Toxic begins with an immersive first 15 minutes, establishing a grand, dark and unmistakably cinematic world. There are shades of KGF in its world-building, particularly in the way it presents its larger-than-life protagonist and his violent surroundings. But unlike KGF, the world here often feels incomplete and, at times, confusing.
The film has plenty of characters, most of them nameless, but few leave a lasting impression. Its production design, however, deserves a separate round of applause. The visual splendour is undeniable, and the cinematography, set design and action blocks are all big-screen material. Several sequences look terrific and showcase the ambition behind the project.
Yet Toxic often mistakes visual grandeur for storytelling depth. The film soon begins to feel like a series of Instagram reels stitched together: each segment looks like something and feels like something, but ultimately adds up to very little. Beneath the violence, sex, swagger and scale, the screenplay needed considerably more substance.
That lack of cohesion is most evident in the craft. The editing is extremely choppy, relying heavily on the rapid-cut style audiences have come to associate with KGF. The sheer number of cuts, often without a legible point of focus is disorienting. Blood and alcohol flow endlessly, but the screenplay struggles to keep pace with the visuals. The emotional portions do not always land as strongly as intended, making the dramatic highs feel less impactful. The screenplay is uneven, and a few loose ends are never satisfactorily tied up. Information is thrown at the audience in fragments, characters appear and disappear without enough context, relationships are introduced at dizzying speed, and action sequences frequently take precedence over establishing the stakes. The larger narrative is comprehensible, but getting there can be unnecessarily exhausting.
The action sequences reflect this imbalance. Some are brilliantly staged and make for terrific big-screen moments, while others feel excessive without leaving much of an impact. The violence is unapologetic, perhaps unlike anything seen before in a mainstream Kannada film. The first half constantly alternates between sex and violence, and at times combines the two, clearly designed to give the audience an adrenaline rush. But the effect starts wearing thin when the screenplay does not offer enough substance underneath the spectacle.
Director Geethu Mohandas keeps Yash firmly on the commercial pedal, and the speed only increases with every passing scene. Unfortunately, the women in Toxic are surprisingly underwritten. Most of the characters lack the depth required to make us emotionally invest in their journeys, and the emotional core does not always receive the attention it needs.
Yash, however, remains a rockstar. His aura is unmatched, and Toxic gives him two acting playgrounds as Raya and Ticket, to have a field day with. He is a treat to watch in both avatars, particularly as Ticket, where he breathes violence with every frame. The physical transformation is evident, and the amount of hard work he has put into the character shows. The physical transformation and digital de-ageing distinguish him from Raya, but it is Yash’s body language that truly creates the character. Ticket moves with an almost feral physicality, particularly during the action sequences, while his parkour-like movements give him an unusual, almost dreamlike quality. Yash goes all guns blazing and gives Toxic everything he has.
Kiara Advani is another highlight. She is the calm to Raya’s chaos, and that contradiction works well. Nayanthara’s character, however, has an arc that does not quite allow her to make the impact one would expect. Rukmini Vasanth, Tara Sutaria and Huma Qureshi perform their parts with ease, but none of the female characters run particularly deep or stand out. Perhaps Yash’s towering screen presence is one reason for this, but the bigger issue is the lack of character depth across the board.
The film’s soundscape adds to its commercial energy. Ravi Basrur’s music is loud and feels like an extension of the KGFsoundscape. At least in Kannada, some of the songs and lyrics do not quite sit well with the narrative. The dubbing in close-up shots can also feel slightly jarring. VFX too feels a bit slightly off in some scenes.
The final 20 minutes take the film in a completely different, almost arthouse direction. It is the kind of ending that could leave audiences either completely fascinated or thoroughly disappointed.
Ultimately, Toxic is undoubtedly impressive in terms of scale. Its cinematography, production design, action and overall visual presentation demand to be experienced on the big screen. There is no denying the ambition behind the project. But ambition alone cannot hold a film together.
Toxic has style and violence in abundance, but substance in short supply. The screenplay is uneven, the runtime feels excessive, several characters are underdeveloped and the emotional beats do not always hit home. Beneath the guns, bloodshed, machismo and spectacle is a potentially compelling story about abandonment, inherited trauma, masculine violence and the complicated relationship between fathers and sons. The film clearly knows what it wants to say. It just doesn’t always know how to make us feel it.
Still, if you are a Yash fan, there is plenty to enjoy. His screen presence, action sequences, set design and world building, and larger-than-life performance make Toxic worth watching on the big screen.

Rocking star Yash is back on the big screen after a gap of four years with Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-ups. His last film, KGF: Chapter 2, released in 2022 and went on to amass a whopping Rs 1250 crore reportedly at the box office. Yash was no longer a Kannada star but an Indian star with a global fan following. He took his time to follow up with another film but now he's back with the Geetu Mohandas directorial, Toxic, a massive gangster drama made on a reported budget of more than Rs 500 crore.

When Mellisa (Rukmini Vasanth) angrily goes to meet Raya (Yash) seeking revenge, she threatens to blow him up along with her, thanks to a body-strapped bomb. However, Raya is remarkably unfazed as he has faced death numerous times and survived it. He just looks stonily at her and says, "We have two mins to die; I'll make this time unforgettable for you in bed."

Clearly, this is a gangster drama that's far from run-of-the-mill. The period movie is set for the most part in 1940s Goa where we see Raya and his elder sister Ganga (Nayanthara) being part of a big criminal network. The siblings are in the opium business with Salvador (Darrell D'Silva), a powerful man in the world of crime who adds another layer of danger to their already dark and murky world. Raya, who eventually marries Salvador's daughter Rebecca, is not your conventional gangster though. He is a man hardened by his past and every interaction is shaped by the wounds he carries.
In his life, women shape his worldview thanks to his mother, and in many ways, also his understanding of love, loyalty and betrayal. Other than Ganga whom he holds in high esteem and is inseparable from, the women in his life are mainly there to serve his lust and base desires. In fact, his wife Rebecca (Tara Sutaria), his mistress Nadia (Kiara Advani) and later his girlfriend Mellisa (Rukmini Vasanth) are all attracted to his unabashed toxic masculinity. There is something magnetic about his arrogance, aggressive and unapologetic approach towards women, which they are mesmerised by. But one woman who eyes him with contempt is Salvador's girlfriend Elizabeth (Huma Qureshi) who tries her best to destroy him.
Raya is a deeply flawed man and it shows not just in his attitude towards them but also in his cringe, overtly sexual dialogues. Sample another take from Raya when he tells Mellisa, 'If I need to get over the hangover of a woman, I'll go to another woman. There's no need for morality.' His words and actions are extremely provocative and it shows that he's a gun-toting chain-smoker who has no interest in conforming to the norm in any aspect of life.

Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-ups works largely because of Yash and the strong roles that the women in the film - Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi and Rukmini Vasanth - have been empowered with. These actresses play characters with agency that add depth to Raya's world and propel the story forward.

Having said that, the story and screenplay of the film are not compelling as its characters. The story is a regular gangster drama where we see brutally orphaned siblings take on the world and try to establish themselves in a ruthless criminal world. And the themes of family, power, masculinity, desire, betrayal and redemption have been woven into the screenplay but unfortunately, it's not coherent and seamless. Some portions hold your attention like the circus artist Nadia's love story, while others especially numerous fight sequences feel stretched and fail to maintain an engaging momentum.

Right from the get-go, every attempt has been made to make Yash larger-than-life as Raya and to elevate every single scene of his with a high-energy BGM and superbly stylised visuals.

Toxic rarely lets us forget that we are watching a pan-Indian star and Yash's swagger and attitude on screen have been amplified by the staging, music and visuals. The movie sees action sequences with Raya followed by highly sensual scenes and this is a pattern that is followed religiously through the film. One feels the only thing that drives this haunted, angry man is violence and sex - one begins to wonder whether Raya's world has been made to be deliberately primal and driven by his basest instincts.

What sets director Geetu Mohandas' Toxic apart though is the treatment of the gangster drama. She has chosen to present it as a highly stylised and visually appealing world of violence, power, love, family, betrayal and revenge. The production values are lavish right from the massive sets to the luxurious costumes and striking visuals making Toxic a cinematic spectacle for the Indian audience. There are clear influences as well of Moulin Rouge, Cirque du Soleil, Joker and The Revenant, that we spot through the film. However, credit must be given to Geetu Mohandas for attempting to mount this big project and trying to make it a superstar project worthy of Yash. The story has been written by both Yash and Geetu Mohandas and this is where the film is a let-down as it seems to have focused more on style than on the story.

Yash has a formidable screen presence and he is the driving force of Toxic. Raya is toxic and morally corrupt but he is not dull. And for his son Ticket (Yash) there is no black and white but rules he simply makes up as he goes along. Yash plays the dual roles convincingly with superb ease and puts his unique stamp on both of them. As for the ladies in the film, all of them - Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria, Huma Qureshi and Rukmini Vasanth - have unanimously excelled in their roles. Each one of them makes a strong impact on screen and this shows their talent and how invested they have been in this film as well.

Technically, the film is excellent as noted earlier. The music and BGM by Ravi Basrur stand out, as does the cinematography by Rajeev Ravi. The editing by Ujwal Kulkarni could have been better as some scenes just jump from one to the other and some scenes could have been trimmed down to reduce the long running time (194 minutes).

Toxic is not the gangster Hollywood-style epic one expected (it has some shades of KGF) but it's an ambitious effort undertaken by Yash and Geetu Mohandas to give the Indian audience a unique experiment and it delivers on that for the most part.

Stylistically exuberant, massy, atmospheric, action-packed and deliciously macabre, Toxic, Geetu Mohandas’ multi-starrer with Yash at the helm, takes its own sweet time to pull you into its gritty and shadow-slicked world. But once it does, it leaves you hooked, line and sinker, to a story that is not only unique but also unafraid of scraping deep into the moral greys of its people, excavating their psyche, wounds, hunger and motives. Backed by a stellar slew of female faces, including Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Kiara Advani and Tara Sutaria, the film gradually reveals why it has been dubbed “a fairy tale for grown-ups." Yes, it does suffer from flaws that are too glaring to be politely ignored, but compared to the scale on which it has been mounted and the sweep of its overarching plot, one can still overlook much of the turbulence. So, is it worth the watch? Let’s find out.

Set in post-1947 Goa, when the rest of India had become independent but Goa still remained under the Portuguese, the film follows Raya, played by Yash, and his sister Ganga, played by Nayanthara. The two have risen together from the darkest, most tenebrous pits of their childhood. Ganga has mentored, raised and moulded Raya in the furnace of their afflictions and misfortunes, and she wants nothing less than Goa for him. Like Chanakya, she guides him, offers words of wisdom every now and then, and helps her brother inch towards his zenith, pushing him to become the Sikandar of their world.
Raya is a man who sports a stylish beard, smokes cigarettes with swagger, has edgy and occasionally metaphorical comebacks, carries a penchant for violence, thrashes enemies with style and panache, and always finds extraordinary ways to make his rivals meet their maker. He is certainly not the usual morally upright protagonist, and that is evident in the way he carries himself. Among his many vices, one that he seems most passionately committed to is women. But he is not the monogamous kind, something he makes very clear when he says, “Ishq aisa karta har ladki ko lagta chaand ussi ke chakkar lagata magar kameene ka dil har bandhan se pare, khula aasmaan tha, azaad."
Enter Rebecca, played by Tara Sutaria, the daughter of Salvador, the gangster for whom Raya and Ganga work. It does not take long for Raya to charm and entice his way into Rebecca’s heart. While he continues his fling with her in secrecy, Salvador’s partner Elizabeth, played by Huma Qureshi, and her brother Tony, played by Akshay Oberoi, hatch a sinister plan to eliminate Salvador once and for all.

That plan begins at Nadia’s Royal Circus, but Raya saves the day by heroically fighting off hired goons dressed as jokers in a snazzy, gory and wildly theatrical manner. The circus also becomes a pivotal point in his life, because this is where he crosses paths with Nadia, played by Kiara Advani.

Initially, Raya suspects Nadia of being behind the attack on Salvador, but eventually learns that she was not involved. The two then develop a complicated, charged and intense relationship, one that brings both their worlds crashing down amid chaos, unprecedented violence, trauma and, of course, an offspring who becomes the focal point of the story. Revealing more than that would ruin the experience.
At first glance, Toxic may seem like yet another pan-India spectacle with over-the-top action, a massive budget, thunderous dialogues, formidable enemies and a protagonist either seeking vengeance or trying to save someone dear to him. But first impressions can often be treacherous, and that is precisely true in the case of Toxic.

This Geetu Mohandas directorial is more than the action, swagger, music and dialogues it offers its viewers. There are several psychological layers to peel through as the story progresses, whether it is Raya’s bond with Ganga, his vehement confrontations with his son Ticket, also played by Yash, or Raya’s fractured psyche, shaped by the choices he makes, both good and bad. There is far more at play here than massy punchlines and cool fight sequences, something one discovers slowly while sinking deeper into Raya’s complicated story arc.

The film is a visual treat. Most of the scenes have been mounted and shot in a way that feels delectable to the eyes. The post-Independence setting of Goa and its portrayal leave a strong impression.

Men sporting dapper suits and classic hairstyles, women oozing glamour, opulent sets, meticulous costumes, gleaming cars and stylish fedoras all accentuate the visual architecture of the story, and quite rightly so. Some sequences, especially the one set at the circus and another at the diner, stand apart because of how brilliant and effulgent they look in terms of scale, design and magnitude. Credit must go to Rajeev Ravi’s cinematography, production designer TP Abid, art directors Mohan B Kere and Sandeep G Sharma, along with the rest of the respective departments that help shape the film’s lush and menacing visual identity.

As for the flaws, the editing can come across as choppy and discordant. The abrupt cuts and sequences, quite reminiscent of KGF, hinder one’s attention span every now and then across the film’s 3 hour and 14 minutes runtime. Some dialogues land with impact, while others feel corny and even crass in certain instances.

And while the film understandably revolves around Raya, it becomes evident that with so many female characters orbiting him, not everyone gets her due. There is a gross underutilisation of female characters despite the film’s heavy emphasis on its female-led casting. Geetu Mohandas could have given more agency to these women, which would have elevated the overall experience rather than occasionally making them feel like ornamental placeholders in Raya’s expanding mythology. While characters like Ganga and Elizabeth, played by Nayanthara and Huma Qureshi respectively, command a strong presence in the larger storyline, Rebecca, played by Tara Sutaria, and Mellisa, played by Rukmini Vasanth, do not quite have the same grip on the narrative.

On the acting front, Yash hits it out of the park with his double role as Raya and his eccentric son Ticket. The way he approaches, develops and portrays these two contrasting and disparate characters, their respective mannerisms, voice inflections and body movements, is absolutely commendable. Ticket’s flexible, agile and parkour-like physicality stands in striking contrast to Raya’s imposing and lofty demeanour. One particular scene towards the end of the film, where we witness this variance with remarkable clarity, proves just how carefully Yash has calibrated both performances.

Kiara Advani as Nadia also performs exceptionally well, portraying a broken woman who falls passionately for Raya and becomes a collateral participant in his chaotic world. Her chemistry with Yash works wonderfully. Huma Qureshi as Elizabeth, Nayanthara as Ganga and Rukmini Vasanth as Mellisa each bring gravitas and uniqueness to their characters. Tara Sutaria too does a phenomenal job as Rebecca, and her scenes with Yash are truly impressive. Other actors who deserve praise include Sudev Nair as Karmadi, Kabir Pahwa as young Ticket, Akshay Oberoi as Tony and others, all of whom add texture to the film’s sprawling canvas.

In the end, Toxic may not be an immaculate beast, but it is certainly a fascinating one. It is excessive, moody, violent, ornate and occasionally uneven, yet there is an undeniable pulse beneath all that smoke, blood and swagger. Geetu Mohandas does not merely build a gangster drama around Yash’s towering presence. She fashions a bruised fable about inheritance, desire, rage, power and the sins that travel quietly from one generation to another. The film falters when it forgets its women and overindulges in its own spectacle, but when it works, it has the feverish magnetism of a nightmare told under golden lights. Toxic is not clean, gentle or perfectly disciplined cinema. It is messy, seductive and morally corroded, and perhaps that is exactly why its grown-up fairy tale leaves behind a bitter, lingering aftertaste.
