engaging for the most part. The helmeted hero wields his blaster to take down evil warlords and mafia ruling after the Empire’s fall in Return of the Jedi. The opening sequence launches into high-octane action as Mando tackles Stormtroopers and All Terrain Walkers in a set piece that immediately announces the film’s big-screen ambition. The narrative swiftly moves to his next mission — to retrieve Rotta the Hutt, who is being held hostage in exchange for crucial information from the Hutt Twins.
Although the story moves at an easy pace, it is average, and the overall narrative falls short of being truly outstanding. The film remains an extension of the series and may as well be a couple of episodes stitched together as a silver-screen fan service outing. That said, it is an engaging watch that brings together everything that has made the series so wildly popular.
Detailed creature designs and world-building are among the film’s most striking parts. From All Terrain Walkers and vessels to the pint-sized alien starship mechanics, Anzellans, dragon snakes, Keibu, and the many strange beings that populate the Outer Rim, the film has enough visual treats to keep Star Wars fans invested. The action sequences are elaborate and immersive, whether it is Mando taking on monstrous creatures or moving through combat with his trademark precision.
Mando and Grogu’s companionship gives the film its heart, whether Baby Yoda is cutely cooing, nibbling on macaroons, using his powers at the right moment, or simply being an adorable companion. The film also gets its humour right in places, especially in the scene where the Anzellans and Grogu see each other for the first time. Ludwig Göransson’s music, too, adds to the scale and adventure without overpowering the storytelling.
Pedro Pascal’s voice performance continues to give Mando the right mix of restraint, grit, and warmth, while his body doubles, including Brendan Wayne and Lateef Crowder, ensure the character's physicality remains sharp and convincing. Sigourney Weaver has a short but impactful presence, adding gravitas to the narrative. The voice actors do a good job as well, especially Jeremy Allen White, who gives Rotta a distinct personality.
The Mandalorian and Grogu works well as a standalone movie, and even if a viewer has no context of the series, nothing would feel amiss. It may be more of a fan service offering and average in terms of story, but its scale, action, creatures, and Mando-Grogu charm make it a big-screen watch.

It is a small moment, almost throwaway in the middle of explosions, space chases and galactic politics. Yet it quietly captures why this corner of the universe continues to resonate more than many of its grander, louder counterparts.
For all its spectacle, The Mandalorian and Grogu works best when it remembers it is not really about saving galaxies. It is about companionship.

Directed by Jon Favreau, who also co-wrote the film with Dave Filoni and Noah Kloor, the film marks the first theatrical outing for characters introduced in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. Rather than reinventing the franchise, Favreau chooses familiarity. The film leans heavily into the same space-western rhythm that made the original series successful: wandering heroes, morally grey worlds, episodic adventures and moments of emotional sincerity hidden beneath blockbuster spectacle. That approach mostly works.
The story follows Din Djarin, played once again by Pedro Pascal, as he becomes entangled in another dangerous mission involving remnants of the Empire, bounty hunters and the kidnapping of Rotta, Jabba the Hutt’s son. The narrative itself is relatively straightforward, almost deceptively so for a modern franchise film. There are betrayals, large-scale action sequences and enough references to wider Star Wars lore, but the movie rarely gets lost in mythology.
Instead, it stays firmly anchored in the relationship between Din and Grogu. And unsurprisingly, Grogu steals nearly every scene.

At this point, the character’s appeal should not work as effortlessly as it still does. Yet every small reaction, every mischievous use of the Force and every silent interaction somehow lands. The film wisely avoids turning Grogu into a gimmick. Beneath the humour and audience affection, he remains emotionally important to the story. His presence softens the film’s rougher edges and gives its action genuine emotional stakes.

Ironically, the movie’s biggest weakness also comes from this balance.

For a film carrying The Mandalorian in its title, Din Djarin often feels strangely one-dimensional in his own story. Pedro Pascal continues to bring quiet gravitas to the role, communicating exhaustion, protectiveness and loneliness through minimal dialogue and physical restraint. But the screenplay rarely allows Din much emotional complexity beyond his role as protector and reluctant father figure. There are glimpses of deeper internal conflict, particularly around identity and belonging, but the film never fully explores them.

As a result, Grogu frequently emerges as the stronger emotional presence, even without speaking a single word.
Visually, the movie delivers exactly what one expects from a theatrical Star Wars experience. The scale is larger than the series, the action more polished and the production design richly textured. Favreau and cinematographer Greig Fraser create worlds that feel expansive without becoming visually overwhelming. The film also retains the dusty, lived-in aesthetic that separated The Mandalorian from the shinier worlds of earlier franchise entries.

The action itself is entertaining, though occasionally repetitive. Several sequences feel structured like extended side missions, enjoyable in isolation but lacking cumulative dramatic weight. Yet even when the narrative drifts, the film remains consistently watchable because of its tone.

Unlike many franchise films burdened by self-importance, The Mandalorian and Grogu feels refreshingly comfortable with simplicity. It understands that audiences are not necessarily looking for universe-altering revelations every time they return to Star Wars. Sometimes, they simply want a compelling adventure with characters they care about.
A heartfelt addition to Star Wars
The supporting cast, including Jeremy Allen White as Rotta the Hutt and Sigourney Weaver as Ward, alongside a cameo by Martin Scorsese, adds texture to the world. The film’s humour also lands naturally, never overwhelming the emotional beats or undercutting tension for easy jokes.

Most importantly, the movie remembers that emotional investment matters more than mythology.

For all its flaws, The Mandalorian and Grogu succeeds because it preserves the sincerity that made the series stand out in the first place. Beneath the action and nostalgia is a surprisingly intimate story about responsibility, connection and chosen family.

It may not be the boldest Star Wars film, nor the most narratively ambitious. But in an era where franchise storytelling often mistakes scale for substance, there is something refreshing about a film content with being heartfelt, adventurous and emotionally grounded.

And yes, Grogu still walks away with the entire movie.
