THE ODYSSEY is based on the ancient Greek epic ‘Odyssey’ by Homer. The story is fantastic and explores several themes that resonate universally. Christopher Nolan's screenplay is gripping. The film moves across different timelines and yet, it is seamlessly put together on paper. The dialogues are strong and a few one-liners will lead to applause. At the same time, the use of modern-sounding words like ‘Dad’ and ‘Daddy’ could have been avoided.

Christopher Nolan’s direction is exemplary. As expected, he respects the audience’s intelligence and never dumbs down the material. Another filmmaker might have begun the narrative before the Trojan War and followed the events chronologically. Nolan, however, employs his distinctive storytelling style to draw viewers into the narrative. The film unfolds across two tracks – the present-day events in Ithaca and Odysseus’ perilous journey after setting sail for home. Throughout the first half and much of the second, the latter track truly captivates the viewer. The challenges Odysseus encounters and the manner in which Nolan stages them make for a gripping watch. Two sequences stand out in particular – Odysseus and his men being trapped inside the cave of the Cyclops Polyphemus (Bill Irwin), and the episode involving Circe (Samantha Morton).

However, Nolan reserves the best for the finale. The happenings in the last 20 minutes are akin to an Indian commercial film. Hence, the audiences in the country would lap it up. Expect frenzy in cinemas at this point!

However, THE ODYSSEY is not without its share of blemishes. The opening 20 minutes can be confusing, as it takes some time to understand the various characters, their motivations and their respective arcs. Viewers unfamiliar with Greek mythology may struggle during the first 30 minutes, while a few aspects might remain unclear even later. The interest level also dips briefly during a few portions in the middle. Moreover, certain developments feel sudden, particularly when Telemachus questions Eumaeus (John Leguizamo) about his father. It seems unconvincing that a 20-year-old man, who has suffered throughout his life because of his father’s absence, would not have sought such crucial information much earlier.
The Odyssey Movie Review Performances:
Matt Damon, without a shred of doubt, delivers one of the finest performances of his career. He humanizes Odysseus and portrays him with all his strengths, flaws and vulnerabilities. In several scenes, particularly the emotional ones, he genuinely touches the heart. At the same time, he looks quite massy in the action sequences. It is a performance worthy of a sure-shot Academy Award nomination. Tom Holland also gets an opportunity to be heroic in his own way and delivers a sincere performance. Anne Hathaway essays her part with grace and panache. It is fascinating to witness her range; just two months ago, she was seen in THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2, and here, she appears in a completely different avatar. Robert Pattinson gets under the skin of his character and delivers a terrific act. John Leguizamo has a crucial role and leaves huge mark. The same applies to Charlize Theron (Calypso) and Samantha Morton. Lupita Nyong'o’s (as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra) casting has raised eyebrows. However, setting that debate aside, her performance is first-rate. Benny Safdie (Agamemnon), Jon Bernthal (Menelaus), Himesh Patel (Eurylochus), Corey Hawkins (Polybus), Mia Goth (Melantho, the disloyal maidservant) and Elliot Page (Sinon) lend able support. Finally, Zendaya (Athena) is memorable in what can best be described as a cameo.

The Odyssey movie music and other technical aspects:
Ludwig Göransson's music score is stunning and elevates the proceedings. The theme that truly stands out is the one played during the scene of the Sirens. It is haunting and has the potential to linger in one's mind for hours after exiting the theatre.

Hoyte van Hoytema's cinematography is a visual spectacle. The film has been shot in unexplored regions and not the usual locations, which provides a nice touch. The VFX is minimal but impressive and looks different from what one usually sees in Hollywood films. The use of an anthropomorphic animatronic puppet for a crucial character is particularly effective and strikingly realistic. The action is straight out of life. Jennifer Lame's editing is seamless and coherent.

Matt Damon delivers one of the finest performances of his career. His Odysseus isn't the swaggering warrior pop culture has conditioned us to expect. He is tired. Haunted. And ridden with unspeakable guilt.

But as a man determined to find his way back home, he is astute enough to rely on his intelligence and find his way through impossible situations.

Looking back at his career, it almost feels like this role was inevitable for Damon.

From Saving Private Ryan to Dogma to The Martian and even Interstellar, his filmography is a collection of reluctant heroes trying to return home. This feels like the culmination of that recurring screen persona. The man is top-notch in the role.

As amazing as Damon is, Anne Hathaway walks away with my absolute favourite performance in the film. Her Penelope is not written as someone waiting to be rescued. She plays patience as an act of resilience. Hathaway shows her a powerful emotional strength beneath Penelope's restraint, making both the quiet moments and the bigger dramatic scenes equally effective.

Another standout performance comes from Samantha Morton. She creates a feeling of genuine unease as Circe, whose power over Odysseus' men becomes one of the film's eeriest stretches.

Tom Holland performs capably as Telemachus, although the screenplay leaves him slightly underdeveloped compared to the central relationship between Odysseus and Penelope.

Elliot Page plays the Greek soldier named Sinon, who convinces the Trojans to bring the wooden horse inside their city walls. The character is a creative liberty, but it works well as he adds a human element to the story.

Lupita Nyong'o's casting as Helen has already sparked endless online discourse. Much of it misses the point. Great stories have always evolved through re-interpretation, as long as the changes serve the story. Denzel Washington has played Don Pedro in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing and later portrayed the titular role in Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth. We have an example of Ben Kingsley playing Mahatma Gandhi in Richard Attenborough's Gandhi.
Fantasy That Needed More Wonder
For me, the biggest excitement surrounding The Odyssey was, of course, seeing Christopher Nolan finally step into full-blown fantasy.

Unlike the Ralph Fiennes-starrer The Return, which bypassed Homer's mythical and supernatural elements, Nolan fully embraces them. The one-eyed Cyclops, the giant Laestrygonians, the six-headed sea monster Scylla, the deadly whirlpool Charybdis -- it's all there. But they don't fully achieve the overwhelming sense of awe or wonder. Some encounters feel almost muted such as The Sirens, whose songs put the voyagers to death.

These fantastical elements feel annoyingly restrained because Nolan seems determined to not indulge in fantasy as visual excess. That's a bummer because it's like imagining Dune while barely showing the sandworms.

The technical achievement with practical effects is there, but these scenes remain surprisingly brief and don't leave the strong impression they should.

I just kept wishing they had gone one step further.If Oppenheimer felt like the culmination of Nolan's long-standing creative partnerships, The Odyssey proves that the team he has assembled around him continues to operate at their optimum.

Composer Ludwig Goransson is a madman! I am still in the haze from last year's Sinners soundtrack, and I already feel like I need The Odyssey's OST after the remarkable work he has put up.

The score during the Trojan Horse sequence is heart-pounding, and later in the quieter moments between Odysseus and Penelope, it feels almost spiritual. He elevates every scene, big or small, with magnificent score.

At this point, calling him Hans Zimmer's successor almost feels unfair because he has carved out a voice that is entirely his own.

The most unexpected composition comes with Travis Scott (who previously created The Plan for Tenet). The film opens and closes with his presence, using his vocals in the form of oral poetry, mixing up an ancient form of storytelling with something modern. It is a bonkers idea, but it makes perfect sense once you see it come together by the end.

Nolan's frequent collaborator Hoyte van Hoytema somehow finds new ways to outdo himself.

The practical photography makes all the difference. When waves crash into Odysseus' ships, you feel their enormous force. Every journey across the sea feels terrifyingly real, and that physicality is something very few modern blockbusters still manage to capture.

As the centerpiece action sequence, the decisive Trojan War battle inside Troy City's walls is easily one of the film's highlights. The importance of this scene looms large over the story. Nolan builds the tension with patience before it explodes into absolute chaos. It is exhilarating filmmaking. The final 30 minutes elevate everything that comes before.

In some of the film's most powerful moments, Nolan delivers a climatic stretch that neatly ties the film's politics, themes and emotional core to great effect, creating the most complete and beautiful ending of his career.

By taking one of the oldest stories and finding new meaning within it, he transforms it into a film that feels timely for the world while also remaining hopeful.

This is one of those rare films where the production design isn't merely impressive - it's transporting.

Matt Damon delivers what is arguably one of the strongest performances of his career. His Odysseus isn't presented as an invincible hero but as a man slowly being consumed by the consequences of his choices. Damon conveys exhaustion, regret and resilience with remarkable restraint, making the character's emotional journey just as compelling as his physical one.

Anne Hathaway is equally compelling as Penelope. She brings grace, quiet strength and emotional depth to a character who could easily have been reduced to someone simply waiting at home. Watching Hathaway inhabit the role, it's impossible to imagine anyone else playing the Queen of Ithaca. Tom Holland, meanwhile, surprises with one of his most mature performances. As Telemachus, he convincingly portrays a young man eager to prove himself before gradually realising the impossible expectations attached to his father's legacy.

One of the film's biggest strengths is its casting. Robert Pattinson is wonderfully unsettling, bringing arrogance, manipulation and quiet menace to his role without ever slipping into caricature. Yet the biggest surprise is Zendaya as Athena. Nolan gives the goddess an unexpected emotional purpose that gradually reveals itself over the course of the film. Without venturing into spoiler territory, her presence carries a meaning that extends beyond mythology and becomes deeply personal for Odysseus. If there's one complaint, it's that she simply isn't on screen enough.

Nolan also offers an interesting reinterpretation of Helen through Lupita Nyong'o's performance. Rather than presenting her merely as the legendary beauty who sparked a war, he gives her emotional agency, exploring her grief and humanity in ways rarely seen in previous adaptations.

Back in the sea, Odysseus too is faced with multiple moral and lesser-than-two-evils dilemmas – one among them being choosing to lose his entire ship to a dangerous whirlpool or letting a sea monster devour six of his men. In doing so, he breaks down and succumbs to his sense of self. But these extraordinary emotional complexities, nuances and undercurrents aren’t all that there’s to The Odyssey.

Shot in IMAX cameras, there’s a particular scene at the sea that stands out. It’s a masterclass in framing and portraying a spectacle-driven set piece. The scale and visual grandeur laced with tension and peril is, for the lack of a better word, captivating. After Zeus unleashes a catastrophic storm at sea, the ship is shattered amid intense thundering and lightening.

This sequence is pure cinematic mayhem. The camera rocks, swirls and crashes through the action with the same ferocity as the waves battering Odysseus’ ship. Credit goes to the lighting team for creating a chiaroscuro-like thunder effect. The sequence of complete helplessness and defeat is almost palpable, almost pushing you to the edge of your seat.

In yet another elaborate sequence, Odysseus and his men fight the gigantic Polyphemus, a one-eyed monster inside a cave. Nolan resists the temptation to rush through the spectacle. And gradually, you find yourself completely immersed in this supernatural world. You can barely look away from the screen. At 2 hours 55 minutes, he embraces a deliberately measured pace.

The iconic Trojan Horse episode deserves a mention too. The sequence is depicted in the most cinematic way. The tension comes from the claustrophobia of the warriors trapped inside the wooden horse and Ludwig Göransson’s background score. Here too, Nolan allows the narrative to breathe and the tension to simmer, letting dread accumulate scene-by-scene rather than relying on constant action.

He stretches moments just enough for the audience to feel the weight of what is at stake. By prioritising atmosphere, character and suspense over instant gratification, he transforms familiar mythological episodes into deeply immersive and emotionally charged cinematic experiences. Echoing the sentiment of the internet, The Odyssey is truly peak cinema.

What leaves an indelible impression is that the film doesn’t treat war as a spectacle. The battle sequence where men perish amid flames and devastation, lingers in Odysseus’ mind long after the smoke clears. The images return to him like a recurring nightmare. After breaking Athena’s statue, she starts accompanying him as his figment of imagination. The effect is palpable.

This extraordinary screenplay is further elevated by a string of powerful acts. Damon as Odysseus delivers what may well be the performance of his career. Even in the physically fraught scenes, his vulnerability is what stands out. He brings remarkable restraint to the role, allowing Odysseus’ inner turmoil to surface without ever slipping into melodrama.

Credit must also go to Nolan for resisting the temptation to sacrifice emotional depth at the altar of heroism. Though Odysseus is the quintessential larger-than-life figure, the film never loses sight of his humanity.

Cast Performances
Hathaway as Penelope is like a simmering volcano. She lends the part a quiet dignity and steely resolve that anchors the emotional core of the film. She’s particularly effective in the more intimate moments, conveying longing, loneliness and unwavering determination through the subtlest shifts in expression. Her luminous screen presence will stay with you. Holland as Telemachus brings a sense of sincerity to the part. While Odysseus looms large over the narrative, Holland ensures that his Telemachus isn’t overshadowed.

He gets one of the film’s most rewarding arcs and captures the character’s frustration, vulnerability and quiet resilience with remarkable conviction. Charlize Theron plays Calypso, a nymph, who keeps Odysseus protected in an island for seven years by offering him lotus to ‘cloud his mind and sap his will’. She’s enchanting and the mystery and intrigue that she carries is memorable.

Zendaya as Athena gets a short screen time but leaves an impact and so does Samantha Morton as Circe. Pattinson as Antinous brings an air of unpredictability that constantly keeps you on the edge. He effortlessly oscillates between charm and menace and has a magnetic screen presence even when surrounded by a stellar ensemble.

Nolan also deserves points for his creative liberties – casting black actor Lupita Nyong’o to play Helen, Indian origin actor Himesh Patel as Odysseus’s second-in-command Eurylochus and trans-actor Elliot Page as Greek warrior Sinon. Ultimately, Nolan appears less interested in producing a recreation of Homer and more invested in crafting an interpretation that speaks to contemporary audiences.

Final Verdict
The Odyssey is beguiling, visually breathtaking and emotionally resonant. It’s a monumental achievement. It isn’t just one of Nolan’s finest films but also modern epic filmmaking at its most ambitious and rewarding.

There is absolutely no questioning why Nolan insisted audiences experience The Odyssey in IMAX. Hoyte van Hoytema’s cinematography is breathtaking. Every frame feels almost mythical, recreating a civilisation that has existed for centuries in literature but rarely with this kind of scale on screen. The landscapes appear suspended somewhere between history and dream, making ancient Greece feel both familiar and impossibly distant.
The sequence may frustrate some viewers, but it also serves a purpose. By this point, Odysseus himself is struggling to hold on to memory. Those familiar with Homer's text will recognise the significance of the lotus, which dulls memory and weakens one’s attachment to the past. The film mirrors that emotional state, even if it slightly disrupts the pacing.

The emotional journey doesn’t quite land
The Odyssey asks audiences to understand a warrior haunted by war rather than celebrate his victories. The problem is that for much of its runtime, we are told about Odysseus’ suffering instead of truly feeling it.

Yes, we know he brought down Troy. Yes, we understand that countless lives were lost. But Nolan’s screenplay doesn’t always allow us inside Odysseus’ mind enough to fully grasp the burden he carries. His longing for Penelope, Telemachus and Ithaca is evident, but the deeper psychological scars of war remain frustratingly distant for most of the film.
Ironically, the answer arrives only towards the end. The brief glimpses of the Trojan War become the emotional key that unlocks everything Nolan has been building towards. The sequence becomes the emotional centrepiece of the film and perhaps the only moment where we truly understand what has kept Odysseus awake all these years.

That sequence is devastating. It suddenly reframes the sleepless nights, the guilt and the endless wandering, making you wish the screenplay had trusted those emotions much earlier.

The performances
Matt Damon completely commits to Odysseus’ physical and emotional journey. His transformation is visible not only through his performance but also through the gradual deterioration of his body. The weight loss, the weary eyes and the quiet resignation all communicate a man who has spent years merely surviving rather than living. He plays Odysseus as someone who did what he had to do, but never truly forgave himself for it.

Anne Hathaway, meanwhile, becomes the emotional anchor of the story. Despite limited screen time, she makes every appearance count. Her Penelope is resilient without becoming performative, carrying the impossible burden of protecting both her kingdom and her son while refusing to surrender hope.Robert Pattinson also impresses as the calculating Antinous, giving the antagonist enough menace without reducing him to a caricature.

Among the supporting cast, Himesh Patel deserves special mention. Despite early conversations around his casting, he delivers a remarkably grounded Eurylochus, becoming one of Odysseus’ most dependable companions.

John Leguizamo also leaves an impression as Eumaeus, whose unwavering loyalty quietly reinforces the film’s emotional core.

The same cannot be said for everyone else. Tom Holland’s Telemachus rarely gets enough material to develop beyond being the waiting son who is still a boy and yet to prove his worth.Zendaya's Athena appears only in fleeting moments despite the anticipation surrounding her role, while Lupita Nyong’o’s Helen is similarly underused.

And then there’s Travis Scott. If words could correctly describe it, he’s the ‘much-ado-about-nothing’ character in the film.

Nolan and the women of The Odyssey
One of Nolan’s most thoughtful decisions lies in how he writes the women. The film never pauses to make grand declarations about gender, yet it quietly exposes how power functions in a deeply patriarchal society.

One conversation between Penelope and Telemachus stands out in particular, when she reminds him that people overlook the fact that she sits on the throne simply because she is not a man.

The moment is brief, beautifully written and doesn’t linger long enough to look preachy. It trusts the audience to understand its significance.

The modern language- distraction or relatable?
For a film so meticulously crafted, a few creative choices feel oddly modern. The contemporary American accents never fully disappear into the ancient setting. And some dialogue choices are genuinely distracting.

When Telemachus refers to Odysseus as “Dad,” it momentarily pulls you out of Homer’s world. The occasional expletives have a similar effect. These are small complaints in a three-hour film, but they are noticeable enough to interrupt the immersion Nolan otherwise works so hard to create.

Is The Odyssey Christopher Nolan’s best film?
For me, no! But, that doesn’t make it any less impressive.

Adapting Homer’s epic is an enormous undertaking, and Nolan deserves credit for resisting the temptation to create an action spectacle from beginning to end. Instead, he chooses introspection over constant battle, focusing less on Odysseus’ victories than on what those victories cost him. That restraint is what truly elevates it.

The screenplay may not always bridge the emotional distance between the audience and its hero, but the film succeeds in reminding us why The Odyssey continues to matter nearly three millennia later.

More than becoming a fantasy tale involving monsters, gods or impossible voyages and pining for home, it becomes about what war does to those who survive it (the dialogue- “War dehumanises men” echo long after the film is over) and about how civilisation, however broken, bruised and morally compromised, somehow continues to endure.
