Sequels are a tricky beast. They arrive with the weight of expectation and the burden of proving that lightning can strike twice. 'Vash Level 2', Krishnadev Yagnik's follow-up to his 2023 Gujarati sleeper hit, doesn’t hold back. It leaps straight into terror, playing with innocence and corruption, honesty and horror, to deliver a film that is raw, unsettling and, at times, chaotic.
Set twelve years after the events of the first film, the story wastes no time in plunging into darkness. A school, usually a sanctuary for friendship, joy and dreams, becomes the stage for a nightmare as a group of 17 and 18-year-old girls fall prey to hypnosis. Their behaviour feels like a disturbing cross between a slasher film and a zombie thriller, at times, even a maniacal and horrifying minion attack. The scenes of schoolgirls leaping in unison from a terrace or attacking strangers on the road are brutal - the kind that almost make you look away, not just for their shock value but for the way they twist innocence into horror.
Where the first 'Vash' drew its power from a single family under unimaginable attack, creating a claustrophobic setting that made every scare personal, 'Vash Level 2' stretches its canvas. More characters, more moving parts, more spectacle, and more horror. The result is ambitious, but precision is traded for volume and chaos at times. What was once terrifying in its restrained setting inside a house becomes louder, messier and harder to contain.

Janki Bodiwala, who recently won a National Award for her performance in the original ('Vash' also won the Best Gujarati Film honours), takes a backseat here. For much of the film, she lies in a vegetative state, her frozen smile more unnerving than any scream. It is spooky in its stillness, and she has just one standout scene when she momentarily breaks free of the spell. Her limited role is surprising given how central she was to the first film, but it works by adding a quiet chill to the proceedings.
The baton is instead carried by Hitu Kanodia, as the anguished father Atharv, who emerges as an unlikely hero caught in a cycle of vengeance and possession. He plays it with conviction, giving the film a centre of gravity amid the frenzy. Hiten Kumar, with his seasoned gravitas, adds further weight as the 'uncle' with devious plans. Together, they keep the story grounded even as the screenplay leans heavily on shock and spectacle. Monal Gajjar, as the school principal, is also reduced to just a helpless authority, shocked at the horrors unfolding around her.

The film briefly gestures towards misogyny through dialogue but never digs into it convincingly. The focus remains on effective shocks, nightmarish visuals, and mass hypnosis, which Yagnik stages with flair in the first half. But the second half begins to falter. The narrative loses breath, familiar tropes creep in, and the climax feels absolutely hurried. The twist is so simple that it borders on being amusing, a jarring contrast to the raw horror that precedes it.
It’s also worth recalling that the original 'Vash' was remade in Hindi as 'Shaitaan'. While the latter had the stars and gloss, it lacked the raw honesty and brutality that Yagnik brought to his film. 'Vash Level 2' embraces those emotions again. Even though it becomes messy and uneven at times, it never feels dishonest. It doesn’t wait for suspense to simmer; it throws you into chaos from the very first scene and dares you to look away.

Bigger, louder and more chaotic than its predecessor, 'Vash Level 2' is not flawless, but it leaves its mark. It begins as a raging horror storm and ends on a softer note, unsettling enough to linger even after the credits roll.
