Kids riding bikes, childhood spent outdoors with friends and neighbours instead of glued to gadgets, lazy afternoons on rooftops with books, families dining together and children believing they are safe as long as their parents are around — The End of Oak Street is a resounding ode to simpler times and the unconditional love of family. Its world is idyllic, dreamy and deliberately nostalgic.
Inspired by the aesthetic and storytelling style of Steven Spielberg’s Amblin films of the ’80s and ’90s, the film shifts gears swiftly as an ordinary suburban neighbourhood turns into a slaughterhouse. Husband and wife Denise (Anne Hathaway) and Greg (Ewan McGregor) must race against time and a pack of monstrous dinosaurs to protect themselves and their children, Audrey and Brian.
The film has a strange, almost deceptive quality. It refuses to let you take the horror seriously, even as dinosaurs munch on terrified humans and leave no crumbs. In the middle of adrenaline-fuelled chases between predators and prey, you get bizarrely funny moments, including dinosaurs mating. The tone constantly oscillates between terrifying and comical, leaving you unsure whether to laugh or brace yourself. That unusual treatment prevents the film from neatly defining itself. It can be a scary bedtime story unfolding as a family adventure, or a sci-fi survival thriller involving portals and time travel. Either way, it is thoroughly entertaining and pacy, with barely a dull moment. It doesn’t necessarily want you to overthink its logic; it wants you to enjoy the ride. And IMAX makes it even more immersive.
There is a warped sense of fun in watching a family repeatedly have close brushes with death. The horror intensifies relentlessly, but the family remains the film’s true protagonist, not the dinosaurs. Even the ending, which may leave you questioning what you’ve just witnessed, doesn’t feel underwhelming, a refreshing departure from survival thrillers that promise much and fizzle out.
For a change, Anne Hathaway herself must make it home and what a terrific year she is having. Watching her run for her life, grabbing whatever weapon she can find to protect her children from apex predators like T. rexes, is a sight to behold. Ewan McGregor and the young actors hold their own, too.
Blending heartwarming family moments with laugh-out-loud absurdity and genuine scares, The End of Oak Street is an oddly irresistible popcorn survival thriller that doesn’t demand much thought. It is perhaps the most fun you’ll have watching dinosaurs go on a rampage since Jurassic Park (1993). Silly, thrilling and strangely tender, it is the kind of Spielbergian adventure that might just make the master smile.

There is something wonderfully absurd about watching an ordinary suburban street become dinosaur territory. One minute, the Platts are dealing with the usual family mess—marital strain, unhappy teenagers and the quiet frustrations of everyday life. The next, their neighbourhood has been ripped out of suburbia and dropped into a prehistoric world where the biggest problem is no longer a bad day at school but something with very large teeth.
David Robert Mitchell’s The End of Oak Street knows exactly how ridiculous that sounds. Thankfully, it doesn’t try too hard to disguise it. The film follows Denise Platt (Anne Hathaway), her husband Greg (Ewan McGregor), and their children Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery), as their 1980s suburban existence is upended by a mysterious cosmic event. Their neighbourhood is transported somewhere unknown, leaving the family to figure out what happened while trying not to become lunch for the prehistoric creatures now roaming their streets.

The Jurassic Park comparisons are inevitable. Mitchell embraces the Spielbergian DNA, from the 1980s setting and suburban Americana to the family-in-peril structure. But he also brings the eerie sensibility of It Follows to the material, turning familiar spaces—homes, gardens and quiet streets—into places that suddenly feel unsafe.


That contrast is where the film is most effective. The dinosaur sequences are easily its biggest pleasure. Mitchell understands that suspense doesn’t always require showing the monster. A noise outside a window, movement in the distance or something enormous passing through the frame can be more unnerving than another creature charging towards the camera. When the dinosaurs do arrive, the action is inventive, physical and occasionally brutal.The film also benefits from its brisk runtime. At roughly 100 minutes, it doesn’t overstay its welcome, moving between survival, family conflict and increasingly strange encounters without getting bogged down in unnecessary mythology.

Anne Hathaway is particularly good at keeping the human side grounded. Denise could easily have become another generic mother protecting her children from monsters, but Hathaway gives her enough frustration and vulnerability to make her feel like a person before she becomes a survivor. McGregor is quieter as Greg, a father whose already strained relationship with his family becomes impossible to ignore once the world literally falls apart around them.

That idea is promising: an extraordinary crisis forcing an ordinary family to confront problems it has been avoiding. The screenplay, however, doesn’t always give that emotional thread enough room.There is also a slight tension between the film’s influences and its own identity. The suburban setting, bicycles, family dynamics and Spielberg-style sense of adventure are all familiar territory. Mitchell clearly enjoys the language of the old-school blockbuster, but at times the homage becomes more memorable than the story surrounding it.

Still, the film has enough personality to keep things moving. There is something refreshing about an original studio spectacle built around such a gloriously silly premise. It doesn’t arrive burdened by an established franchise or a sprawling cinematic universe. It simply puts a family, a neighbourhood and a bunch of dinosaurs together and lets the chaos unfold.
And when it embraces that simplicity, The End of Oak Street is at its best. The spectacle works. Hathaway keeps the family story afloat. The 1980s setting gives the film an appealing texture, while Mitchell’s horror instincts bring a welcome unease to what could otherwise have been a straightforward creature feature.

It just doesn’t make its people quite as memorable as its monsters.

There are worse ways to spend 99 minutes than watching Anne Hathaway fight dinosaurs in suburbia. The End of Oak Street is fun, occasionally thrilling and strange enough to make the trip worthwhile.

The End of Oak Street opens with pleasant visuals of a suburb, with everyone in the neighbourhood enjoying a fun weekend. This scene unfolds with the feeling that something is waiting to go very, very wrong.

It plays out much like the opening sequence from The Quiet Place Part II, where a perfectly normal neighbourhood is going about its day before something sinister strikes.

In that film, the aliens bring menace. Here, strange creatures, including dinosaurs, resurface, as the entire neighbourhood turns into a prehistoric landscape.

There is no real logic to why it happens or why it happens precisely in this neighbourhood. And the film does not seem terribly bothered by that. There is something nicely old-school about The End of Oak Street and the way the story unfolds with a touch of fantasy adventure. The retro setting only adds to that warm, nostalgic feel.

As the chaos begins, Denise (Anne Hathaway) and her husband Greg (Ewan McGregor) are thrown into it before they can even understand what is happening. The neighbourhood slowly turns into a deadly playground for dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, and it is up to the couple to protect their children Audrey (Maisy Stella) and Brian (Christian Convery) while surviving the danger.

Much like The Quiet Place films, there is a familiar family-bonding theme amid all the chaos. But instead of staying dark and gloomy, Director David Robert Mitchell gives this story an adventurous edge, which makes the whole enterprise far more enjoyable.

Mitchell, who has also scripted the film, uses small spaces in creative ways to create tension as demonstrated in his earlier indie horror It Follows. A suburban house, a backyard, a narrow passage, or even the initial tease of the creatures, Mitchell's horror instincts are visible in the way he builds dread and stages certain attacks. It becomes this fun romp that entertains you, shocks you and, at times, genuinely scares you.

There's also this surprising emotional layer to the story.

Instead of showing Platt as one happy family, we quickly learn that Greg and Denise are going through a rocky phase in their marriage, and the children are also aware their parents are struggling. When the neighbourhood suddenly turns into a danger zone, the family has to find its way back to each other while everything around them is falling apart. This gives the otherwise zany premise a surprisingly effective emotional hook.

The End of Oak Street Is Not Perfect
There is also something humorous about the way the chaos unfolds, and despite its people-in-danger theme, the film embraces the absurdity of it all. The Spielberg influence is obvious, but Mitchell adds enough of his own oddball horror touch to keep it from feeling like a straight Jurassic Park imitation.

But then there are the questions. The ones that leave you a little annoyed, much like those Chris Pratt-starrer Jurassic World films.

You wonder why do some of these characters make such dumb decisions when there are clearly better alternatives? The kids behave exactly like kids in these kinds of survival films always do, and the adults also make some equally questionable choices.

Then comes the wormhole science, which is thrown around without ever making much sense. The ending creates even more logical problems.

But perhaps that is the bargain The End of Oak Street wants you to make. Because for the most part, the film knows exactly what it wants to be and steers confidently within its brisk 90-min runtime.

Thankfully, the performances are enjoyable enough to suck you into this strange fantasy world, and that works well within its perfect adventure-fun framework. Just suspend disbelief, grab some popcorn and enjoy the chaos. The film becomes much more fun that way.

And with Anne Hathaway once again gracing our screens, what is there not to love?
